Writing A Film Review What is a review?
- Gives information - Expresses opinion - Gives reasons for opinion - Provides an overall summary - Focuses on key details - Uses technical language - Uses persuasive techniques
Choose a film to review. You could choose your favourite film, a film you have seen recently, or a new film you’re wanting to watch. Have a look at the spider diagram below. Think about each of the headings, so you know what to be looking out for when you’re watching the film.
Task 1 – Watch the Film. You may want to take notes as you watch.

Task 2 Plan your review. Using the headings on the spider diagram, bullet point information for each section. You don’t need to do this as a spider diagram – you may use a simple box plan.

Task 3 Now write up your review following this structure:
1) Explain what the film is about. - Don’t go into too much detail. - Don’t give away the ending. - What genre does it belong to? (horror, romance, action, etc) 2) Write about the actors. - Who are they? What else have they been in? - Are they believable? Do they do a good job? 3) Write about the good points of the film. 4) Write about the bad points of the film. 5) Write about your favourite part of the film. 6) Give your overall opinion of the whole film. 7) Finish with a star rating. Can you include a quote in your review?
- This could be a quote from one of the characters in the film. - It could be quote about the film, from somebody you have
asked about the film. - You could use the internet to research quotes which have been
published about the film. - Or make one up.
It is up to you how you set your review out. You could simply write the review up. Write it in the form of a magazine/newspaper article. You can use the computer to produce your review. There are some ideas for the layout below.
Task 4
Produce a poster to advertise the film. Your aim is to persuade people to watch the film.

Task 5 -Comic strip.
Take your favourite part/scene from the film and turn it into a comic strip. You may want to do more than one! You can use the template below or make your own.
