Everyone will see the creative side of our new employee, Shannon Rutt, as she is putting together your “Rockin’ Seniors” newsletter. She wasn’t looking for a job when the ad for this kept coming up on Facebook. Shannon’s been home raising her three children, but with the older two now grown and out-of-state, she was thinking that it was time to go back to work. It was when she was being interviewed for Volunteer of the Month that she decided this was where she wanted to be. She’s been a volunteer Meals on Wheels driver here, has volunteered other places, helps with her husband’s business, and has run her own “bead bus” business all while “not working.” In other words, she’s creative and fits right into our fast paced Center. Shannon will bring a wealth of knowledge to planning activities, as she’s a Denver native; she’s certainly seen things that most of us “transplants” haven’t heard of yet. Her husband owns the chain of Elvis Cinemas in the metro area, and they have 3 dogs and a “13 going on 30” daughter still at home. Shannon has a dream to one day be a first responder. Stop by and welcome Shannon. Her hours are Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM-2:00 PM.

Rockin’ Activity Sign-Up Sheet 19

~ Debbi

¨ We will be closed on January 1 for New Year’s Day and on Monday, January 15 in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Please mark your calendars.

¨ NEW POLICY - which goes into effect with January activities sign up on December 29th. We will no longer offer a special price for anyone who wants to drive themselves to an event, rather than riding on our transportation. This is for a few reasons: 1) we are an activity center with a fleet of vehicles and want to encour-age everyone to get to know their fellow members while utilizing our transportation; 2) with our increasing attendance, we are often limited to a maximum number by the venue, and we plan that number based on bus capacity; and 3) there are still adminis-trative costs associated with anyone who does drive themselves. We will still allow people to drive themselves to certain events because we realize the convenience to where some people live, etc. However it will not be an option for all trips anymore, and there will be no price difference. It will be noted on page 12-13 in the newsletter if a trip is not open to those who drive themselves. If you are taking advantage of this, please note it on your Sign-Up Sheet. Thank you for your understanding.

Happy 2018 to all my family here at the Senior Center. My wish for each of you

in the new year is that all of 2018 is filled with happiness, good health, and that you feel loved by family and friends. When the storms of life hit, as we all know

they do, please realize that we will continue to work diligently to make YOUR

Senior Center a place to come where people care and where there are activities

to take your mind off your troubles.

As you make your resolutions and goals for the new year, I hope that becoming

more involved here at YOUR Center is one of them. Maybe you’ll resolve to:

get out more and go on trips; learn something new at one of our Discovery

Hour programs; become more active by attending Sit and Be Fit; develop a skill

like drawing at SeniorzArt; give back by volunteering as a driver; or just hang

out drinking coffee. We welcome you all!

Throughout this newsletter you’ll be reading about the fantastically successful

results of our biggest event, the Craft Show Extraordinaire. Once again,

because of all of you and the literal “hordes” of people who came, we exceeded

all past records of the show. I want each of you to be as proud as I am of this incredible undertaking which brings not only funding, but so much more to our

Center. Thank you to everyone involved.

Happy New Year!

Craft Show Recap - 2017 The 25th Annual Craft Show is now history. This milestone year, a quarter a century of growth, was record-setting, with 6,000+ people coming to the

show. Traffic was backed up for blocks. We’ve never experienced anything like it. Those 6,000 brought in 808 pounds of food to donate to the Douglas-Elbert Task Force, double last year. With reported sales from the vendors, along with the sales from the areas that we ran, more than

$100,000 was spent by those 6,000 people. Amazing!! Plus, 172 volunteers have put in more than 2000 hours to make this Craft Show Extraordinaire the success that it was. You were all fabulous!!

Below are income figures; everything up from previous years: Booth Fees: $15,985 Silent Auction: $7,312 Book Sale: $1,318 Grandma’s Attic: $2,690

Grandma’s Kitchen: $3,182 Craft Sales at event: $4,318 Gift Card Tree $630 Balloon Tips: $251

Wreath Auction $1,507 Raffles: $1,482 Pre & Post Craft Sales: $2,938 (as of 11/27) After deducting expenses, including cost of facilities, equipment rentals, advertising, permits and supplies, we netted more than $30,000.

Please realize that this is still increasing as sales continue in the Holiday Boutique at the Center.

Special thanks to the following individuals who headed up the various areas:

You have chosen a great place to get involved, and we are glad to welcome you.

~ The Staff

The transformation of a little event to put up some tables to sell some of the crafts made by Senior Center members 25 years ago to this biggest craft event in the area is owed completely to the members and volunteers of this organization. We have tremendous gratitude to those who grew it over the years, giving us quite a legacy for our 25th anniversary. We wish we could personally thank everyone involved through the decades.

There aren’t enough words of praise for the dedication, creativity, passion and all around goodness of the hundreds of people who made this year’s show the biggest and best yet. We honor each of you: volunteers who gave tirelessly on a very exhausting few days setting up and running the show in so many areas including our booths, driving buses, assisting vendors, loading and unloading our trucks, just jumping in where they saw a need, and much more; volunteers who baked enough goodies for “Grandma’s Kitchen” that more than $3,000 was raised (a +$3,000 bake sale might be a Guinness Book record); volunteers whose talents were put to use all year long making a variety of items that we sold at our craft booth; volunteers who were in the community seeking donations or promoting the event in the months leading up to the show; and the many volunteers who made our job so much easier in so many ways. THANK YOU EVERYONE!

The Douglas County Lions Club participates in the international

Lions Club program which provides glasses for people in third world

countries. There is a box for your donations at the Senior Center, so

just drop them in. The glasses are cleaned, sorted and prescriptions

read by prisoners in the judicial system, and then sent overseas to

provide such joy to others.

Representatives from human services are here one day a month to help members see if they qualify for a

variety of services. Feel free to stop by to talk to them, no appointment needed, as you may be eligible.

*Matter of Balance Class Returns* Due to a delay in funding, Tri-County Health will not be

offering the “Matter of Balance” class until April & May of this year. Be sure to mark your calendars.

Sign up at the front desk in March.

Brain health - or healthy cognitive functioning – is generally described to include the following components: •language • thought • memory • executive function (the ability to plan and carry out tasks) • judgment • attention

perception • remembered skills (such as driving) • ability to live a purposeful life. These are often not items that change dramatically from one day to the next, but over time can decline. Currently there is much research going on to see what we can do to positively affect these changes. We already know that physical activity can affect our vascular system positively,

in addition to helping your short term memory from declining. We already know that being socially involved can affect many of the above components by keeping us interested in life and others. Eating healthy foods affects everything from the effect of antioxidants on a cellular level to regulating carbohydrate intake to maintain a more even or constant blood sugar

level which helps with brain health as it is the largest consumer of glucose in our bodies. Challenging our brains in everything from learning a new game or skill, or practicing those that are challenging to us like Sudoku or crossword

puzzles or jig saw puzzles (I have no patience for them!), to changing the order that you routinely do an activity can help in your brain functioning at a higher level. While some of these things may not prevent diseases related to brain functioning, they do “make” your brain function more fully to delay or slow down the progression of some conditions. With 2018 – a new year - now here, I challenge each of you to do one thing every day out of your normal routine that could help your

brain health! Happy New Year!

WEATHER CLOSURE INFORMATION

We occasionally close the Center to keep everyone

safe and off icy and snowy roads, not always

following the school closures.

Sometimes we may delay our opening.

There are 4 ways to check to see whether we are closed or opening late: 1) Call the Center and listen to the

message - if there is no special message, we are open; 2) Watch 9NEWS, CBS4 and Fox 31. Our information will be scrolled across the bottom of the screen; 3) Check the homepage on our website as we will post it . You must

actually go into the website, not just look below the map if you Google it; 4) Like us on Facebook and you will

receive notices. We try to have these announcements in place by 7:00 AM, although please understand that

occasionally we have technology issues. Also, in the event of a delayed opening, please check our phone

message before coming to the Center, just in case we have to close. Thank you for understanding as we make

decisions regarding your safety.

AARP provides free tax preparation on

Mondays and Wednesdays from Feb. 5-April

11 in the mobile unit behind the Center.

Appointments will be made from 9:00 AM

through 2:30 PM. We should have the

schedules before mid-January and you can

then begin making your appointments at the

front desk. Spots fill quickly. NOTE: AARP

will be doing the taxes on a new computer

system, so they will NOT have access to old

records, even if they had done them here.

Debbi Haynie: “Call me crazy, but this is one of my favorite days (other than hosting a Mystery Trip)! This was my eighth show, and each year I have so much fun with all the volunteers, crafters and attendees. This fundraiser is so important to our operating budget and it thrills me that we have fun doing it, too. I admit that I get the best sleep ever when it’s over!”

Deb Santy: “I wish you all could witness what I do - an empty exhibit hall on Thursday that fills to the absolute brim with things to sell and people to buy, then empties out again by Saturday night. It’s the most amazing feeling to realize that we make it happen and thousands of people absolutely love that we do what we do. It’s an honor to be involved.”

Juli Asbridge: “When I first saw the wall of empty volunteer opportunities hanging in the Center, I was overcome with panic. As always, our volunteers rose above and beyond the needs and made the event run smoothly. You all are amazing!”

Tina Whitby: “The Craft Show Extraordinaire is much more than a show. It is a wonderfully choreographed experience for every-one involved. It’s gratifying to hear that it is an enriching and joyful experience for vendors, volunteers, shoppers, and staff alike.”

Mary Jo Fry: “It was an amazing day for me at the Craft Show Extraordinaire. It wouldn’t be possible without the amazing volunteers, vendors, and support of the community.”

Shannon Rutt: “I thoroughly loved working with the ladies at the Craft Booth, and I felt like we all had a lot in common. You can tell they love what they do and take pride in their work. It’s amazing how many hours of love and hard work went into their projects. I love to see all the creativity - it inspires me.”

Susan Santamaria-Fenton: “I can’t believe the sheer enormity of what comes into the show from our people, our seniors. I couldn’t believe the amount of baked goods that people delivered, and then was overwhelmed at the talented hands that made all the items sold at the Craft Booth. Everyone just plain loves this show.”

January Birthdays

Each November the Board of Directors holds an Annual Meeting, our own version of the “State of the Union.” Presided by President Doris Rollins, each board member gave a recap of what went on this year in his or her individual areas of responsibility. From new vehicle purchases to membership milestones, it was a very exciting past year. Director Debbi Haynie, gave a visual presentation of the past year at the Center, and Doris projected some of the Board’s upcoming plans and goals. The 2018 budget was presented and approved, and the election of new officers was completed by acclimation. A lunch buffet followed the meeting for all who attended.

Congratulations to Doris Rollins
