Don’t assume you know what’s below. Protect yourself and those around you – Call 811 every time.

5th and 6th Graders Visit WRCTCe Bison 5th grade and 6th grade classes visited WRCTC to learn about the telecommunications industry. Trevor Fisher, Lead Central Oce Technician, and Eric Kahler, Journeyman Combination Technician, gave the students a tour of the central oce and explained how the telephone and Internet services travel from the central oce to each of their homes. e students were given an in-depth look into the recently installed new switch and how it works compared to the old switch. Trevor and Eric showed them what ber optic cable looks like and explained how the ber optic strands carry voice and data as fast as light (186,000 miles per second!)

throughout our network and to the rest of the world without a time delay. e technicians explained how important it is to call 811 before you dig since the ber optic cable is very expensive to repair. ey also discussed what kind of schooling is required to become a telecommunications technician. To conclude the tour, the students were shown a map of our service territory.

4th Graders receive South Dakota BooksDid you know Faulkton, SD is known as the “Carousel City?” Or that Clark, SD celebrates Potato Days every summer with several “spudsy” events including

mashed potato wrestling? e 4th graders in Bison, Bualo, Lemmon and Newell just learned these fun facts. WRCTC recently

provided a copy of the book entitled My South Dakota Book - Hometown Snapshots to each 4th grade student to take home. e book simulates a fun, photographic road trip of 33 South Dakota 374-4271 towns and their interesting landmarks.

The book was published by SDN Communications out of Sioux Falls, SD of which WRCTC is a member. The project grew from a request 375-3782 by SDN’s member companies. We hope this book will provide the students with the cultural and historical value of the small communities within this wonderful state and all the attractions they have to offer.
