Wrapping it upPLEASE know that there were DOZENS of “New Deal” programs created by FDR to help combat the Depression. There was the: CCC, CWA, FERA, PWA, NIRA, TVA, Indian Reorganization Act, SEC, HOLC, FSA, Fair Standards Labor Act . . . the list goes on and on.

There was even a SECOND New Deal where even MORE programs were created! Phew! Good thing I’m not making you know ALL of them, right?

The point is – regardless of the NAME of the program, or the crazy acronym that goes with it (known to us fancy history teachers as alphabet soup) – FDR wanted three things for America:

Relief Recovery Reform

Criticisms of the New Deal1. Gives too much power to the Government, which

taxes Americans in order to fund programs (like Social Security)

2. More money was spent than collected in taxes –hoping that future gains would balance the budget

3. It didn’t end the Great Depression.

But what did?

What really ended the Great Depression?

• World War II began when Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japanese on December 7, 1941 – “a date that will live in infamy.”

• Employment in the United States went to 100% virtually overnight, as fifteen (15) million men joined the armed forces and factories began producing metal works, weapons, and supplies.

• Prosperity would continue after the war, as the United States emerged as a military and economic superpower.

Accomplishments of the New Deal1. Employed millions of people through public work

programs (like the PWA) – RELIEF

2. Created programs for the poor and disadvantaged (like Social Security) - RELIEF

3. Increased role of the federal government in economic affairs (like the FDIC ) - RECOVERY

4. Government is needed to regulate business practices (like the REA) – REFORM
