    1 Overview

In general, WCDMA system is consisting of Core Network (CN), UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) and User Equipment (UE). UTRAN has two network elements:Node B and RNC. Iub is defined as the interface between RNC and Node B. Fig 1shows the position of RNC in WCDMA system.

Figure 1 RNC in WCDMA system

RNC connects other equipments via the following interfaces:

      Iub interface to Node B

      Iu-CS interface to MSC/MSC Server

      Iu-PS interface to SGSN

      Iur interface to other RNC

The main functionalities of RNC include:

System information broadcast and UE access control

Mobility management, such as handover etc.

Radio Resource Management such as power control, cell resource allocation etc.

Encryption and decryption for signaling and data

ZTE RNC product, named ZXWR RNC (hereinafter refer to “RNC”), is based on 3GPPFDD R7, being compatible with other network elements and UE based on

R99/R4/R5/R6/R7. At the same time, ZXWR RNC provides series standard interfacesincluding Iu, Iub, Iur etc, supporting to connect with other venders ‟ equipments such asCN, RNC etc.

    2 Highlight Features

The ZXWR products always aim at saving customer‟s investment in 3G products byoffering a large capacity and linear expandable system once and for all. This facilitateshigh density 3G services. The RNC adopts distributing design, separates control planefrom user plane, interface from application, supports ATM protocol stack, it also supportsall IP UTRAN. The RNC system has the following features:

2.1 Large Capacity and High Expandability

The RNC is designed to adapt service increment and various traffic environments. Itprovides a large capacity and is easy to be expanded. The data throughput is up to 9.6Gbps and maximum traffic is 76800Erl. The control plane and the user plane of the RNCare in distributed mode so there is no bottleneck for centralized processing in the entiresystem. The processing resources of control plane and user plane are linear expandableaccording to the capacity increment requirement.

2.2 IP Architecture Design, High Efficiency

Base on the all IP switching platform, data transmission is high efficient and flexible. Thehigh performance packet data management platform ensures the system non-blockingdata transaction capability. Comparing with ATM-based platform, it features convenientmaintenance and configuration, flexible expandability, higher transmission efficiency, and agile transmission mechanism, which can meets the future requirements ofincreasing mobile data services.

    2.3 High reliability

The RNC has high reliability and stability. The system is based on redundancy design. So there is no single point of failure. The system supports online software download andthere is no need to reboot after version upgrade.

    2.4 Outstanding radio resource management

ZTE owns dozens of patents on radio resource management of the RNC. It supportsautomatic optimization of radio parameters and can intelligently allocate and scheduleradio resource priorities according to network load situation and QoS level.

    4 Reliability Design

    4.1 Hardware Redundancy Design

In order to ensure reliability, RNC rack and shelves adopt dual-power-supply, and theconnection cables in RNC rack are at least dual-mode. At the same time, RNC provides1+1 backup for the key boards such as: ROMB, CLKG, RCB, UIMC, GIMU, CHUB, PSN,GLI, and RUB adopts load-sharing method, which is named redundancy resource pool.

And each of the interface boards adopt 1+1 backup or load-sharing. The entire systemperformance will not be affected if individual board has fault.

    4.2 Software Reliability Design

RNC software subsystem adopts high reliability design. Besides the external operationand maintenance ports, which are protected by internal firewall software, RNC internalcommunication in whole system is entirely isolated. So RNC can detect and defendagainst the network security attacks. At the same time, the OMM subsystem supportspowerful user authentication functionality; the idea is that system will distribute relevantoperation permission according to user name and password.

RNC software system has powerful self-fault-tolerant capability, mainly reflected in:

Automatically checking the legitimacy of data configured by user, refusing wrong or

unreasonable data configuration and informing user to modify

Supporting key version and data backup, and performing rollback when version or

    data loading failed

Supporting “watch dog”  functionality, resetting the boards when software going

wrong and recording the failure information by black box function

Detecting the failure of ports, link and SW/HW, resetting/triggering backup unit to

    guarantee system running normally
