    Because the essay section is timed, and it should be based on what you remember and

    have learned in this class, I cant give you the actual essays ahead of time. However, theinstructions will be to write two essays, each approximately 1 to 1 pages on each of the

    following two questions. Your essay should be well written and include all citations. Be

    sure that each essay has a strong thesis statement (argument). (35 points each)

    In general, without giving you the actual essay question, you should be able to write oneessay that looks at countries that have had difficulty transitioning to a democratic model

    that values human rights.

    You should also be able to look at the effect of the Cold War on other countries besides

    the U.S. and the Soviet Union.

    There will also be 4-5 short answer questions that you should be able to write a few

    sentences explaining. For example you should be able to discuss briefly the Korean War,

    the Suez Crisis, the 1953 coup in Iran, Key leaders (i.e., Mao, Deng) in China.
