WP 3 Community Participation- Meeting 1
SUMMARY
1. Presentation of FUNITEC – School of Architecture La Salle, in particular of
the activities which can be related to the project. 2. Proposals for community participatory actions you could organize in your
own settings, and with which partners you could collaborate to carry them out.
3. Description of your capacities/resources to collaborate in the production of the deliverables of WP3: 1. Participatory action 2. Video reportint 3. Report on participatory actions
1- PARTICIPATORY PROCESSES
1- Previous experiences on participatory processes
- BARCODE HOUSING SYSTEM (2005-09) - Participation of dwellers in the configuration of their housing units (layout, materials)
- OIKODOMOS (2012): Plus Ultra Neighbourhood - Participatory analysis of urban environments: building sense of identity, collaboration
between neighbours and students
- OIKONET (2013/14): El Born Project, with Sostre Cívic - Designing communication tools and participatory methods in a co-housing project

1 -PARTICIPATORY PROCESSES BARCODE HOUSING SYSTEM
BARCODE HOUSING SYSTEM is composed of interwoven working spaces: - PROJECT DEVELOPMENT. - HOUSING UNIT LAYOUTS. - HOUSING UNIT CONFIGURATION. Occupants describe their housing program - HOUSING UNITS ASSEMBLY. - HOUSING UNITS SPECIFICATIONS. - BUILDING INFORMATION MODEL.

Two strategies were proposed:
• Image Elicitation, through interactions with BCHS design interfaces.
• Conceptual Maps, through interactions with BCHS design interfaces.

PLUS ULTRA NEIGBOURHOOD
We found that residents of Barcelona's Plus Ultra district had long been discussing,
with the local authorities, the future of their neighbourhood, being an area with a
distinctive character and history which had become isolated after being
surrounded by new developments.
This was an appropriate scenario for students to get involved with the community
in finding solutions to socially conflictive problems dealing with the living
environment.
It was also an opportunity to create learning scenarios which went beyond the
limits of the academia, both in the formulation of the problem and in the
implementation of the learning activities which took place not only in the
classroom but also in the premises (both physical and virtual) of the neighbour’
associations.
OIKODOMOS Virtual Campus
Two strategies to apply in the participatory space of the Plus Ultra project were
proposed:
•Observation of the behavioural patterns of the people in the neighbourhood.
• Dialogue with the residents through meetings, interviews and surveys.
PARTICIPATORY STRATEGIES
WP 3 Community Participation- Meeting 1
1- PARTICIPATORY PROCESSES PLUS ULTRA NEIGHBOURHOOD
• Students and citizens engaged themselves in a common study on the value and
significance of dwelling in our contemporary societies.
• Students –guided by their tutors– helped neighbours to externalize and
communicate their views, perceptions, and experiences about their dwellings and their
lives in the neighborhood.
• In this situated learning context, students play the role of mediators between the
neighbors and the city administrators by creating the conditions that favored dialogue
between them.
LEARNING SCENARIO
WP 3 Community Participation- Meeting 1
1- PARTICIPATORY PROCESSES PLUS ULTRA NEIGHBOURHOOD
A series of learning activities which involve both students and citizens were
designed specifically with the following purposes:
• To collect first hand information from the inhabitants regarding the
perceptions and experiences of their living environment
• To provide neighbors with the appropriate methods and tools to express
and communicate their perceptions of their living environment
• To promote citizens’ participation in the urban planning process

1- PARTICIPATORY PROCESSES PLUS ULTRA NEIGHBOURHOOD
•Approaching people: interviews, recorded conversations with neighbors.
•Identifying places: finding out where neighbours carried out their daily
activities in public space.
•Collecting stories: collecting memories and experiences
•Representing a dwelling: neighbours were asked to describe verbally and
graphically their domestic space.

1- PARTICIPATORY PROCESSES PLUS ULTRA NEIGHBOURHOOD
A participatory process in environmental analysis has become a learning experience
for all of those involved:
•Citizens learned about their environment through the processes designed and
implemented by students and teachers
• Students acquired a direct knowledge of the place –in all its dimensions, urban,
social and cultural– while they developed their skills as mediators and facilitators
• Teachers acted as learning designers, creating a blended learning space which
integrates the academic activities with the living environment, physical and
digital learning spaces

Activity 3: PLAN your future home– Part 1 You will first describe what activities make you feel at home. Then you will choose eight activities to place them in the diagram. The, you assign value to them, identify relations between them and describe them. Finally, you will locate the activities in space (inside, outside, in-between).

Activity 3: PLAN your future home– Part 2 First, you will choose some of the activities which are most relevant to you. Then, we will break-down the activity in actions taking place at different times and places. The actions will organized in space according to the importance you assign to them. Clusters of actions will be related.
