Sondheim’s brooding mu-sical thriller is filled with hu-mour, wit and scary delights. It also boasts a magnificent score. From its first UK per-formance in London in 1980 to the stunning 2007 screen adaptation by Tim Burton, this tale of obsession and vengeance has enraptured audiences.

Set in Victorian London, the musical depicts Sweeney

TUES 2 – SAT 13 JULYWest End and Broadway’s hit musical comedy HAIRSPRAY visits the Theatre Royal Nottingham from 2-13 July.

The cast is lead by stage and screen star Mark Benton as larger than life Edna Turnblad, EastEnders’ Lucy Benjamin as scheming TV executive Velma Von Tussle and X Factor finalist Marcus Collins as too cool for school Seaweed Stubbs. They are joined by newcomer Freya Sutton as big-hearted, big-haired teen heroine Tracy Turnblad and original West End cast member Sandra Marvin, as Motormouth Maybelle.

It’s 1962, the 50s are out and change is in the air. Baltimore’s Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion – dancing. She wins a spot on the local TV

Hairspray

dance programme, The Corny Collins Show and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. But can a trendsetting hair-hopper like Tracy get her massively shy Mom out of the apartment, beat evil Amber to be crowned Miss Hairspray, integrate Corny’s show for good AND win the heart of local heartthrob Link Larkin, all without denting her super high ‘do’? If anyone can, Tracy can!

TUES 6 AUG - SUN 1 SEPTCole Porter’s musical comedy has enchanted audiences for nearly 80 years and now comes to Kilworth House Theatre from August 6.

Winner of three Tony Awards in 2011 including Best Revival of a Musical, ‘Anything Goes’, is about the lovers, liars and pranksters on a transatlantic cruise.

Etiquette and convention head out the portholes as two unlikely pairs set off on the course to true love. Sailing from New York to England, the S.S. American carries a rather unusual group of passengers - American debutante Hope Harcourt accompanied by her fiancé wealthy Englishman Lord Evelyn Oakleigh and her mother Evangeline; nightclub

singer Reno Sweeney; Wall Street banker Elisha Witney and his stowaway assistant Billy Crocker and gangster Moonface Martin to name but a few! It turns out that Hope is Billy’s long-lost love and engaging the help of those on-board he pursues the girl of his dreams.

Peppering this hilariously bumpy journey to true love are some of musical theatre’s most memorable standards, including I Get a Kick out of You, It’s De-Lovely, You’re the Top, Friendship and of course, Anything Goes.

ANYTHING GOES is at Kilworth House Theatre from August 6 to Sept 1. Tickets available from the Box office 01858 881939 and online at www.kilworthhousetheatre.co.uk

During their quest, the two fugitives encounter witches, armoured polar bears, soul-eating spectres and rebellious angels, in a journey which they hope will take them to The Republic of Heaven.

His Dark Materials

SATURDAY 4 AUGUSTWith interest in The Rolling Stones currently at fever pitch following the announcement of their much anticipated sell out shows at Glastonbury Festival and Hyde Park, former Stone Bill Wyman is set to visit Market Harborough with his own all star band The Rhythm Kings.

with his own band The Rhythm Kings this summer. These include Glastonbury, The Colne International Blues Festival and Market Harborough’s Jazz & Blues review on August 24th.

FRIDAY 19 JULYGet set to experience Mawkin, one of brit-folks brightest new guns, when they perform live as part of The Castle’s Red Room series on Fri 19 July, 8pm. This blistering 5-piece band fuse folk, world, jazz, prog and rock; blend-ing the cutting edge of the con-temporary music scene while still reigning all the verve and mystique of ancient folk music traditions from across the globe.

Fresh off the back of the three-times-BBC-Folk-Award nominated collaboration Mawkin:Causley, folk rebels Mawkin are now forging a bold new sound that strengthens their instrumental roots and em-braces a new, exuberant explora-tion into the traditional folk canon from the British isles and beyond.

The “unconditionally mighty” (Mojo) four-piece have augment-

Mawkin

ed their sound with the addition of long-time producer Lee Rich-ardson on drums and percus-sion. It’ll also be the first time that Mawkin will be interpreting traditional songs with singing du-ties shared between the band; a brave new direction indeed!

Expect the mesmerising gui-tar playing of David Delarre, the carnal beats of drummer and percussionist Lee Richardson; underpinning richly textured bass lines from Danny Crump. Add a

host of wild and emotive melodies from the frenetic fiddling fingers of James Delarre inter-playing with the virtuosic bellowing of Nick Cooke’s melodeon and you have Mawkin.

SATURDAY 10 AUGUSTThe 6th annual Althorp Park Battle Proms Concert will take place on Saturday 10 August 2013 and will include all of the favourite highlights such as a full orchestral programme, Spitfire display, breathtaking fireworks, Napoleonic cavalry, 200 live cannons, picnic in the park atmosphere and a sing-along ‘Last Night of the Proms’ finale.

SAT 20 JULY - SUN 22 SEPTWith the recent discovery of the bones of King Richard III, Leices-tershire’s famous Wistow Maze has a timely and appropriate his-torical theme for 2013. You first shot to fame when you won the Channel 4 series Musicality, which showcased your singing, dancing and acting – but which of those skills was your first love?

Singing was my first love; My Gran taught me to play the piano at an early age. I would spend hours making up tunes instead of practicing my scales (which I regret now). As I got older I started to sing whilst playing and my Dad would ‘gently’ call from the lounge “Don’t call us we’ll call you”. To be fair, I did have quite a loud voice.

Did you have much stage experience before your win thrust you into the limelight, starring in Chicago in the West End?

I learnt ballroom dancing from the age of 8-12 and entered a few competitions here and there. When I was very young, at Christmas, my Mum would arrange a little Christmas show for my brothers and cousins to perform to the family. That’s when the seed must have been planted… even though I was pretty useless to start: Coming on at the wrong time or not at all in some cases. In my teen years I wanted to be a professional Athlete, Tennis Player, Footballer, Basket Ball Player - depending what sport was on the TV at the time. Sport was my life and to be honest, I

Star of Channel 4’s Musicality, Matthew Goodgame will play the lead role in Anything Goes at Kilworth House Theatre. Here he talks to WOW’s Derek Hammond.

didn’t even know what Musical Theatre was until about the age of 19: When I auditioned with a friend for West Side Story and ended up playing the role of Bernardo. Two weeks at The Winter Gardens in Margate and that was it; I loved it. I started taking the odd dance class and singing lesson. I performed in a few local Dance Showcases and played the role of David Copperfield at the local pavilion; but that was it. My time was taken up being a Primary School Teacher at St Saviours in Westgate-on-sea. It was only when I was handed the flyer for Musicality that my life changed.

You’ve since reprised the role of Billy Flynn on visits to both Singapore and

Las Vegas. What’s the most glamorous and exciting show

you’ve worked on to date?

Although I have performed in a number of shows over the years –

Musicality must still be the most Glamorous

Show that I have been a part of. The TV coverage to 4.5 million viewers; recording an album at Abbey Road and

Air Studios with a 65 piece orchestra; performing to an exhilarating audience filled with fans, critics, industry professionals and more importantly nearly my entire family. My first entrance as Billy Flynn, with beautiful ladies calling my name in fish nets and suspenders and the roar of the audience before I even

opened my mouth to say “Is everybody here? Is everybody ready!” will live with me forever. I still have close ties with Chicago as I often perform for their Cellophane Company which I recently returned from Mumbai with. Chicago will always feel like my home on the stage.

You’ve recently performed in the musical version of the Thorn Birds, She Loves Me and Grease in the West End; but what’s your favourite of all the stage roles you’ve played and sung?

My favourite role… well apart from Billy Flynn in Chicago which holds a unique place for me - has to be Danny Zuko in Grease. Probably the coolest character to grace the stage and they asked me to play it! The T-Bird Leather Jacket and the strut, whilst singing some of the most famous songs of all time was a pleasure every evening: Even when suffering from a heart problem, cracked rib and viral meningitis I fought to get back on stage to play the part as quick as possible.

ANYTHING GOESKilworth House TheatreTue 06 August to Sun 01 Septemberwww.kilworthhousetheatre.co.uk

Why is this your favourite role? Is the character like you in certain ways?

Is the character of Danny Zuko like me in anyway? You would have to ask my friends… and I think their answer would be “No, but he wishes”.

Looking back over your illustrious past record of productions, it strikes us that you must hardly have any time to spend at home. Do you enjoy the actor’s life, forever out on the road?

I love the creativity of every role, the challenge of trying to perfect each part whether it be physically, vocally or both and the anticipation of the audiences’ reaction to the show. Travelling has been a part of my family since the age of 4 and half - when I lived on a 36 foot wooden boat called ‘Casa Del Mar’ with my family and sailed the Mediterranean Sea for 3 and half years; then later returning home one day from school at the age of 12 and being told that “we are going on another adventure” – this time cycling from my home town of Broadstairs all the way to Egypt - over a 4 and half month period. Performing gives me the opportunity to satisfy my itchy feet! To say it is easy to be away from family and loved ones is a different question and has a simple answer - It is the hardest thing. You question your job sometimes but have to remind yourself it comes with the territory and not many people in the world get to do a job that they love and get to see the world while doing it. Since professionally starting performing: I have lived in the Caribbean for 4 months on a cruise ship; ported out of Venice each week and sailed the Mediterranean Sea for 3 months; travelled to Las Vegas, Singapore, Mubai, Dubai, Germany and toured China for a month with the 12 Tenors - so I cannot complain.

You’ve recently expanded into management, taking on the career of the wonderfully glam 40s-style girl group, the Spinettes. Tell us a bit about them, and how your involvement came about?

The Spinettes are a 1940s-1960s trio of West End and International Performers who dazzle every audience with show stopping harmonies, sleek moves and personalities in abundance… you can tell I ’ve written that a few times: Even though I am bias - every word is true.

I created The Spinettes with my girlfriend Melanie Cripps 3 Years ago. Melanie was performing in Oklahoma at the time (Chichester) and one evening the cast put on a cabaret. Melanie was a part of a trio of girls who stole the show. My (undiscovered) business mind instantly saw an opportunity. When you are a performer

of any professional standard you will have highs, lows

and times when you are out of work. All Actors will tell you that sometimes you have to do whatever you can do to make enough

money for the rent or mortgage – so why not

do something that you are great at, enjoy and will keep developing your

craft. I had already started creating my own group called The Swing Tenors with some friends; which is a corporate group that get hired for weddings, private functions and events.

What started as a small project has developed into a group that many people are talking about in all walks of life. From the humble beginnings of rehearsals in our lounge and my dressing room at the Piccadilly Theatre to performing at 10 and 11 Downing Street, a Sponsorship deal with Mercedes-Benz Rossetts and Vivien of Holloway, Guest Artists upon Holland America Cruise Lines from Hong Kong to Singapore and an on-going discussion with a record label – you could say it takes up a lot of my time. But every second is always a pleasure as The Spinettes are truly wonderful and of the 13 girls that make up the group each one is unique. The Spinettes are a family of their own now.

And now for Anything Goes at

Kilworth House Theatre. A classic Cole Porter musical with some all-time favourite showtunes...

The Magnificently beautiful Kilworth House combined with the classic that is Anything Goes with the music of one of the greats - Cole Porter… leaves me filled with great expectations, bubbling excitement and some might say trembling knees. So I cannot wait to start rehearsals and meet the other cast. A mountain we must climb but get ready for the view!

Do gangsters, lords, bankers and nightclub singers figure in your own experience of cruise ships?

Gangsters – maybe, Lords – probably, Bankers-definitely and Nightclub Singers… well that would be telling!

What would you do if you were invisible for a day?

As I am an English Gentlemen… I will refrain from answering that one.

With summer here, as I’m writing this it is sunny outside at the moment!! This year is going incredibly fast, we are over half way through 2013 already!

So what New Year’s Reso-lutions did you make? Have you managed to keep them? Or gave up after one day?

One of mine was to have a better work life balance, al-though I have made this one for several years!

The Beauty Manor have been so busy this year already with new clients, new treat-ments as well as our current clients who have tried new treatments to achieve their own work life balance.

Our most popular treat-ments so far this year have been our Guinot Hydrader-mie Facial Treatment. This is your classic facial, with over 40 years of facial knowledge behind them, Guinot keep this facial true to your clients needs and requirements, al-

lowing you and your skin to feel amazingly hydrated and thoroughly deep cleansed.

Hd Brows are always a very popular treatment in the salon, with brows taking the world by storm. Literally eve-ryone is on about eyebrows or eyebrow tinting! This unique method of enhancing your eyes and face shape has fan-tastic results. Unfortunately, Hd Brows have gained a rep-utation of being dark, thick brows which honestly isn’t the case. At The Beauty Manor, we listen to our clients, assess their face shape and take on board any concerns they have about having Hd Brows. Most clients are nervous of how dark they will be, having seen other people and celebrities, we give 100% reassurance they will be not be dark.

Our new facial Crystal Clear Microdermabrasion is proving to be very popular, with instant results. Immediately, your skin is clearer, brighter, smoother

and lines are less visible just after one treatment, so after a few facials just imagine how much better your skin will ap-pear.

Our faithful Jessica Pedi-cure are always in our top 5 treatments, you just can’t do your own feet like someone else does and you don’t need to have gel on your toes to make them last 4-5 weeks, like they do here at The Beauty Manor. A full hour is spent entirely on your feet, doing the cuticles,

island, and the shopping at-mosphere changes noticeably from packed-in and bustling

to something altogether more refined and spacious. Brows-ing through handpicked cloth-ing, jewellery and lashings of home art and furnishing with the town’s weekend shoppers visiting modern boutiques and quality stores, this really does prove to be the ‘top end’ of town!

At the top end of town, one of our guilty pleasures is window-shopping for a new dream home! As one of the newest businesses in the town, Harrison Murray estate agents have made a smash-ing first impression with their community involvement in the

Harborough Carnival and their charity fund raising events. Househunters benefit from Harrison Murray being part of

a national network of over 1100 affiliated offices; but it’s Cancer Research UK who will benefit from the community-minded estate agents’ ‘Name the Harri-son Murray Bear’ competition, where throughout June and into July customers’ can donate a pound to help find a name for the furry mascot.

Among the many hidden treasures and pleasures is the eating house at Joules Yard, where our banoffee pie and coffee came atmospherically

surrounded by antiques and curios, while al fresco diners enjoyed the sunshine along with an expert’s pick of vintage garden decorations and quirky architectural reclamation good-ies. Shame we just missed the lunchtime acoustic singer-songwriter act.

This was also where we discovered one of Har-borough’s best kept beauty secrets, Beauty Spot, above Joules Yard. Owner managed

by Jane and Jan, the duo offer a range of treatments in-cluding hot stone massage, nail art, facial and body treatments. We were completely sold on their latest skin rejuvenator, and will be straight back to luxuriate and treat ourselves to a massage in their cool Art Deco surroundings.

In Heaven at Home, situ-ated at 30 High Street, is the beautiful new home store which opened in March. The

store sells a unique collec-tion of exotic and imaginative furniture as well as everything you could possibly need to accessorise your home – stun-ning vases, candles, home fra-grance, cushions and throws and lighting. Upstairs The Barber Gallery features afford-able art, prints and sculpture. Inspirational for gifts!

The Angel Hotel is one of our favourite lounge bars in Harborough, and is the regular

haunt of Saturday afternoon shoppers in search of a quality lunch, coffee... or two large glasses of fine, spicy Shiraz, thanks very much! There’s an excellent Diners’ Club offer now running at the Angel, whereby every £10 you spend on food earns a bonus point worth £1.00, which soon adds up to a free meal.

Back down the High Street, Bray and Bray is a regional law firm with over 40 lawyers

practising across their four Leicestershire offices. We’re pleased to welcome to Harbor-ough two new members of the team: Emma Marston, who can help you with wills, admin-istration of estates, powers of attorney and tax planning; and Hannah Bridgwood who specialises in resolving family issues, providing friendly and practical advice on areas such as divorce and financial settle-ment and children issues.

Finally, to the Courtyard, just off the High Street (next to In Heaven at Home), Harbor-ough mums and dads are spoilt for choice. The Ickle Wardrobe was created espe-cially for children and parents who are passionate about fashion. We hand-picked some carefully selected brands, from newborn to age 8, and discovered many designs are fair-trade and utterly organic. It was fun being surrounded by so many bright, bold colours!

The wonderful Wain-wright’s hair salon has also recently moved to the Court-yard, now busier than ever! Wainwright’s specialises in wedding hair and eyecatching prom looks. Sophie William-son’s friendly team are expert in all-round colour and cuts for both men and women.

If after all this walking up and down the high street you feel the need to rest your

feet, you may want to visit Alison Carroll. Alison is a State Registered Chiropodist and runs a podiatry clinic offer-ing diagnosis and treatment of various disorders relating to the feet, ankles, legs and lower back. Alison’s practice is open Tuesday to Saturday inclusive with the opportunity for evening appointments and home visits.

FRI 12 – MON 15 JULYBravura performances from Michael Douglas and Matt Damon are the main attrac-tion in Steven Soderbergh’s glitzy chronicle of the secret, five-year affair between flamboyant Vegas showman Liberace and his young ad-mirer Scott Thorson. Doug-las hits all the right notes as the hedonistic Svengali while Damon more than earns equal bill ing as the lover who discovers the price of celeb-rity excess. Soderbergh sets the piano stool on fire with this torrid tale of sex, drugs and classical piano, based on Thorson’s 1988 memoir.

WOW TAKES A LOOK AT THE LATEST DEALS ON WHEELS

Kia Pro_Cee’d GT

The most eagerly anticipated new model in Kia’s history, the high-performance three-door pro_cee’d GT, is to go on sale in the UK on 1 July priced from £19,995.

Sitting atop the cee’d range, pro_cee’d GT is Kia’s most performance-orientated car and has been developed for an

enthusiastic driving experience whilst remaining practical, af-fordable and comfortable for everyday use. The pro_cee’d GT will be followed in early 2014 by a GT version of the five-door cee’d.

Powered by a turbocharged version of Kia’s 1.6-litre direct-injection petrol engine, the pro_cee’d GT guarantees scin-

tillating performance for a hot hatchback designed not to be the most powerful in class but with everyday usability and civility in mind. It can acceler-ate from 0-60mph in 7.4 sec-onds and has a top speed of 143mph.

Re-tuned suspension en-sures that the pro_cee’d GT is more than capable of han-dling its impressive power and torque outputs – increased damper rebound and compres-sion rates, stiffer springs and bushes and a larger rear anti-roll bar are joined by stylish 18-inch alloy wheels shod with Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres.

The steering has been tuned for a more direct and sporting feel and the Flex Steer function – which allows drivers to select from three levels of power as-sistance in other versions of the pro_cee’d – has been re-moved in the GT. The brakes – 300mm ventilated at the front and 262mm at the rear – are the largest of any fitted to the

cee’d range. The already sporty lines of

the pro_cee’d have been em-bellished with performance-car additions which give the GT a unique look, and it is the same story for the high-quality inte-rior.

Two trim lines – ‘GT’ and ‘GT Tech’ – are being offered, both extensively equipped in typical Kia fashion. But to mark Kia’s entry into the world of perform-ance hatchbacks there is also a limited-production launch mod-el, the ‘GT 1st Edition’. Just 500 examples of this special car are being produced, with only 50 earmarked for the UK.
