AMD Antimicrobial Impregnated Gauze Dressings

Covidien AMD antimicrobial dressings offer additional protection against todays most problematic bacteria like methicillin-resistant Staphlococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE). The AMD family of dressings are effective against Gram + and Gram – bacteria as well as yeast and fungi.

The antimicrobial activity of the Polyhexamethylene Biguanide (PHMB) helps to resist colonisation within and inhibit penetration through the dressing. The barrier function of the dressing may help to reduce infections in partial and full thickness wounds.

Note: Do not use Covidien AMD products with Dakin's Solution or bleach solutions. These solutions deactivate the PHMB and will cause yellowing of the products.

• Moisture and bacterial management are commonly noted as key elements in preparing a wound bed for healing.

• A moist environment helps to speed healing and promotes growth of new tissue.1 Wound exudate is protein and cell rich fluid that is a source of neutrophils and macrophages that are designed to promote healing.2

• Most wounds are contaminated with some level of bacteria, which may not directly inhibit healing. However, when bacteria begin to replicate and form colonies, they may overwhelm the host defense which could potentially lead to delayed healing and infection.3

Kendall™ AMD Antimicrobial Foam Dressings

Kendall™ AMD Antimicrobial Foam dressings have been developed to support your efforts in managing both moisture and bacterial balance. The dressing is an open cell polyurethane foam dressing and is impregnated with 0.5% Polyhexamethylene Biguanide (PHMB), a highly effective, low toxic antimicrobial agent. The dressings are effective against gram positive and gram negative bacteria. They also work against fungi and yeast.

Polyhexamethylene Biguanide (PHMB) is a highly effective, low toxic antimicrobial agent which has been commercially used for over 75 years.

PHMB has a unique mode of action:

• Binds to bacterial phospholipids (outer) membrane • Disrupted membrane allows cytoplasm to leak out • Bacteria cells’ protective layers disintegrate • Bacterial cell collapses and dies leaving a skeleton• Nothing is left behind to mutate or replicate

For comparative purposes and in order to depict a real-life scenario, a clinical isolate of MRSA at 107 was tested on both standard foam and Kendall™ AMD Antimicrobial Foam Dressings. After 168 hours, the contrast is staggering.

The antimicrobial foam discs impregnated with 0.5% PHMB help to provide a protective barrier for catheter insertion sites such as central venous catheters (CVC) and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs). The Kendall™ AMD antimicrobial foam discs are also ideal for use around external fixation devices.

Polyskin™ II Transparent Dressings

Polyskin II transparent dressings consist of a thin polymer film coated with a hypoallergenic adhesive. Polyskin II is supplied as a sterile, oxygen and moisture vapour permeable dressing. The transparent film is impenetrable to water and bacteria.

Polyskin II transparent dressings are placed with a simple, effective delivery system which allows for one-handed application. A new acrylic adhesive performs better in wet and dry conditions which results in fewer dressings changes.

Please Note: Painless removal by horizontally stretching the Polyskin promotes breaking the adhesive.

A sterile non-adherent protective dressing consisting of fine mesh absorbent gauze impregnated with 3% Bismuth Tribromophenate in a petrolatum blend.

Bismuth Tribromophenate has bactrostatic properties, helping to decrease bacterial colonisation.

Can be used:

• As an initial layer for surgical incision sites, donor sites and skin graft recipient sites
