We invite you to Portland’s Music at The Madeleine concert series.

Our 2016-17 series includes 3 masterpieces and audience favorites of Baroque, Contemporary and Sacred Jazz music: George F. Handel’s MESSIAH, Oregon composer Ernest Bloch’s Sacred Service, and Dave Brubeck’s A Light in the Wilderness.

Concerts are performed by the 50-voice Bravo! Chorale, Northwest Chamber Orchestra and nationally acclaimed jazz and classical conductors and soloists.

Music at The Madeleine is hosted by The Madeleine Parish and School community and created by Bravo! Northwest. For more than 20 years, Bravo! North-west has produced regional & international concerts including the Bravo! Concert Series, Vancouver Wine & Jazz Festival, and Dubrovnik Jazz Festival.

Handel’s Messiah. Since 1992 we have presented over 25 performances of this timeless classic to more than 15,000 people! Join the Bravo! Chorale & Northwest Chamber Orchestra as we begin the Christmas season with this Bravo! concert tradition.

The legendary jazz pianist Dave Brubeck is loved for his renditions of Blue Rondo a la

Turk, Take Five, In Your Own Sweet Way, and other jazz stan-

dards. Brubeck was also a highly regarded composer of sacred jazz choral

music such as: A Light in the Wilderness; To Hope: A Celebration; The Gates of Justice; and Beloved Son. This music blends his classical training, jazz rhythms, and improvisational skills – and was inspired by his profoundly deep faith. Our con-cert features selections from Dave Brubeck’s best sacred songs, oratorios and masses, performed by the Bravo! Northwest Chorale and the Dan Brubeck Jazz Quartet. It’s a concert of music that is uniquely Brubeck!

The American Jewish com-poser Ernest Bloch lived in the Pacific Northwest and made Agate Beach, Ore-gon his home. Composed for Choir, Soloist and Orchestra, Bloch’s Sacred Service (1933) is based upon the Jewish Sabbath morning service—and portrays the Jewish prayers in a lush, Romantic style. In contrast, Oliver Messiaen’s dra-matic Quartet for the End of Time (1941, for piano, clarinet, violin & cello) was inspired by the Book of Revelation and his Catholic faith. It was premiered during WWII at a German POW camp by Messiaen and his fellow prisoners. This is music inspired by two faiths with a common theme — peace for a troubled world. You won’t want to miss this inspir-ing and unique multi-media concert.
