Our news team at WOSU’s 89.7 FM NPR News has been named the Best News Operation in the state of Ohio by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).

See the full story on page 3 from News Director Mike Thompson, who with producer Diana Bergemann, also won top honors for the Columbus on the Record television program. The SPJ awards were dominated by public radio stations, with WOSU taking the lead with four top awards for best reporting, anchor, editor, and website. Other public media stations across Ohio including WKSU at Kent State, WCPN in Cleveland and WVXU in Cincinnati were also recognized.

When I caught my first break in broadcasting, it was through part-time jobs at a variety of commercial AM stations doing local news. Today, if you want in-depth news beyond the

breaking story, you have to tune to public radio. Aside from our team of journalists, another example of our commitment to news is All Sides with Ann Fisher, a two-hour radio talk program that focuses on a variety of local and regional issues.

I love radio news because it fits in to a busy lifestyle. I can get caught up on what’s happening when stuck on 315 or while making dinner or mowing the lawn at home. That’s why radio remains such a powerful medium despite all the changes in how information is delivered.

The fact that we have one of the top radio

newsrooms in Ohio right here in Columbus should

make us feel proud. We hope it makes you want to support these efforts. We need your help in sustaining this quality

journalism, and we’ll be asking for it directly on October 11th when we begin our Fall Membership Drive on 89.7 FM. WOSU equals quality journalism only because of member support from you. Thanks for continuing your support or joining us for the first time!

Join WOSU for Political Junkie Road Show Live EventWednesday, October 10 at 7pm • wosu.org/politicaljunkie

Join Talk of the Nation host Neal Conan and Political Junkie Ken Rudin for an evening of politics, trivia, puzzles…and bad jokes. “That’s one small pun for a man,” Conan said, “one giant groan for mankind.”

WOSU presents NPR’s Political Junkie Road Show October 10 at 7pm, live at the Fawcett Center Auditorium on The Ohio State University campus.

Conan and Rudin of NPR’s Talk of the Nation will offer their unique perspective on all things political as the election year builds to a climax. Political Junkie is one of the most popular segments on Talk of the Nation. This is your chance to hear in person Neal and Ken’s take on the remarkably close and very contentious presidential election, Ohio’s political climate and the crucial races around the nation.

Admission is free. Seating for the event is limited so pre-register at wosu.org/politicaljunkie. Contributions support the 89.7 NPR News Fall Membership Drive. Doors open at 6:30pm. The program begins at 7pm.

30th Season of WoSU’S

In the Know KicKS off

Another season of WOSU’s high school quiz show, In the Know, begins on Thursday, October 11 at 5:30pm! Tune in to see the brightest students in central Ohio put their brains to work in this fast-paced program hosted by Bill Schiffman and sponsored by Westfield Insurance.

Thursdays at 5:30pm on WOSU TVFor the third year in a row,

WOSU’s 89.7 FM NPR News captured the biggest prize in the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists annual award competition. The SPJ named WOSU’s 89.7 FM Ohio’s Best News Operation for 2011.

The SPJ’s “Best of Ohio Journalism Awards” honor the best of Ohio’s print, broadcast, online, trade, and college journalism produced in 2011. WOSU’s work was compared to that of all radio stations in Ohio.

The WOSU radio news team dominated the individual and station awards — capturing four out of seven. In addition to the best operation nod, Steve Brown was named best anchor, Mandie Trimble best reporter and Sam Hendren best editor. WOSU’s website (wosu.org/news) also earned Ohio’s best radio news website award.

89.7’s Mandie Trimble led the way with three first place reporting awards: general assignment reporting, for her report on the tiny post office in Magnetic Springs;

healthcare reporting for her story on infants addicted to drugs at birth, and investigative reporting for her work digging into the sale of Nationwide Arena to Columbus and Franklin County taxpayers.

Tom Borgerding won two second place awards — one for environmental reporting for his story The Politics of Clean Air and another for recession impact reporting for his story on Ohio’s unemployment rate. Marilyn Smith captured a second place consumer reporting prize for a story detailing public confusion over the disposal of florescent light bulbs which contain mercury.

And the SPJ did not ignore WOSU TV. It honored Columbus on the Record as

Ohio’s best public affairs show.

WOSU will receive its awards at a ceremony September 30th at The Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati.

By Michael Thompson, News and Public Affairs Director

“The awards reflect the talents of WOSU news reporters, the breadth of their work and the commitment of WOSU listeners to quality local news coverage.”

Narrated by Tony Award-winning actor Philip Bosco, this film focuses on the eight men responsible for designing and building the stadium. Rare photos, historical film footage, and extensive interviews with historians and the architects’ friends and family tell a story about victorious triumph and a dream that still stands, three-quarters of a century later — despite financial setbacks, a world war and staunch opponents.

Cambridge Project, Part 2 The crew removes a central chimney brick-by-brick so they can be reused on another job, host Kevin O’Connor visits an “eco” resale store in Springfield, Massachusetts, and landscape contractor Roger Cook removes a sick Norway maple with the help of an arborist. In the second half of the hour, on Ask This Old House, Roger helps a homeowner install a bluestone patio in an urban backyard. Then, Roger, along with Kevin, plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey, and general contractor Tom Silva, asks, “What is it?” Afterward, Tom helps a homeowner and her daughter hang their bikes in a small garage.NExT AIR 10/19/12 • 4:00 AM

future. Each BURN special will follow the quest for energy answers and the stirring public initiative required to transition to this new energy world.

BURN: An Energy Journal’s Election Special, the Power of OneOctober 7: Part 1 & October 14: Part 2

The upcoming November general election is about power and the power to shape the nation’s priorities both domestic and foreign. Energy policy, defining how we use energy to power our economy and our lives, is among the pressing issues politicians will debate in the election. It is the "power of one" – whether one man or woman, one event, one idea, one election – that we embrace, will be the framework for the next edition of BURN.

Alex Chadwick

It is the fundamental issue of our time: energy — where we get it, how we use it and what happens to it. It powers our homes and our economy; it creates troubled alliances and disturbing divisions; it empowers and impoverishes; it enables almost all that we do and now threatens all that we have become. BURN: An Energy Journal is hosted by one of public radio’s most trusted journalists and master storytellers, Alex Chadwick. Alex will explore our energy future through the intimate stories of visionaries of research, maverick inventors, industry insiders, and concerned citizens. These personal stories will help explain how and why we face an energy crisis, the dilemma of the continuing demand for energy, the realities and consequences of a mostly carbon-based industry and infrastructure, and some possible alternatives and personal/global solutions for our climate

The Fastest Baton in the West: Sir Georg Solti in CelebrationOctober 21–27 on Classical 101

During the 4th week in October, Classical 101 is joining the worldwide celebration of one of the 20th century’s most important and influential conductors—the 100th birth anniversary of Sir Georg Solti.

Born in Budapest on October 21, 1912, his profile grew quickly in Europe, eventually bringing him to the United States in 1969 to serve as music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Solti has the distinction of winning more Grammy Awards than any other recording artist. In January 2012, Solti’s performance of Der Ring des Nibelungen with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra was named the greatest recording of all time by BBC Music Magazine, the same distinction awarded earlier by Gramophone magazine in 1999.

Classical 101 will feature several of Solti’s memorable recordings throughout the week of October 21. Of special note are the scheduled symphonies by Haydn, Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Brahms, and Mahler on Symphony@7 with John Rittmeyer and Wagner’s opera Siegfried on Saturday On Stage with Christopher Purdy, October 27 at noon. Visit our classical blog, wosu.org/classical101, for insights shared by our classical hosts into the world of Georg Solti.
