YAGOONA & BANKSTOWN NORTH RENOVATIONS

Yagoona and Bankstown North Oral Health Clinics underwent renovations during

May, June and July 2015. Both clinics went through major changes.

Through our hard work we were able to achieve something pretty amazing…

Through our team work and muscles we packed every surgery, every instrument,

every medical record, took down posters, packed stock … we lost count of how many boxes we used !

Yagoona Oral Health Clinic has recently undergone further renovations ...

We are proud to announce that Yagoona Oral Health Clinic will increase from a four chair clinic to a nine chair clinic which will provide an opportunity to increase the number of clinical services delivered from our premises.

Thank you

For many years, staff have worked in a deteriorating building with several cluttered and underutilised rooms.

The renovations will now provide a more pleasant environment for staff to work in and for patients to attend. The addition of five dental surgeries will assist Oral Health to meet the growing demand for dental services in the Bankstown LGA. The new services provide holistic care in a team environment with state of the art equipment.

We have already received many compliments from our patients and relieving staff members.

Yagoona and Bankstown North Staff would like to give thanks to our Director, Associate Professor Ravi Srinivas and our Business Manager, Mr Richard Nguyen for making all of this possible.

R-L : Deputy Manager of Capital Works Nicole Burr, Director A/Prof Ravi Srinivas, Director of Capital Works David Ryan, Project Manager Kon Kougias and Business Manager Richard Nguyen.

SWSLHD Consumer Participation Unit

Thanks to the SWSLHD Consumer and Community Participation Unit for inviting the Oral Health Services to it’s Christmas Party in December 2015. Our staff and the consumers had a great time as you can see here at the Bankstown Sports Bowls Club, which was held just before the SWSLHD Annual Public Meeting, which we all just walked across the road and attended. The Christmas Party is also a time where the Consumer and Community Participation Unit awards a peer nominated award for their Harry Collins Award for Excellence in Consumer and Community Participation. This is the 9th time for this much respected award and was won by Sharon Smith from the Macarthur CCP Network. Each of the 8 nominees were very excited to be nominated with two special judges commendations awarded as well. Some of the Oral Health Services staff will know Sharon as she assisted us with our focus groups and evidence for our Organisation Wide Survey for Accreditation last year. COHORTE Collaboration for Oral Health Outcomes, Research, Translation and Evaluation

Promoting Oral Health in the Cardiac Setting Paula Sanchez, PhD Student/COHORTE Group, attended the Australasian Cardiovascular Nursing College Conference (ACNC) held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) on the 4th and 5th of March 2016, Melbourne Victoria. She was invited as a Conference speaker to present the Cardiovascular Oral Health (CARDIOH) project that focuses on developing and testing an oral health promotion program (including an assessment tool and education program) initiated by cardiac nurses in a cardiovascular rehabilitation setting. As part of the project Paula also had a stall at the Conference with the purpose of presenting the CARDIOH project and to recruit cardiac clinicians to participate in phone interviews to talk about their perceptions. Participants were very interested during the presentation and many wanted to participate in the project which they considered very relevant and necessary in the cardiac setting.

A BIG Hello to everyone, As you know I am the Oral Health Ambassador for the Workplace Giving Program. Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who is participating in this very worthwhile Program and for the new recruits that signed up at the launch last year.

Without your support, the 20 bed maternity hospital in Africa would not be able to operate. Your generosity is much appreciated. For the staff that don’t know what Workplace Giving Program is:

It is a program that invites staff to donate only $1 a week, yes you read right, to support the Barbara May Foundation, to help run a 20 bed maternity hospital in Africa, actually in the poorest regions of Africa, to reduce the horrible complications associated with Obstetric fistula tearing during labour.

Since the operation of the hospital, the mortality rate in pregnant women has drastically dropped to 1 death in 12 women to only 1 death in 24 months! … that alone is amazing!!!

Your $1 also pays for staff working in the hospital

Your $1 also pays for training community birth attendants in villages doing antenatal screening for mothers who deliver in their nomadic homes

Your $1 also pays for maternity waiting areas along main roads for emergency risk deliveries

And the best news of all, your WHOLE $1 goes to the Barbara May Foundation, NOT a portion of your $1.

Now what can $1 buy here in our beautiful country ? Not much really. Normally its loose change that you find at the bottom of your bag. If your looking for a charity to donate to, then the Barbara May Foundation is for you !!! It’s easy to sign up, either by filling out the brochures that will be delivered shortly and giving them to me or signing up online on our Intranet by clicking on to the Workplace Giving Program link.

PLEASE SUPORT THIS FANTATSTIC CHARITY ! Not only will you be helping the women out from reducing the risk of fistula tearing,

but you will also FEEL GOOD about helping someone in need Till next time, Ambassador Erdes

Did you know ? ... We display the Australian Charter of

Healthcare Rights in our Oral Health clinics ?

Did you know ? … The Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights was developed by the Commission in 2007- 8 with extensive and widespread consultation and specifies the key rights of patients and consumers when seeking or receiving healthcare services. In July 2008, Australian Health Ministers endorsed the charter as the Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights for use across the country.

The charter applies to all health settings anywhere in Australia, including public hospitals, private hospitals, general practice and other community services. It is for the information of patients and health services providers and allows patients and health service providers to have a common understanding of the rights of people who are receiving health care.

There are two brochures regarding the Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights.

The Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights - A Healthcare Providers Guide which discusses each of the ( seven ) Charter rights and will give you guidance in ways you can contribute to ensuring that the rights are upheld and the Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights - A Guide for Patients, Consumers, Carers and Families which discusses each of the ( seven ) Charter rights and provides some guidance for patients, consumers, carers and families on ways they can contribute to ensuring that the rights are upheld. It advises patients, consumers, carers and families they are entitled to raise issues about their healthcare rights and are encouraged to read the Charter or have it explained to them and to discuss the Charter with their healthcare provider / family / car-er.

All of our Oral Health clinics have been issued posters of the Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights - it's an A3 size laminated Poster. Do you know where you clinics poster is located ? If not, please ask your SDO / SDA.

ORAL HEALTH SERVICE MANAGERS - Who are your Managers ?

There is still some confusion among staff as to who is their line manager for reporting purposes. All clinicians in each clinic report to the Senior Dental Officer of the clinic or to the senior most Dental Officer in the clinic. All Dental Assistants and Admin Staff in the clinic report to the Senior Dental Assistant of the clinic. SDO’s and SDA’s are the management team in each clinic and are responsible for the day to day running of the clinic. The Service Manager is the operational manager for all clinics. The Business Manager’s role is primarily financial and performance related (unless acting as Service Manager). The Performance Unit, Purchasing and OHFFSS Processing Staff report directly to the Business Manager. SDO’s have operational reporting to the Service Manager and Business Manager. SDO’s work in partnership with the Service Manager. SDA’s have operational and functional reporting to the Service Manager and Business Manager. Operational reporting means running of the clinic i.e. staffing, maintenance, repairs, HR etc. Functional reporting means professional support, clinical decision making etc. The staff who report to me directly are Oral Health Executive ( Service, Business and Acting Quality Managers) and Executive Assistant. SDO’s only have functional reporting to me and not operational. Future matters as mentioned above will be referred to the appropriate manager for action. I hope the above clarifies any questions. Regards,

MANDATORY TRAINING

Mandatory Training means training and/or education in a defined subject matter that must be undertaken by specified staff of a NSW Health entity due to:

A legislative requirement

A requirement to be accredited under the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards ( NSQHS ) and / or

A requirement under a Policy Directive issued by the Ministry of Health. In July 2014, NSW Health launched it’s state wide Mandatory Training Policy PD2014_023 which is applicable to all employees within SWSLHD. All NSW Health employees have an Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) code in their Stafflink profile and this code is linked to the mandatory training requirements as listed in the Mandatory Training Matrix. The Mandatory Training Matrix provides an overview of mandatory training requirements for NSW Health Staff. All clinical and non-clinical occupations within NSW Health have been identified on the matrix and specifically targeted for training at a state wide level. Further details on these codes are included in the Matrix document which can be found on the Intranet under Training and Education, SWS CEWD, Orientation & Mandatory Education, Mandatory Education. There have been new courses assigned to Dental Officers, Dental Assistants and Administration Staff such as Between the Flags : Tier 2 and Asking the Question : Improving the Identification of Aboriginal People. Please log in to HETI Online to complete these and any outstanding courses you may have as soon as possible. Please note, Fire Training and Basic Life Support ( BLS ) are due to expire for most staff, therefore please discuss with your SDO / SDA to ensure you complete these as they become due.

Do you know how to locate HETI Online ?
