THE KINGDOM, LIKE LIFE & LOVE, IS A REALITY THAT HAS INTRINSIC WORTH

The last three weekends we have heard Jesus teaching parables about the Kingdom of God. He spoke about the importance of the environment that we allow God’s word to take root within our lives. He further taught that there is a dynamic quality to God’s word and the Kingdom; it grows. We cannot judge its presence by a simple, one-time observation. This week Jesus speaks of the supreme value of God’s word and the Kingdom.

When it comes to evaluating the value of things, appearances can be deceiving. Many a lad my age forfeited future riches by putting baseball cards in their bicycle spokes or throwing them away when we became too old. Zirconia gemstones can look priceless while expensive jewelry tossed in a box can look like costume jewelry. Some antiques are worth a lot of money and others just old junk. The friendships that we come to most appreciate in life are often not the people we wanted to be friends at some point in our lives.

We have become accustomed to understanding “value” as externally deter-mined. That is, an object’s value depends on its popularity against its avail-ability, the price of its components, and other factors that can rise and fall over time. The Kingdom, like life and love, is a reality that has intrinsic worth. Union with God is our ultimate source of happiness because it completes who we are created to be. Its value is not determined by Wall Street, Madison Avenue or the latest media poll. The essence of God does not grow or lessen over time; God eternally is.

In his parable, Jesus observes that we will go to extreme lengths to gain what we covet the most. There is always a risk involved. The pearl may indeed by flawed, someone may find the treasure that we reburied, but we will be single minded in our pursuit of such things. Think for a moment of something that you desired greatly: an achievement, a relationship, a possession, a status, etc. What kinds of things were you willing to sacrifice to obtain this? How much time and effort did you have to dedicate in your pursuit? And now, for the ultimate question, was all that time, effort, sacrifice, and cost worth it? Did you find the happiness, success and understanding that you desired, or did you discover that much of it was an illusion and not satisfying?

Contrast this with the time you spend in prayer, spiritual reading and trying to live a life of virtue. If there is not a similar dedication and effort to obtaining the other things that you value in life, perhaps you are still not convinced in the practical importance of God’s Kingdom. Perhaps the parables are encouraging you to re-evaluate the primacy of God in your life, and if you are finding the happiness that you seek. Sometimes we have the false belief that we must work hard in life to achieve what we want, but that the spiritual life should come easi-ly to us. Jesus says the opposite is true. God desires our best and always offers us his grace. However, we have to cooperate with that grace, and push aside the distractions and false treasures that compete for our attention. -- Father Phil

ST GREGORY CAMPGROUND (CAMPFIRES & CAMARADERIE)

St Gregory Campground was purchased from the Diocese of Portland in 1977 by St Gregory Church. It was run seasonally as a Campground on the banks of Crystal Lake for many years and is now in the process of undergoing renovation by the St Gregory Campground Committee.

St Gregory Campground consists of 10 A-Frame Cabins, which can sleep up to six people and two larger cottages which can sleep eight or more. In addition, there is a bathhouse, gathering hall and dock.

The Campground has hosted many, many family gatherings as well as parishioner campfires, sing alongs and overnight camping over the years. The Campground has hosted Charismatic Renewal Groups, Marriage Encounter, Boy Scouts, Searchers and many, many Faith Formation Groups.

If you would like to participate in the renovation of the Campground or make a donation to the Campground renovation expenses please email Father Phil and he will put you in contact with the Campground Committee.

OUR FAMILY PRAYS: “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Jesus, help us to come as close to you as possible, each day, through prayer, the Gospels and kind acts. Help us to build the ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ on earth and work side by side with our neighbors as your laborers. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

GOSPEL BACKGROUND: Matthew 13:44-52 — Like last week, in today’s Gospel, Jesus continues to describe the Kingdom of Heaven with 3 other similes. A simile is a figure of speech (a phrase) that compares two different things in an inter-esting way. In his parables, Jesus says that the Kingdom of Heaven is like...a treasure buried in a field which someone finds and hides again and then sells all that he has to buy that field with that precious pearl in it; like...a merchant who finds a pearl of great price and sells all he has to buy it; like...a net thrown into the sea and when it is hauled ashore, the fisherman put what is good into buckets and throw away what’s bad. He is talking not about things but about us! What and where is our treasure and what do we sacrifice to treasure it? When Jesus talks about the Kingdom of God or Heaven, he is describing the kingdom that he is King of, Earth and Heaven. His presence on Earth meant that God, and therefore, Heaven, came to us. Jesus came to announce the Kingdom of God (Heaven). All the holy thoughts, words and actions that we practice build the Kingdom of Heaven, on earth.

SUMMER SERIES 2020—TRUE STORIES THAT HELP US GROW IN FAITH: Meet Mary’s Parents and Jesus’ Grandparents: St. Anne & St. Joachim. July 26th is their feast day!

Joachim and Anne were the parents of Jesus’ mother, Mary. We don’t know many details about their lives because they are never mentioned in the New Testa-ment. Everything we know about them comes down through tradition—the stories people told about them.

We believe that they were respected members of the Jewish community and that they wanted to become

parents so much that Joachim went into the desert to fast and pray that God would hear their prayer. It is said that an angel told them that they would soon have a daughter who would become famous throughout the world. Months later, Mary, our Blessed Mother, was born. Tradition tells us that when Mary was three years old, Anne and Joachim took her to the temple in Jerusalem to consecrate her for special service to the Lord. We call this celebration the “Presentation of the Virgin Mary.” It means that Mary was to play an important part in God’s loving plan for the world.

We honor Mary’s parents, Joachim and Anne, as saints. We celebrate their joint feast day on July 26. Their love for one another and for Mary is an example to us of how God calls us to live. They also remind us to honor our own grandparents and to thank them for the blessings they have passed down to us in love.

The beautiful shrine of Ste. Anne de Beaupre in Quebec, Canada, is devoted to St. Anne, and in the Middle Ages numerous churches, chapels, and confraterni-ties were dedicated to her. There is a church of St. Anne in Jerusalem, and it is believed to be built on the site of the home of Sts. Joachim and Anne when they lived in Jerusalem. Anne is the patron of grandmothers and Joachim of grandfa-thers and grandparents.
