Pastor’s Message:

Listen to your Soul!

You have heard the expression, “Listen to your heart!” There can be value there. It can lead us to do what is meaningful for us. It

can help us focus on what is important to us like our family. It can push us to take that leap and tell someone we love how important they are to us even if we are unsure how they feel about us. But it can also be dangerous. It can lead us to do what is important to us at the moment instead of what really matters. It can tempt us to react out of anger or jealousy or hurt feelings and damage relationships that are very valuable to us. It can end in a broken heart or a bitter outlook. We need to remember that feelings are not facts and do a little soul searching to check our feelings against what matters to the depth of our soul.

Therefore, listen to your soul! That is what we need to do. Great, how do I do that? It is easier said than done. We actually know the answer, we just have a hard time putting the solution into consistent use. The answer is: connecting with God by reading your Bible, going to church and praying to God in a way that you open your soul to Him and start to learn how to hear His response; and connecting with people in meaningful ways by spending quality time together, having vulnerable conversations, accepting others for who they are not what you want them to be and helping those in need joyfully even when it involves a sacrifice on your part.

Why don’t we do this? We are tempted to fall into unhealthy habits of being consumed with the busyness of life. We get lazy and do stuff we want to do instead of stuff that will really make a difference in our lives. When we attempt to make a connection with someone important to us we run into barriers like they are stuck in a

trap of busyness or laziness. We get frustrated with them instead of realizing they are in the same situation we were in a week or more before.

If we can come before God and pray with our soul opened wide, He can fill us to overflowing. After a time of prayer, we can read a Psalm and a few other passages and then pray again seeking the leading of the Holy Spirit that He will give us the fruit of humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:2-3). When we are tempted to give up we read Galatians 6:9 and we are reminded: “Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” Romans 5:3-5 says, “We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”

Don’t forget to let God forgive you when you fail to follow these steps. We live in a cycle of wash, rinse and repeat. God never says you have come to the well one too many times. He is always there to wash us clean from our sin and rinse away any remnant of it and provide another opportunity to repeat life full of love, hope and mercy.

May the encouragement of God’s Word, the fellowship of your brothers and sisters in Christ and the loving leading of the Holy Spirt give you joy in your heart and peace in your soul. Listen to the Lord as He whispers to your soul.

With love, Pastor!

Incline your ear, and come to me;

listen, so that you may live.

Isaiah 55:3

Swaddled in God’s law of love

Pastor John Edgerton tells of swaddling his 2-week-old baby to help her feel secure. She loved being wrapped tightly in a soft blanket and would lie quietly — until she managed to work a tiny arm loose. Then she’d scream until someone rewrapped her. Edgerton likens that behavior to his own connection with God’s law, given so people can live in peace. “I know that I’m supposed to do the right thing, but I’m always wiggling out of it,” he writes. “And very quickly my life falls into a state of disarray.” We’ve all experienced this. We know we are to love our neighbors as ourselves, yet we often ignore their needs. Jesus says to love our enemies, but we wiggle around it: “That’s too naïve for this day and age.” But then relationships crumble, life feels crazy and we recognize that, in large part, we’ve done it to ourselves. Over and over, we wiggle out of the soft swaddle of God’s law of love, only to flail. Thankfully, like a loving parent, God wraps us up anew, holds us close and saves us from ourselves — again.

Self-fulfilling prophecies

“Children have this amazing way of becoming exactly who we tell them they are,” writes Amy Weatherly. “If we tell them they are strong, they become strong. If we tell them they are kind, they become kind.” Perhaps Jesus knows this when he tells his disciples, “You are the salt of the earth [and] the light of the world” (Matthew 5:13-14). Clearly they haven’t already mastered sharing Jesus’ goodness with everyone! They are works in progress, as are we. But Jesus, teacher that he is, seems to set the bar high so his followers will strive to meet his expectations. “You are Peter,” Jesus tells Simon, “and on this rock I will build my church” (Matthew 16:18). We can hear Weatherly: “If we tell them they’re faithful, they become faithful.” And when Jesus declares, “You are of more value than many sparrows” (Matthew 10:31), we believe in our worth and live it out. We become what Jesus tells us we are.

She was beautiful...

but not like those girls in the magazine.

She was beautiful for the way she thought.

She was beautiful for the sparkle in her eyes when she talked about something she loved.

She was beautiful for her ability to make other people smile even if she was sad.

No she wasn’t beautiful for something as temporary as her looks she was beautiful deep down to her soul.

She is beautiful.

F. Scott Fitzgerald

We are all beautiful when we walk in the light of our Heavenly Father.

Summer

Rain

Oh, what is so pure as the glad summer rain, That falls on the grass where the sunlight has lain? And what is so fair as the flowers that lie All bathed in the tears of the soft summer sky? The blue of the heavens is dimmed by the rain That wears away sorrow and washes out pain; But we know that the flowers we cherish would die Were it not for the tears of the cloud-laden sky. The rose is the sweeter when kissed by the rain, And hearts are the dearer where sorrow has lain; The sky is the fairer that rain-clouds have swept, And no eyes are so bright as the eyes that have wept. —Fannie Sherrick
