CWM CHRISTMAS SHOPPE TO BE HELD SATURDAY, DECEMBER 14 – For Christmas, the Charitable Works Ministry will set up a “Santa Shoppe” where families can obtain gifts for their children. We are asking for donations of GENTLY USED items that would make great gifts for boys and girls. Gifts could be anything from a gently used football, ball cap with team logos or baseball glove to jewelry, scarves, belts and headbands your children have outgrown. For some of our clients, these may be the only gifts their children receive. Please place your donations in the blue bins at the south entrance marked “CWM” by Sunday, December 8.

ONLINE GIVING NOW AVAILABLE – We are excited to announce that we are now able to accept weekly offertory and special envelope donations, in addition to Charitable Works donations, through our new online giving system! We are grateful for the ongoing support of our mission and ministry from St. Matthew Parishioners, and we are pleased to be able to offer this user-friendly system, which allows individuals to control all aspects of how and when they give. For detailed information about how to take advantage of online giving, please see our website: www.stmatthew.net/giving.

VISITING MINISTRY – Saint Matthew Parish has numerous care facilities for the elderly within its boundaries. In these care centers as well as in private homes, there are numerous parishioners who could enjoy a visitor every once in a while. When I go to visit or to take Communion, these elderly are so appreciative. Please consider becoming a part of our Visiting Ministry and sharing a half hour of your time each week or every other week with someone who is lonely. If you are interested, please contact Carol Ann Lombardi at 614-478-4328 or [email protected].

THE SAINT MATTHEW ROSARY GUILD meets the first Monday of the month. The next meeting is Monday, December 2 at 7:00 p.m. in the Saint Gabriel Room. Have you ever wanted to know how to make a rosary, or wanted to be a member of a group that makes them? The Rosary Guild at Saint Matthew will provide the instruction, and together as a group, we will make rosaries for our parish community and for others. If you would like to join, please contact Judy Sater at 614-477-8323 or [email protected] prior to the meeting.

ATTENTION, MEN! Do you want to develop a closer relationship with God? Do you like to snow ski or snowboard? If so, please consider joining Wilderness Outreach on its 3rd annual Wilderness Outreach ski trip to Summit County, Colorado on February 2-8, 2020. Fr. Matthew Hoover of Immaculate Conception will be our chaplain. This outing will include Liturgy of the Hours, daily Mass, and as much skiing/snowboarding as your legs can handle. We will also read a book on masculine spirituality or related topic prior to arrival and discuss that book each night after dinner. A rough estimate of costs is around $1,500.00 for the condo, airfare, lift tickets, rental car, and food. If you are interested or need more information, please contact Christopher Walsh at [email protected] or 614-580-7059. Space is extremely limited, so reserve your spot today!

SOLEMNITY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE NOVEMBER 24, 2019

PARISH PROJECTSAs good stewards of your generosity, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide regular updates on St. Matthew campus projects, improvements, ongoing initiatives, and enhancements. Please welcome the newest member of our Facilities Team, Renee Helms. With childcare and residential cleaning experience, she is a shared resource with our school Latchkey Program. Renee has been working with our school children from 2:00-6:00 p.m. daily in addition to helping to cover janitorial tasks, initially focusing on deep cleaning areas of the church, including the parish office. Our church building includes over 26,000 square feet of Sanctuary, meeting and office space. While Ben is doing a great job of keeping our facility in good order, we would like to take it to the next level. Welcome aboard Renee! You may have noticed beeping sounds in the church’s Gathering Space and the Parish Activity Center lobby in the school. As part of our campus Safety and Security Program, we have three Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). Our AEDs are strategically located outside the church, school and athletic director’s offices. Two of our units were beeping to indicate the batteries needed to be checked. While these AEDs were operational, Cardiac Science agreed to replace our batteries under warranty; they are designed to last at least four years, but these were not going to make it another year. We went ahead and replaced all the pads which have a two-year shelf life. There is no more beeping. We continue to chip away at two projects that are taking longer than they should -- the church sound system and the outdoor LED conversion. The LED conversion has been dependent on weather and bulb availability so the project continues. Adjustments to the sound system this week included additional fill speakers to the right and left of the Altar. We also changed the frequencies on all of our wireless mics. Apparently, last month one of our local TV stations added channels which overlapped and disrupted our mic frequencies causing them to lose strength and stability. Moving to other channels has made significant improvements. We appreciate this opportunity to provide these updates and welcome suggestions for facility enhancements. Please contact George Harvey at [email protected]. DIVINE MERCY ADORATION CHAPEL

“Adoration outside Holy Mass prolongs and intensifies what has taken place in the liturgical celebration and makes a true and profound reception of Christ possible. I …warmly recommend, to Pastors and to all the faithful, the practice of Eucharistic Adoration.”

– Pope Benedict XVIIf you’d like to make a weekly commitment, or get more information, please contact Jeff Bernard at [email protected] or 216-372-4991. CAN YOU NOT WATCH ONE HOUR WITH ME?Over 100 Benefits of Eucharistic Adoration: #4: “Perpetual Adoration extends its influence far beyond the individual adorers, touching their homes and families and reaching out to the parish community and beyond.” (St. Pope Paul VI)Visitors are welcome Monday-Friday from 6:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m. and on Saturday & Sunday from 7:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

Please visit StMatthew.net/DMC for more info.

CALL TO COME HOME – If you’ve been away from the Church, are drifting away, feel confused, hurt or angry, have questions or concerns, this is an invitation to talk with us. Please contact Pat Martin at [email protected].

PARISH NURSERY – We are happy to offer a nursery for young children during the 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon Masses on Sundays, but we are unable to offer nursery care during the other weekend Masses due to lack of available volunteers. The safety of our children is our top priority, so we thank you for understanding. If you have any questions about the nursery, please contact Maria Ohalek at [email protected].

BOY SCOUTS “GOOD TURN” FOR AMERICA – SCOUTING FOR FOOD FOR CWM’S FOOD PANTRY – The Boy Scouts of America are collecting canned goods and nonperishable food items to replenish the Nation's food pantries as winter sets in. All across the Nation, Boy Scout units have mobilized and will be "Scouting for Food." Food donated to Boy Scout Troop 317, sponsored by St. Matthew Parish, will be given to our Charitable Works Ministry for local distribution. Please bring your food items in this weekend, November 23-24. You may leave them at the south entrance of the church (portico entrance). The point of contact is Assistant Scoutmaster, Tom Liszkay at 614-476-2044.

PARISHIONER MELINA MCSWEENY IS COLLECTING CANNED GOODS FOR ST. FRANCIS DESALES HIGH SCHOOL which benefits St. Stephan’s food pantry. You can help by donating non-perishable food items (such as, ramen noodles, canned soup, peanut butter, or canned vegetables). You can place your donated items in the labeled box by the church portico doors. She will be collecting cans until Thursday, December 5. Email [email protected] with any questions. Thank you for your generosity!

We gave out 20,321 items (baby blankets, hats, scarves, lap robes, prayer shawls, children & adult blankets, baby sweaters, gloves, etc.) to 53 organizations. Thank you for all your prayers, yarn, monetary donations, making items and help on Distribution Day. God has blessed this ministry so we can help those in need. Please contact Mrs. Glenda Neely at 614-563-0275 if you would like to join and make donations.

Recently, two assisted living facilities have opened in our parish area, which has put a strain on our existing In-Home EMHC, requiring the need for additional EMHC. If interested or you want to learn more, contact Max Maksimoski at [email protected].

ARE YOU READY TO MAKE THIS ADVENT A REAL PREPARATION FOR CHRISTMAS?

Have you ever felt that when Christmas comes around that you’re just not ready? Of all the liturgical seasons of the year, Advent is certainly the most stressful, and it may be the most confusing. Catholics seem to have a good grasp of Christmas, Lent, and Easter. But what is the deeper meaning of Advent? And how can understanding this season help us better prepare for Christmas? Beginning this Advent season, the Sunday Mass Reading Explained sessions will be expanded to help you gain a firm foundation on the meaning of Advent.Join us along with video presenter, Dr. Brant Pitre, a Professor of Scripture at The Augustine Institute as he provides the commentary on all of the Mass readings for each weekend in Advent.

Advent begins Sunday, December 1.We have 2 sessions each week for your convenience: the Thursday morning preceding a Sunday Mass and Sunday morning. (Exception: during the week of Thanksgiving, the session will be held on Wednesday, November 27)

Cost: FREEAll materials are provided. No background experience needed to join the session. Come any time, registration is not necessary. Bring your teens!

ST. MATTHEW CHURCH GAHANNA, OHIO

AROUND THE DIOCESE

STATEMENT FROM BISHOP BRENNAN ON U.S. SUPREME COURT DACA CASE – “God our Father, who called Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini from Italy to serve the immigrants of America, by her example, teach us to have concern for the stranger, the sick, and all those in need, and by her prayers help us to see Christ in all the men and women we meet.” Today the Church remembers Mother Cabrini and her great work serving the immigrant population of the United States in the 19th Century. I am reminded of the many people in our Diocese who work tirelessly to serve and assist our immigrant population, especially those in most need of our help, in the same spirit – recognizing in them the very presence of Christ. The U.S. Supreme Court has chosen to take up the question of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA), instituted in 2012 by executive order, issuing temporary work permits to teenagers and young adults brought to the U.S. illegally as children. While the questions of law focus on the role and limits of executive authority, we, as people of faith who see the face of Christ in all we help, must remember the real and tragic implications at stake for nearly 700,000 people who were brought to our country at an early age and who grew up here in the United States. These individuals are already woven into the very fabric of our country – as students, employees, parents to their own children, even soldiers. No good purpose is served by turning away these “Dreamers,” destroying families and belatedly taking away that opportunity to continue to live the American Dream. This issue clearly demonstrates that both additional thought and compassion is necessary in our decision making. To this end, I stand firmly with my brother bishops in calling for comprehensive U.S. immigration reform, and with them, I implore all parties in Congress and the Executive Branch to find a timely, fair, and workable solution that above all respects the incomparable dignity and inherent worth of those who are impacted.
