Prelude: Elevation Alexandre Guilmant

Confession and Forgiveness (ELW p. 94)

The assembly stands. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

In the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

The assembly kneels. Silence is kept for reflection.

Most merciful God,

we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.

Amen.

In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Gathering Song  For All the SaintsELW 422

Greeting

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,

and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

And also with you.

Kyrie

Canticle of Praise

Prayer of the Day

Let us pray.

Almighty God, you have knit your people together in one communion in the mystical body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Grant us grace to follow your blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment, and to know the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who love you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

First Reading: Revelation 7:9-17

9After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. 10They cried out in a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!”11And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12singing, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”  13Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?” 14I said to him, “Sir, you are the one that knows.” Then he said to me, “These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15For this reason they are before the throne of God,  and worship him day and night within his temple,  and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. 16They will hunger no more, and thirst no more;  the sun will not strike them,  nor any scorching heat; 17for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd,  and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Second Reading: 1 John 3:1-3

1See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. 3And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation

Gospel: Matthew 5:1-12

The holy gospel according to Matthew.

Glory to you, O Lord.

1When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:  3“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  4“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.  5“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.  6“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.  7“Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.  8“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.  9“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.  10“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  11“Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”:

The gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

Hymn of the Day:Shall We Gather at the River ELW 423

All Saints Day Litany

We remember the great ancestors of our faith,

from Abraham and Sarah, to Paul and Phoebe:Ancestors of the faith, we remember you.

We remember the prophets and priests,

the ministers and teachers who have taught us the way of God:Teachers of the faith, we remember you.

We remember our grandparents and parents, aunts and uncles,

those who have gone before us in our lifetime:Family of our faith, we remember you.

We lift up the memories of children and grandchildren,

brothers and sisters, husbands and wives and parents

whose lives ended too soon:Those close in our heart, we remember you.

We lift up to You, O God,

the names of those we have lost in this past year from our lives,

knowing that they are with Your heart forever.

As we read these names, we will pause after every name

to remember, pray, and give thanks for their life.

We celebrate the lives of those we have named, O God,

and lift up many more names in our hearts.

Family of God, we remember you, and we honor you.

We know you are with us in the spirit of worship,

and you will not be forgotten.

We give thanks, O God,

for all who have gone on to join with You beyond this life.

We trust in the hope of resurrection and the promise of new life in Christ,

and know that in our grief and celebration, O God,

You are with us through it all, and we are not left alone.

In the name of Christ, in whom love lives forever, we pray.Amen.

Prayers of Intercession

Longing for Christ’s reign to come among us, we pray for the outpouring of God’s power on the church, the world, and all in need.

After each petition the following response is given:

Hear us, O God.

Your mercy is great.

Receive our prayers in the name of Jesus Christ our Savior, until that day when you gather all creation around your throne where you will reign forever and ever.

Amen.

Peace

The peace of Christ be with you always.

And also with you.

Offertory Anthem: Chorale Prelude on Lead, Kindly LightArr. Robert Hebble

An offering is gathered for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need.

Offering Prayer

Let us pray.

God of life,

you give us these gifts of the earth, these resources of our life and our labor. Take them, offered in great thanksgiving, and use them to set a table that will heal the whole creation; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Light. Amen.

Great Thanksgiving

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places…. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

Holy God, our Maker, Redeemer, and Healer, in the harmonious world of your creation, the plants and animals, the seas and stars were whole and well in your praise.

When sin had scarred the world, you sent your Son to heal our ills and to form us again into one.

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Remembering, therefore, his acts of healing, his body given up, and his victory over death, we await that day when all the peoples of the earth will come to the river to enjoy the tree of life.

Send your Spirit upon us and this meal: as grains scattered on the hillside become one bread, so let your Church be gathered from the ends of the earth, that all may be fed with the Bread of life, your Son.

Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. Amen

Lord’s Prayer

Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us.

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,

forever and ever. Amen.

Thanks be to God.

Music Notes

Prelude: Alexandre Guilmant is one of the most well known composers in the organ repertoire. He was greatly inspired by early church chant music, a theme one can hear constantly throughout his works. Today’s prelude is a calm meditation composed for the time during communion. Guilmant writes many harmonic suspensions, creating powerful moments of tension and resolution. The beautiful strings and flutes of the organ will combine to create a full blanket of soft and prayerful moments. Alexandre Guilmant served la Trinité church in Paris for 30 years.

Anthem: Robert Hebble is a modern American composer who spent his career writing music mostly for the church. He studied composition and organ performance around the world, most notably with renowned French composer Nadia Boulanger, and received countless awards for his work. Music Associate for the Riverside Church in New York City, Hebble was also a virtuoso pianist. Today’s work is one of his own personal compositions, based on a timeless chorale.

Fun fact: your organist is a personal friend of Mr. Hebble and has stayed as a guest in his southern Florida home when they played a concert together. I had a chance to discuss Robert Hebble’s composition style and musical history with him just before he passed away last year.
