WORSHIP Ministry – 2010 Annual Report

Ushers – To provide usher support for all Good Shepherd services when required. Support includes seating, greeting and assisting members of the congregation as needed before, during and immediately after the service. The 2010 highlights included participation with youth ushers in the interactive service; extensive usher participation in all of the Easter and Christmas services; participation in the Bishop’s annual visit; and the publication of a revised usher manual. As older ushers retire and move away, we need to maintain a constant flow of new and younger ushers into our ranks. Key leaders involved were: 9 AM service - Pete Jouannet; 11:15 AM service - Ray Blanford; 7:45 AM service – Dick Nugent. Contact Person: Ed Post – 703-978-1190 - [email protected]

Acolytes – The Good Shepherd acolytes faithfully serve each week, assisting the clergy at the altar for the three Sunday services. Additionally, they assist at weddings, funerals, and the monthly interactive services. Jim Weber continues as the adult leader, and is always seeking new acolytes, and adult assistance. Training is provided to all new acolytes. Contact Person: Jim Weber–241-1688, c/o [email protected]

Music Program – The music program at Good Shepherd provides organ, choral and instrumental music at Sunday services and other major services throughout the church year. The ensembles include six choirs, two bell groups, brass ensemble, and Paschal Jam, as well as individual instrumentalists. 2011 Accomplishments: 1. The Schlueter Organ Company continues to work to build a new organ console, restructure

the pipe chamber, and add to and revoice the pipes to give our organ a new sound. The existing organ console and the pipes have been removed and replaced with a “loaner” organ during this process.

2. During the interim period from January 1, 2011, to January 1, 2012, the music program at Good Shepherd continued under the direction of interim music director, Carleen Dixon Webb. An interim music committee and part-time musicians provided needed support. Efforts to recruit new members for all choirs and music programs were successful.

3. A schedule of music coverage for all services was instituted by the interim music director which resulted in more participation by the Junior Choir and Lightshine at the 9:00 services. Better coordination with bells and brass coverage at services also occurred as a result of this schedule.

4. The four choirs under the direction of the interim minister of music performed Rutter’s Mass of the Children on Sunday, June 12 for the first Sunday of Pentecost. The performance was professionally recorded and profits from the CD sales were donated to House of Hope and El Hogar.

5. Carleen Dixon Webb was hired as the Minister of Music and began full time work on January 1, 2012.

2012 Goals 1. Church of the Good Shepherd will enroll in the Royal School of Music (RSCM) program in

order to ensure a well rounded and high level music education program for youth. RSCM membership will potentially attract families who are looking for an internationally recognized church music education for their children.

2. The minister of music plans to establish a concert series for the 2012-2013 season. The first concert will be a dedicatory organ concert featuring world-renowned organist, J. Reilly Lewis. This series will be self-sustaining through fundraising and ticket sales.

3. An organization will be established called Friends of Music to help support the costs of the concert series through donations and fundraising activities.

4. The minister of music will continue to improve the quality and music repertoire of the choirs. 5. The minister of music will schedule regular music staff meetings as a way to encourage

coordination and communication with all aspects of the music ministry of Good Shepherd. Altar Guild – Altar Guild members prepare and clear the altar for all regular and special services including baptisms, weddings, and funerals. While Altar Guild members care for and clean the sanctuary, the linens, silver, and brass, they are not “housekeepers”, but rather Christians serving the Lord and the parish. Members serve on one of five rotating teams and can be found in the sanctuary and sacristy every Saturday and Sunday morning. 2011 Accomplishments: 1. All the memorial kneelers were cleaned and refurbished and the

padding was replaced. Funding was raised through individual and group donations. 2. Three new Altar Guild members were added to our teams.

2012 Goals: 1. Recruit new members for Altar Guild; 2. Regular Altar Guild Members – serve on an existing

team once every five weeks; 3. Substitutes – trained members willing to fill in when a regular team

member can not serve; 4. Special Altar Guild Members – trained members willing to serve at times of special need (e.g., Easter, Christmas, summer Sundays, Interactive Services); 5. Clean, refurbish, and replace the padding in the Bishop’s Chair pad and the pads on other Altar Chairs.

Lay Eucharistic Ministers (LEM) – The purpose of Lay Eucharistic Ministers is to assist with the administration Holy Eucharist during church services; take Holy Eucharist to those in the hospital or who are unable to attend church services. We are fully staffed for 9:00 AM service. We desperately need more LEMS for the 7:45 and 11:15 services (4-6 more per service) and more LEMS and musicians who are willing to serve at Leewood. Contact: Barbara Hoffman 703-425-9236, [email protected] Flower Guild – The Flower Guild had a busy year preparing arrangements for weekly services, special events, weddings and funerals. All arrangements were prepared in good time. In November, the Guild successfully sold Thanksgiving arrangements to raise funds. All other support for the Guild in 2010 came from donations. The Guild currently has 37 members, divided into 5 teams. In 2011, the Guild will be led by a group of 6 co-captains representing these teams. Contact: Jennifer Burns 703 503-5756, [email protected] Wedding Coordinators – The Wedding Coordinators fall under Worship as we participate in a Worship Service – The Celebration and Blessing of a Marriage. The purpose of the Wedding Coordinators is to assist the Priest in the logistics of a wedding ceremony. Coordinators assist at the rehearsal in getting participants in the correct place at the correct time, among other things. At the ceremony, the Coordinator helps keep the flow of traffic moving so that the bride can make her way down the aisle as close to the appointed hour as possible. It is really amazing how many little things come up the day of a wedding, no matter how much advance planning, but that only adds to the specialness of each event! This is a ministry that allows for fun as well as fellowship and we always work as a team of at least two. There were very few weddings at The Church of the Good Shepherd in 2011 and each wedding was different and special. I especially thank Jennifer Addington, Kate Kroehler and Arline Easley for their invaluable assistance. Each Coordinator is very special and her dedication is deeply appreciated. Janet Bouchard – 425-8245, [email protected] Altar Flowers – The flower fund pays for all flowers and other supplies needed for the floral arrangements on the main altar and the children’s altar. The flower fund is not a budgeted item and is funded entirely by the generosity of the parishioners. The sign up sheets are on a bulletin board in the Narthex. Suggested contributions are $20.00 for the main altar and $16.00 for the children’s altar. Make checks payable Church of the Good Shepherd Flower fund. In 2012 the LEV’s will continue to do what we have been doing. There are two people on the waiting list to become LEVs.
