Martin Luther’s Seal, or Coat of Arms
While a professor at Wittenberg, Luther designed this seal to be an expression of his
theology. A black cross on a red heart represents saving faith in Christ crucified. The
heart rests on a white rose, a sign of the peace that we have in Christ. The field of blue signifies
that the joy and hope we have now is the beginning of heavenly joy. A gold ring surrounds the symbol, a reminder that the peace and joy
of heaven will never end.

Gary Andersen, Lead Pastor “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— not the result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are what he has
made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.”
(Ephesians 2:8-10)
The Word Did Everything
Here it is! The 500th anniversary of the Reformation is being observed throughout the world during October. On October 31, 1517, a young monk named Martin Luther posted his 95 theses by nailing them to the door of Wittenberg’s Castle Church, which served as sort of a town bulletin board. The theses were statements for debate which critiqued and called into question the church practice of the time of selling indulgences, which believers were taught would buy forgiveness for their sins or for their deceased relatives in purgatory. Luther argued that repentant believers do receive forgiveness that was purchased, though not with silver or gold, “but with the precious blood of Christ” (1 Peter 1:19).
What lay behind Luther’s passion for reform of the church was his study of the Bible. The Holy Spirit at work in the Word led Luther to understand that “the righteousness of God” is not any righteousness people can put forth, but that it is God’s gift to sinners by grace alone through faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus took all of our sins, our unrighteousness, upon himself on the cross and in exchange gave us his righteousness, or holiness. With that understanding, Luther felt that he had been born again and had walked through the open gates of paradise. He said this new understanding, which sparked the Reformation, was not his doing, but that God’s Word did everything.
It is nothing less than this that we are celebrating and lifting up this fall at American Lutheran. This gift is our legacy and also our inspiration for the future as we lift up the power of God’s Word which is always reforming Christ’s Church and also individual believers. For it is by grace—and grace alone—that we are saved and set free to do God’s good works as a way of life. We learn of this truth through God’s Word, the Bible, which reveals to us God’s living Word, Jesus Christ. The Word does indeed to everything!
Blessings in Christ crucified and risen,
Pastor Gary

Next Lutheran Women Board Meeting Monday, November 13 at 6:30 in the Heritage Room
Thankoffering Sunday The history of “thankofferings” is thought to have begun as early as the 1800’s when it seemed there was not enough money to carry out the work of the church. The women would take action by setting aside offerings at home throughout the year, in thanksgiving for blessings received. Then, as today, the women would gather and join their offerings together to support ministry of many kinds. It has been the commitment of the Women of the ELCA to carry on this important tradition of giving in gratitude for our many blessings. As was true back then, when we join together we can do more than we could ever do apart!
Please join us for our Thankoffering Sunday worship on October 1st at 8:00 and 10:15.
Our special speaker is Sarah Stenson, Associate Director of The Luther House of Study in Sioux Falls.
Plan to bring your Thankofferings using the special envelopes at the Information Center in the Narthex.
Let us all give THANKS for the many blessings God has bestowed on us!
Bibles Presented On Sunday, September 24th, Bibles were presented to our 2nd graders during worship. Putting Bibles in the hands of our
youth continues to be a priority of Lutheran Women.

Martin & Katarina (Katy) Luther to Visit American Lutheran on Sunday, October 8
Johan and Sonja Hinderlie have portrayed the roles of 16th century reformer Martin Luther and his wife Katarina since 1979. They present the testimony of these amazing people in full costume with the flavor of the Reformation time in Germany
The Hinderlies proclaim the gospel of the forgiveness of sins in Jesus Christ through these presentations while presenting interesting anecdotes on the life and times of this unusual couple. Their stories reveal the theological focus of Luther’s teaching: sola scriptura, sola gratia, and sola fide (word alone, grace alone, and faith alone). Katy also tells of her escape from the Nimbschen convent, life with Martin and coping with suffering and death in her family.
Worshipers at both services on Sunday, October 8, will hear:
• Martin present on the 95 Theses and the Diet of Worms.
• Katy tell about her life and conversion in a convent as well as her escape.
• Martin & Katy speak about their wedding.
• Martin tell the story of his conversion.
Between services during the adult forum the duo will do a drama about life in the home of Martin & Katy Luther. They will also have a part at the Scandinavian Smorgasbord in the afternoon, commemorating the Reformation’s spread into Scandinavian countries.
Since their retirement, the Hinderlies live in Minnesota where Johan helps with recovery ministry in two churches. Sonja is a nanny to grandchildren. Together they led Mount Carmel Ministries in Alexandria from 1984 to 2012. 3

Sometimes the path is easy and clear cut, sometimes the clues may be a little challenging. But looking to the signs that Christ gives us helps us to grow and to conquer!
Confirmation Banquet
A special evening is planned for our confirmands, with their parents and mentors, on October 22nd at 6 pm. This is a wonderful evening to lift up the confirmands in celebration of the past 5 years as they grew deeper in

From the blog of our missionary, Rev. Dr. Elisabeth Johnson
Musings of an ELCA missionary in Cameroon Dear friends and sponsors,
Greetings from Cameroon! 2017 has been a very eventful year in my personal life! On January 30, I got married to Eric Toudze, a Cameroonian man whom I have known for almost five years. We first met in Ngaoundéré, where I studied French my first year in Cameroon, but Eric has been living and working in Yaoundé (the capital of Cameroon, about 680 km from Meiganga, where I live now). A civil marriage ceremony is required to legalize a marriage
in Cameroon, so we did that in January 2017 and are planning a church blessing ceremony in January 2018.
But wait… there’s more! Eric has a lovely, smart 14-year-old daughter named Schekina, whom I am legally adopting, and Eric and I are also adopting two little boys! Their names are David and Etienne. They are both orphans but not related to each other. Both were born in similar sad circumstances : in both cases, the mother died shortly after giving birth, and no father or other family member came to claim the baby, so they have been in foster care ever since. Eric knows the social worker assigned to their cases, and he has been visiting them both since they were babies. They are both two years old now.
The adoption is already complete on the Cameroonian side. Eric and the boys are still in Yaoundé for the moment. Schekina is in Yaoundé also, where she is attending an English-speaking boarding school. Meanwhile, I am in Meiganga. Eric expects to be transferred soon by the company for whom he works to Ngaoundéré (160 km/100 miles from Meiganga), so that we will be much closer together and at least able to spend weekends together. It is not an ideal situation, but it is the best we can do for now.
Forgive me for the long discourse on my personal life, but I thought it important to share these life-changing events with you all! Now for more work-related news…
The 2016-2017 academic year finished well. Thirty students graduated from the special program to train evangelists as pastors at the Bible school at Meng (250 km west of Meiganga). Here in Meiganga, nine students graduated with the “licence” degree (equivalent to a bachelor’s degree), and one student with a master’s degree. Four of these students were already ordained pastors who returned to the Institute for further study and now return to their ministries. The rest of the graduates have started two years of internship, which is required before being approved for ordination.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Cameroon held its bi-annual “Synode Général” (churchwide assembly) in late June in Poli, which is in the northwest region of Cameroon. Bishop Ruben Ngozo was elected to a second four-year term as national bishop, and Pastor Adolph Tellesam to a second term as assistant to the national bishop.
My colleague Anne Langdji (ELCA Global Mission regional representative for West/Central Africa and Madagascar) and I attended the synod only for a day because of security concerns in the region. Even though the time was short, we were able to meet with the women pastors in the EELC. They are planning a spiritual retreat for women pastors, with generous aid from the Manitoba/Northern Ontario Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. It has only been five years now since the first women were ordained in the EELC, and like all pioneers, they face many challenges. So we are looking forward to a time of mutual encouragement at the retreat in January 2018.
On July 30, Rachel Asta (a recent student at the Institute), was ordained as a pastor in the EELC, the eleventh woman to be ordained. I had the honor and joy of participating in that ordination service.
We are now preparing for a new academic year at the Lutheran Institute of Theology, which will begin October 2. It is always good to see returning students again and get to know the new students. I look forward to another year of teaching, learning, and enriching conversation with students and colleagues!
I am so very grateful for your faithful support of this work and for your prayers. At this time of transition, I would like to ask you to pray especially for my new family, for the safe return of students to the Institute, and for a faithful and fruitful academic year.
God’s richest blessings to you all!
+ Grace and peace +

National Walk and Bike Day
October 4, 2017
Walking is a great form of exercise because it causes less stress on our joints. This October 4th, we encourage school-age children to walk or bike to school. Walking or biking with a group of their peers is fun for them, but at the same
time, it raises awareness of the benefits of walking or biking.
Here are some walking safety tips:
1. Walk facing traffic on the side of the road, if there isn’t a sidewalk to walk on.
2. Cross at the intersections only, don’t be tempted to jay-walk because it’s closer. It can be very dangerous to cross a street where there isn’t an intersection. Always look both ways, and then again before crossing the street.
3. Walk single file when on a road or street.
4. Be aware of other walkers, runners, bikers. Listen for them and move over to allow them to pass.
5. Be visible. Wear bright colors in the daytime, and reflective clothing at night. (It can be so dangerous when you wear dark clothing at night, drivers cannot see a person in dark clothing well).
6. Keep the volume of your headphones, earbuds down so you can hear the traffic and others around you.
7. Stay off the mobile devices as this ‘distracts’ you from what’s going on around you.
8. Be aware of ‘Stranger Danger.’ Walk with a group of people, in a busy area; and don’t talk to strangers.
We want to instill in our children to walk or bike more, but they need to also know how to be safe while walking or biking.
1 John 2:5-6 says, “But whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says
he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.”
Hurricane Disaster Response – Large areas of Texas, Florida, other southeastern states and the
Caribbean have been devastated recently by hurricanes. Besides significant property damage, tens of thousands of people have been displaced and may be housed in shelters for an extended period of time. Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR) is actively present in these areas, collaborating with community leaders and officials to initiate the proper responses, particularly long-term recovery efforts. LDR has a strong history of working with disasters of every kind. The road to recovery will be long, and Lutheran Disaster Response will be there to accompany those affected through every phase. You are invited to join in standing by our neighbors by providing help and hope. Your gift will be used entirely (100%) where needed most. Together, we can help provide immediate and long-lasting support. Checks can be made out to “American Lutheran Church” with “LDR hurricane response” noted on the memo line. Please place in the offering plate or return to the church office.
Sylvia Andersen, Worship & Music Coordinator
What to expect… There is a popular series of books for expectant
and new parents titled, “What to expect when…”
We have been planning and organizing as staff for this special event…you may have heard about it…the Lutheran Reformation happened 500 years ago and we feel the need to celebrate that event! Here’s what you can expect over the next weeks:
In the 8:00 worship services, we will be singing hymns that Luther wrote (either text or music or both). The bulletin will have information about the history of these hymns each week.
We will also be examining the Small Catechism by using parts of it within our worship time at both services.
Reformation was not a one-time occurrence – it is on-going even today. So, in the 8:00 service we are beginning this fall with the familiar setting that was in the green hymnals as Setting Two and is in our red books, Setting Four. Gradually, we will introduce a new setting – one portion at a time – so that by Advent, we have another Liturgy Setting to use as we move forward as 21st Century Lutherans. Meanwhile, the 10:15 service will also be learning something new, a contemporary hymn titled “By Faith”. The text for this hymn is based on the 11th chapter of Hebrews. This continues Luther’s hymn writing philosophy that the church’s hymns be another avenue to learn and share God’s Word and contains the very “Lutheran” phrase: “we’ll walk by faith and not by sight”.
PRIMEIME SENIORS Join us on Thursday, October 26 at 2:00 p.m. in
Fellowship Hall. A program, to be announced soon, will be accompanied by refreshments. All are welcome!
