IntroductionIn this worship guide you will find a number of different services you could use throughout the 24 hours of the Diocesan Day of Prayer. Beginning with midday Communion on Friday 17 November and ending with the programme for the event in Faversham on Saturday 18 November, this selection is designed for you to use in whatever way suits your plans for the day. Be creative - hold a service somewhere unusual or encourage people to pray in ways they haven’t before. If you’re praying on your own you can still use these - why not read the plain text in your head and the bold bits out loud? If you are organising a satellite event and would like to have a version you can edit please contact Holly Adams on [email protected].

In the name of the Father,
and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.

Grace, mercy and peace
from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ
be with you
and also with you
Almighty God,
to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known,
and from whom no secrets are hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name;
through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

O eternal Light,
who through the working of the Holy Spirit
received from the Virgin our human nature:
renew us in your love.
O crucified Redeemer,
by the eternal Spirit you offered yourself to the Father for us:
renew us in your love.
You breathed on the apostles the Spirit of your love,
that sinners might come to know the mercy of God:
renew us in your love.
You are seated at the right hand of the Father,
from whom we receive the gifts of the Spirit:
renew us in your love.
Through the power of the Holy Spirit
you wash away our sins in the waters of baptism
and open our hearts to the guiding hand of the Father:
renew us in your love.
Time of silent prayer in preparation for confession.
Jesus says, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.’
So let us turn away from sin and turn to Christ, confessing our sins
in penitence and faith.
The kingdom is yours,
but we turn away from your just rule:
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

The power is yours,
but we trust in our own power and strength:
Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
The glory is yours,
but we fall short of the glory of God:
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Absolution
Collect from Pentecost Sunday:Holy Spirit, sent by the Father,
ignite in us your holy fire;
strengthen your children with the gift of faith,
revive your Church with the breath of love,
and renew the face of the earth,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
New Testament Reading: Romans 12:1-8
Gospel Reading: Matthew 9:9-17
Intercessions:Gracious God,
we pray for peace, justice and reconciliation throughout the world.
We pray for the honouring of human rights,

Merciful Father,
Accept these prayers
for the sake of your Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.
The Peace:To crown all things there must be love,
to bind all together and complete the whole.
Let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts.
The peace of God be always with you.
And also with you.
Let us offer one another a sign of peace.
Preparation of the Gifts
Eucharistic Prayer:The Lord is here.
His Spirit is with us.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give thanks and praise.
It is right to praise you, Father, Lord of all creation;
in your love you made us for yourself.
When we turned away
you did not reject us,
but came to meet us in your Son.
You embraced us as your children
and welcomed us to sit and eat with you.

In Christ you shared our life
that we might live in him and he in us.
He opened his arms of love upon the cross
and made for all the perfect sacrifice for sin.
On the night he was betrayed,
at supper with his friends
he took bread, and gave you thanks;
he broke it and gave it to them, saying:
Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;
do this in remembrance of me.
Father, we do this in remembrance of him:
his body is the bread of life.
At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine,
he gave you thanks, and said:
Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins;
do this in remembrance of me.
Father,we do this in remembrance of him:
his blood is shed for all.
As we proclaim his death and celebrate his rising in glory,
send your Holy Spirit that this bread and this wine
may be to us the body and blood of your dear Son.
As we eat and drink these holy gifts
make us one in Christ, our risen Lord.
With your whole Church throughout the world
we offer you this sacrifice of praise
and lift our voice to join the eternal song of heaven:

Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
The Lord’s Prayer:Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.
We break this bread
to share in the body of Christ.
Though we are many, we are one body,
because we all share in one bread.
Jesus, Lamb of God,
have mercy on us.
Jesus, bearer of our sins,
have mercy on us.
Jesus, redeemer of the world,
grant us peace.

and you bring together what is scattered
and mend what is broken.
Unite us with the scattered peoples of the earth
that we may be one family of your children.
Bind up all our wounds

that we may be renewed as disciples of Jesus Christ,
our Master and Saviour. Amen.
The Dismissal:May Christ’s holy, healing, enabling Spirit be with you

Evening Prayer: 17 NovemberO God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Your faithful servants bless you.
They make known the glory of your kingdom.
Blessed are you, Sovereign God,
our light and our salvation,
to you be glory and praise for ever.
Now, as darkness is falling
wash away our transgressions,
cleanse us by your refining fire
and make us temples of your Holy Spirit.
By the light of Christ,
dispel the darkness of our hearts
and make us ready to enter your kingdom,
where songs of praise for ever sound.
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Blessed be God for ever.
Song/hymn
That this evening may be holy, good and peaceful,
let us pray with one heart and mind.
Silence is kept.
As our evening prayer rises before you, O God,
so may your mercy come down upon us
to cleanse our hearts
and set us free to sing your praise
now and for ever.

From this day all generations will call me blessed;
the Almighty has done great things for me
and holy is his name.
He has mercy on those who fear him,
from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with his arm
and has scattered the proud in their conceit,
Casting down the mighty from their thrones
and lifting up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things
and sent the rich away empty.
He has come to the aid of his servant Israel,
to remember the promise of mercy,
The promise made to our ancestors,
to Abraham and his children for ever.
Luke 1:46-55
Glory to the Father and to the Son

Canticle: The Song of Christ’s Glory
At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow.
Christ Jesus was in the form of God,
but he did not cling to equality with God.
He emptied himself, taking the form of a servant,
and was born in our human likeness.
Being found in human form he humbled himself,
and became obedient unto death, even death
on a cross.
Therefore God has highly exalted him,
and bestowed on him the name above every name.
That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth;
And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ
is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
Philippians 2:5-11
Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.
At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow.

You, O Lord, are in the midst of us and we are called by your name; leave us not, O Lord our God.
Jeremiah 14:9
Be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary the devil is prowling round like a roaring lion, seeking for someone to devour. Resist him, strong in the faith.

Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
For you have redeemed me, Lord God of truth.
I commend my spirit.
Glory to the Father and to the Son

Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
Keep me as the apple of your eye.
Hide me under the shadow of your wings.

Midnight Service: 17 NovemberPrayer at Midnight of the Diocesan Day of Prayer…
O God our protector;
By whose mercy the world turns safely into darkness
And returns again to light:
Our unsolved problems, and our unfulfilled hopes;
For you alone are our sure defence.
Now we give You the night that is ahead of us.
Keep our bodies, minds and spirits in complete safety:
Hold us in the hollow of Your hand.
Reveal the night to be Yours,
O God of the northern lights!
The night helps us to see the light within each of us.
When we cannot see anything else, You are there.
Joel Mason
Leader: Let us pray.
Generous God, you gave us our voices,
no two the same,
no finer instruments with which to praise you.
All: For these we thank you, Lord.
Leader: You gave us words and music,
peculiar gifts,
with which to wound or wonder,
bore or bless, inspire or disable.
All: For these we thank you, Lord.

Leader: And in your Church you have gathered us.
In your community
of common folk and complainers,
prophets and puzzled people,
you have made a place for us.
All: For this we thank you, Lord.
Leader: So let what we say and do here,
what we ponder and decide here,
be real for us and honest to you,
and prepare us for the life of the world
in which you are also praised.
All: Amen.
Psalm 147:Reader: Sing praise to the Lord who is good,
sing to our God who is loving:
All: To God all praise is due.
Reader: The Lord builds up Jerusalem
and brings back Israel’s exiles;
Women: God heals the broken-hearted,
and binds up all their wounds.
Men: God fixes the number of the stars
and calls each one by its name.
Reader: The Lord is great and all-knowing;
God’s wisdom can never be measured.
Women: The Lord raises the lowly,
and humbles the wicked to the dust.

sing psalms to our God with the harp.

in those who trust in God’s love.
Here we pause to remember those
who helped us to come to faith,
by singing us songs or telling us stories,
by inviting us in when we felt distant,
by praying for us without being asked.
We name them now.

we hold to his word and share his plea:
All: Your kingdom come, your will be done.
Leader: Where nations budget for war,
while Christ says, ‘Put up your sword’:

All: Your kingdom come, your will be done.
Leader: Where countries waste food and covet fashion,
while Christ says, ‘I was hungry…I was thirsty…’;
All: Your kingdom come, your will be done.
Leader: Where powerful governments
claim their policies are heaven blessed,
while scripture states
that God helps the powerless:
All: Your kingdom come, your will be done.
Leader: Where Christians seek the kingdom
in the shape of their own church,
as if Christ had come to build
and not break barriers:
All: Your kingdom come, your will be done.
Leader: Where women who speak up for their dignity
are treated with scorn and contempt:
All: Your kingdom come, your will be done.
Leader: Where men try hard to be tough,
Because they’re afraid to be tender:
All: Your kingdom come, your will be done.
Leader: Where we, obsessed with being adult,
forget to become like children:
All: Your kingdom come, your will be done.
Leader: Where our prayers falter,
Our faith weakens,
Our light grows dim:
All: Your kingdom come, your will be done.

Leader: Where Jesus Christ calls us:
All: Your kingdom come, your will be done.
Leader: Lord God,
you have declared that your kingdom is among us.
Open our ears to hear it,
our hands to serve it,
our hearts to hold it.
This we pray in Jesus’ name.
All: Amen.

Closing responses:(All standing.)
Leader: For all that God can do within us,
for all that God can do without us,
All: Thanks be to God.
Leader: For all in whom Christ lived before us
for all in whom Christ lives beside us,
All: Thanks be to God.
Leader: For all the Spirit wants to bring us,
for where the Spirit wants to send us,
All: Thanks be to God.
Leader: Listen,
Christ has promised to be with us
in the world as in our worship.
All: Amen.
We got to serve him.

ProgrammeProgramme template for intergenerational gathering from 10:30am-1:30pm.
This gathering is divided into five sections that follow a pattern of worship that draws us together with God. This is the programme being used in Faversham and is intended to be used at satellite events as it is helpful.
Choose a time scale that works for you, for your worship styles and make it a prayerful witness to the renewing of the Holy Spirit. All the resources used in the programme below are or will be available here: www.canterburydiocese.org/dayofprayer
Time activities10:00 Hospitality and drink refreshments bearing in mind those fasting from
food.10:30 ENTER - Gathering for worship.
• Hospitality starts outside the door and continues until everyone who arrives is seated.
• Create a ‘starter’- welcoming exercises to gather everyone together.• Listen to a video where Bishop Trevor and others share why they are
praying for renewal. The videos will be available for satellite events to use and will be downloadable from 30 October.
10:45 ENCOUNTER - meeting God through worship and listening to God through scripture.
• Music led hymns and worship songs.• Bishop Trevor’s address (five minutes) - available on video to
download from 30 October.• ‘Wondering with the Word’- an exploration of Acts 10, available from 9
October.• Introduction to the hour of prayer - a script for this will be available
from 23 October.11:30 EXPLORE - the shared diocesan hour of prayer, our interactive exploring
of God together.• People are free to explore the intergenerational prayer stations or stay
seated and pray where they are sitting. A guide to setting up the 12 prayer stations will be available from 23 October - use as many of them as you like.
• If remaining seated, people may want to follow the resource called the ‘Diocesan Shared Hour of Prayer Guide’ (available from 23 October).
• ‘Express’ - share in small groups our responses to the hour of exploring. Ask each other questions like: How was this time of prayer for you? Is there anything you want to share? How have we connected with God’s desire for renewal within us? Move from these groups into lunch.

• Encourage others to share with one another what they sensed God was communicating to them or to us all.

• Reflect together on the experience of the past day and gathering - ask what was most important about what we heard and needs to be followed through.
• Think about what messages about prayer and renewal we wish to share in church tomorrow.
• Pray for the new diocesan strategy missional prayer network and the ongoing prayer of the church for renewal. Information will be available.
