Prayer Concerns
We had many women participating in United
Methodist Women Sunday. Two “kitchen cart
loads” of hygiene supplies were donated by our
church family to help the victims of Human
Trafficking. Our speaker, Jenny Sorey, from
Hub of HOPE, will be returning to Goddard to
conduct a training session on the subject of
Human Trafficking. We will invite other
United Methodist Churches in our area to
attend. We are currently working on a date for
this training session.
The UM Women are working with the Mission
Team to collect and deliver household items to the
Cookson Hills Mission on Tuesday, May 9. Items
may be dropped off at the church Monday, May 1
through Monday, May 8 from 8:30 am to 4 pm.
Elizabeth Eubanks
Submitted by: Elizabeth Eubanks Our Food Pantry will be a participant in the US Postal
Carriers Food Drive on May 13. We will supply three
volunteers to help unload the canned goods from the mail
carriers’ vehicles and load them onto our trucks to bring the
canned goods back to our pantry. Our volunteers are
required to be at the Fianna Hills Post Office at 12:30 pm.
Volunteers will be needed to unload our trucks at the
church.
We have 26 people who currently serve as volunteers in our
Food Pantry. We need and are looking for two additional
people to serve to pick up the food and deliver to the church.
We are looking for two additional people to help stock our
pantry on Tuesdays. This will help us to cover vacations and
for our current team to alternate times. During of the month
of April we served 581 people. During the last week of the
same month we served 84 households. We are thankful for
your monetary and prayer support.

Health Ministry
May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month Submitted by: Frankie Allred
Regular physical activity is good for everyone’s health, and people of all ages and body types can be physically active. Did you know that regular physical activity increases your chances of living a longer healthier life? It also reduces your risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, and some types of cancer. Yet in Arkansas only 41.2% adults achieved the equivalent of at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity per week and 27.5% of adolescents were physically active at least 60 minutes per day on all 7 days in the past week. (Centers for Disease Control and Preven-tion. Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Data, Trends and Maps website. Accessed April 17, 2017.) That means that over half the population in Arkansas don’t get the recommended amount of physical activity.
Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recom-mend that adults: Aim for 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week. Moderate activity includes things like walking fast, dancing, swimming, and raking leaves. Do muscle-strengthening activities – like lifting weights or us-ing exercise bands – at least 2 days a week. To maintain a basic level of health, children and young people aged 5 to 18 need to do: at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day – this should range from moderate activity, such as cycling and playground activities, to vigorous activity, such as running and tennis on three days a week, these activities should involve exercises for strong muscles, such as push-ups, and exercises for strong bones, such as jumping and running Children and young people should reduce the time they spend sitting watching TV, playing computer games and travelling by car when they could walk or cycle instead.
Older adults aged 65 or older, who are generally fit and have no health conditions that limit their mobility, should try to be active daily and should do a mix of moderate and vigorous aerobic activity every week. For example, two 30-minute runs, plus 30 minutes of fast walking, equates to 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity, and strength exercises on two or more days a week that work all the ma-jor muscles (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms). A rule of thumb is that one minute of vigorous activity provides the same health benefits as two minutes of moderate activity.
You should also try to break up long periods of sit-ting with light activity, as sedentary behavior is now considered an independent risk factor for ill health, no matter how much exercise you do.
In honor of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, the health ministry of Goddard United Methodist Church challenges all adults to get 30 minutes of physical activity every day.
Physical activity is for everyone. No matter what shape we are in, we can find activities that work for us. Together, we can rise to the challenge and get more active during the month of May!
