Dear Friends, Last week, we began our special parish lenten mission. Fr. John Ranieri gave a beautiful talk at the Masses on the fundamental choice we all face: either we pursue happiness by how we compare with others on the scales of power, status, and wealth or by living with a deepening awareness, as Jesus did, that we are unconditionally beloved of God. Unfortunately, most of us believe that we have to perform well to be thought of as well. We’re judged by others, and we judge ourselves, by performances. In God’s view, however, we can never be dismissed by our actions, especially by our failures. Jesus revealed that even the worst thing that we can do doesn’t negate us in his Father’s eyes. We’re created in his image and likeness so he forgave his murderers. From the get -go, we’re just too important to him! This changes how we look at one another. Since we’re all precious before we can do anything to prove our worth, then, like Jesus, we can reveal the face of God more and more fully by being the keepers of our sisters and brothers and of the world of which we’re a part. Cain’s invidious comparison with Able was barking up the wrong tree. These are nice sounding words, but why should we live Jesus’ way of life in the world of 2018? Recently, there have been some interesting reflections on that. They can give us a basis for joining our actions with Christ by doing today what he is now doing. One of the people helping us to see this is Beatrice Bruteau. While she died a few years ago, she learned to understand creation as ongoing since the Big Bang, some 14 billion years or so ago. In her view, the universe has been evolving in a self-creating way as an ongoing expression of God’s creative love. That love is like that of a parent, a coach, or a teacher. Those under their care have to learn through their own fits and starts, failures and successes. Creation has evolved under God’s care in a similar way. Here’s how she put it: I have called this creative act God’s ecstasy. Ecstasy means standing outside oneself. It is kin to the kenosis of Philippians 2:6being God is not a thing to be clung to, so God empties Godself, taking the form of limitation in finitude, and is born as a universe. It is the defining divine act: self-giving, being- bestowing...God is very present, precisely in all the dynamisms and patterns of the created order...God is not rendered absent by... the natural world, but...God is actual as the one who makes and the one who is incarnate in what is made by these very self-making activities. In spite of the tremendous diversity in creation, Bruteau sees an underlying, unifying, and caring presence: God’s creative Word. That Word, as St. John reminds us, took on flesh and blood as Christ. He is the unif ier that makes all things interrelated and interdependent. So, when we join our loving acts with the caring acts of Christ, we are working with him to be the stewards of his world. Our fulfillment is being about Christ’s creative activity on behalf of our sisters and brothers and of all there is. We’re so important that we’re partners with the Creator! Love, Fr. Joe

Dear Friends,

Last week, we began our special parish lenten mission.

From the get-go, we’re just too important to him!

Here’s how she put it:

I have called this creative act God’s ecstasy. Ecstasy means standing outside oneself. It is kin to the kenosis of Philippians 2:6—being God is not a thing to be clung to, so God empties Godself, taking the form of limitation in finitude, and is born as a universe. It is the defining divine act: self-giving, being-bestowing...God is very present, precisely in all the dynamisms and patterns of the created order...God is not rendered absent by... the natural world, but...God is actual as the one who makes and the one who is incarnate in what is made by these very self-making activities.

In spite of the tremendous diversity in creation, Bruteau sees an underlying, unifying, and caring presence: God’s creative Word. That Word, as St. John reminds us, took on flesh and blood as Christ. He is the unifier that makes all things interrelated and interdependent. So, when we join our loving acts with the caring acts of Christ, we are working with him to be the stewards of his world. Our fulfillment is being about Christ’s creative activity on behalf of our sisters and brothers and of all there is. We’re so important that we’re partners with the Creator!

Love,

Fr. Joe

2018 MEN’S CORNERSTONE What kind of man makes a Cornerstone? Husbands, single men, guardians, fathers, grandfathers, uncles, teachers, coaches, investment bankers, carpenters, lawyers, retirees, managers, doctors, police officers....In fact, when it comes right down to it, they are men just like you who want to deepen their faith and reflect on what really matters. The St Anne's Men's Cornerstone will take place on Friday April 28th and Saturday April 29th, 2018 (Friday evening to Saturday evening) in the church hall. For more information contact Guiseppe Barone 551-206-2502, John Hill 201-207-4607 or Ed Grzesiak 201-321-5144. REFLECTION Lent 2001 by Joyce Rupp

The cosmos dreams in me while I wait in stillness, ready to lean a little further into the heart of the Holy.

I, a little blip of life, a wisp of unassuming love, a quickly passing breeze, come once more into Lent.

No need to sign me with the black bleeding ash of palms, fried and baked. I know my humus place.

This Lent I will sail on the graced wings of desire, yearning to go deeper to the place where I am one in the One.

Oh, may I go there soon, in the same breath that takes me to the stars when the cosmos dreams in me.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION 2nd Sunday of Lent

“’Here I am!’ he answered.” (Genesis 22:11)

It is easy to say, “Here I am, Lord,” when we are kneeling in church. But how easy is it to say “Here I am Lord,” when a neighbor needs our help, when we are invited to join a parish ministry, or when we are asked to provide financial support? Often times we are called when it’s not convenient for us. Discipleship is not always easy, most of the time it will make us uncomfortable and vulnerable.

BTOR We will continue our weekly Gospel Study Sessions this

Thursday, March 1st from 1:00-2:00 pm in the Faith Center (lower level of the Rectory).

All are welcome; please feel free to invite a friend.

MILESTONE ANNIVERSARY MASSES There will be two special Masses celebrating milestone

years for married couples. The Archbishop will celebrate

the Mass for couples celebrating 50 or more years of

marriage on May 6, 2018.

On April 29, 2018 he will celebrate the Mass for couples

who are celebrating 5 and 25 years of marriage. All the

liturgies are at the Cathedral-Basilica and couples need

to be registered in order to receive certificates. Register

by calling Lynn at the Rectory at 201-791-1616.

Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the

Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we become ever

more truly the People of God. If you have any comments, please feel free to contact any of the following Pastoral Council

Representatives: Donna Stickna, Melissa Rovetto-Ruffner & Marianne Cummins .

Our Lenten mission continues at weekend Masses with guest speakers including:

March 3-4…Father Pat Sieber OFM

March 10-11…Dr. Mara Zukowski

March 17-18…Father Joe and Father Colin will help us tie it all together.

Observing Lent 2018

Next weekend: We will be extending a “Welcome Back” to Father Patrick Sieber OFM, known to many of our old-timers as Father Pat.

He came to St. Anne’s right after ordination and remained with us for nine years. During that time, we recognized his passion for social justice and for the poor, concerns that remain dominant in his priestly ministry. Since he left us, he has been engaged in parish work, has been part of the staff of the St. Francis Inn in Philadelphia, and has served as an overnight hospital chaplain. In his own words: “I have been blessed with people who have helped me to identify with the needs of the poor.”

Pass that on to us, Father Pat.

To further enrich the Lenten experience, we will continue a series of discussions on Wednesday evenings

February 28; March 7, 14, and 21 (Yes, we’ve added one.) on the general subject of discipleship.

Join Father Joe and fellow parishioners in the church from 7:30 to 8:45 pm

PART 7 -- WHAT CAN WE DO? (continued)

5. What’s the latest with electric cars?

Sales are still small overall, but they are rising fast. The cars draw power at night from the electric grid

and give off no pollution during the day as they move around town. They are inherently more efficient than

gasoline cars and would represent an advance even if the power were generated by burning coal, but they will be

far more important as the electric grid itself becomes greener through renewable power. The cars are improving

so fast that some countries are already talking about banning the sale of gasoline cars after 2030.

6. What are carbon taxes, carbon trading and carbon offsets’?

It’s just jargon for putting a price on pollution. The greenhouse gases being released by human activity

are often called “carbon emissions” for short. That is because two of the most important gases, carbon dioxide

and methane, contain carbon. (Some other pollutants are lumped into the same category, even if they do not

actually contain carbon.) When you hear about carbon taxes, carbon trading and so on, these are just

shorthand descriptions of methods to put a price on emissions, which economists say is one of the most

important steps society could take to limit them.

“A change in lifestyle could bring healthy pressure to bear on those who wield

political, economic and social power. This is what consumer movements

accomplish by boycotting certain products. They prove successful in changing the

way businesses operate, forcing them to consider their environmental footprint

and their patterns of production. When social pressure affects their earnings,

businesses clearly have to find ways to produce differently. This shows us the

great need for a sense of social responsibility on the part of consumers..”
