“From Harm to Home” International Rescue Committee

Michelle Villereal, Dallas IRC Office Volunteer and External Relations Coordinator

Wednesday, December 9 — 6:15 p.m. The International Rescue Committee is on the forefront of humanitarian responses around the world. The United States has a long tradition of offering refuge to those fleeing persecution and war. Upon arrival in the United States, refugees are helped by the IRC, an organization which provides immediate aid, including food and shelter, as well as assistance on the path to being permanent residents or citizens of the United States. Because of the increased conversations in the news about refugee resettlement the past few weeks, especially in Texas, the volume of Michelle’s work has increased tremendously. Our conversation with her will need to be by Skype. Please go to in the Blue Room immediately after supper, so we can begin our visit with her. Ornaments on the Missions Tree suggest items you can donate for a newly resettled refugee family’s home. (photo: IRC, Greece)

We’ll sing to people we love.

We’ll board the bus in the front of the church at 5:15; please be on time.

Welcome new member, Craig Nash We are delighted that Craig Nash joined Lake Shore on Sunday. After visiting Lake Shore many times through the years, Craig decided to “cast his lot” with our congregation. Craig grew up in Chandler, TX, a small town west of Tyler. Being formed in a rural, close-knit community instilled in him a feeling that camaraderie and the development of a few deep relationships is what the Kingdom of God most looks like. He is a “cradle Baptist-— Mission Friends, Lottie Moon, RA’s and “walking the aisle” were as much a part of his early vocabulary as anything he learned on Sesame Street. Craig is single, and is often amused at how much more other people think about that aspect of his life than he does. His family is in East Texas, and he spends a lot of time there taking care of his aging mother. He graduated from East Texas Baptist University with a degree in Theology. After that he spent several years as a “vocational vagabond,” working in college Residence Life, student ministry, education, politics and hotel management, before going to work at Barnes and Noble Booksellers. It was there, as well as at UBC (University

Baptist Church), where he fell in love with the Waco community and decided that this is the place for him. Now he works at the Texas Hunger Initiative. Craig loves to cook, read, stir up controversy on social media and sneak away to movies in the middle of the day. But over the past ten years the thing that has given him the most joy is writing. His favorite subject matters to write about are broad—Country Music, congregational life, spiritual reflections, grief, and rural life are just a few of the topics he covers on his blogs—www.txhighway31.com and clocktower74taketwo.blogspot.com. He has admired Lake Shore “from a distance” for many years through several close friends and is drawn to it by the out-of-the-ordinary dissonance between its traditional, Baptist polity and its contemplative and inclusive spirit. He looks forward to learning from its wealth of scholars, poets, and dreamers. He hopes to be able to use his gifts with words to give voice to our life together. We welcome Craig with our whole hearts. We will be richer because his fingerprints will touch Lake Shore’s ministries and his presence, our spirits.

Stewardship Update

We wanted to update you on the pledge campaign! This last week we received over $100,000 in new pledges! We’re now at 74 pledges for a total of $390,000, 83% of 2016 budget! We are feeling better but still have some to go! Thanks! —Kerry Irons

Prayers for . . . Deborah Harris will have surgery on Monday, December 14.

David Ryals, former Lake Shore member, will begin radiation and hormone therapy treatment in February.

Linda Malmberg, good friend of Deborah Harris, died of cancer last week. Deborah requests prayers for Linda’s husband, Virgil.

Linda Cook, good friend of Fred and Gerri Carey, had surgery yesterday in Gainesville, FL. She remains in the ICU. Prayers to Linda and her husband, Jim.

Betsy Ritz of Lincoln, Rhode Island, sent word this morning that her father, Carl Ritz, died peacefully Sunday morning. He was in a nursing care unit in Canandaigua, New York, where he moved a year and a half ago after a very full vocational life, much of it in social services with the YMCA. At the time of his move, Betsy sent Lake Shore many of her dad’s books on religion. Betsy, Rick, and their girls were at Lake Shore in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Our prayers are with them all.

Poinsettias for Advent

Missions Tree Only ten days ago, our Missions Tree was full of globes, representing projects Lake Shore members could do for our community and our world. Most have been taken, but a few still need a home. Please consider some of these that are left on the tree and we are committed to giving: a gift for a Friends for Life client — one of them has requested non-slip socks and another, a set of red pots and pans; several pair of gloves/mittens and caps for Central American children, traveling north to colder climates; hygiene kits for Mission Waco; new items to help furnish the homes of refugees settling in Dallas — rugs, welcome mats, towels, cleaning supplies, sets of twin sheets, lamps, silverware (for furniture, call the church to let us know).

Service of Light in the Darkness I know from my own experience that not every holiday season is cheery and bright. Some years bad things happen, dreams are lost, sorrows abound. Life gets lonely. I want to offer you the opportunity not to be alone with all that sadness. Please join us for the Service of Light in the Darkness (this Sunday, 3pm). We believe Advent belongs to those who are waiting for the light to reappear. Whether your need for light is small or huge, slight or desperate, you are most welcome. This service is our gift to you. You may want to consider inviting a friend who is hurting. Whether or not they attend Lake Shore, we would welcome them too. With love, Kyndall

End of Year Contributions December is the month where we determine whether we’ll end the year with a surplus or deficit. Prayerfully consider your contribution with this in mind. Remember that contributions must be postmarked by December 31 or hand-delivered to the church by Sunday, December 27 in order to be counted as a 2015 contribution. Thanks to all of you who give financially to help Lake Shore fulfill its mission to its members, staff, and community. *Please note the church office will be closed starting at noon on Christmas Eve through January 1. If you plan to hand-deliver a contribution during that time you must do so during Children’s Center hours on Monday, December 28 or Tuesday, December 29 (7:30a-5:30p).
