Gardeners everywhere are looking for earth-friendly ways to feed their vegetables and flowers. In fact, the demand for all-natural fertilizers and pest

control products has ballooned over the past decade. Marker researcher Freedonia Group has estimated 10 percent annual growth for the organic fertilizer market, twice the estimated growth for all lawn and garden goods.

One booming area within the organic fertilizer market is worm composting, or vermicomposting, which uses earthworms to create rich, natural fertilizer. Research has established that worm compost, when added as a soil amendment, increases soil fertility, improves plant nutrient uptake, enhances soil structure, and boosts soil’s water-holding capacity. It even helps to suppress soil pathogens in some cases.

One major producer of vermicompost is Worm Power, based in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. There, millions of earthworms produce Worm Power fertilizer in a controlled indoor setting. The worms convert composted dairy manure from a nearby dairy farm into professional-grade, certified organic fertilizer. The odorless, crumbly worm compost is loaded with beneficial microorganisms and is rich in both primary nutrients (NPK) and micronu-trients.

Worm Power recently partnered with Harris Seeds to make its products more readily available to garden center

retailers, offering consumer packages for resale and bulk cu-bic yards for use in greenhouse production. Its new rollout for

the home garden market includes shaker cans, 1-pound, 3-pound and 15-pound bags, as well as brew-it-yourself Worm Power Shower liquid fertilizer.

Worm Power’s process-controlled production envi-ronment is key to its success, according to Tomo Herlihy, president and co-founder of Worm Power. “This stuff is hard to make,” Herlihy said. Many worm composts are made from variable inputs and processed with inconsistent methods, resulting in variable nutrient and microbial composition. In contrast, Worm Power is created through a patented, process-controlled method that ensures a uniform end product. Moisture, temperature, aeration and feedstocks are strictly controlled.

Finished Worm Power fertilizer offers balanced, slow-release nutrients and abundant plant-essential microbes. The activity of these microbes makes nutrients more available to plants, helping them thrive, even in demanding conditions.

Penny Stankiewicz, a home gardener from Brooklyn, said she successfully used Worm Power in her condo garden, on everything from herbs and trees to shrubs and roses. She even used the rich worm compost to start a lawn from seed. After using Worm Power for the past three years, Stankiewicz said, “i am definitely a faithful fan.”

Emily, a home gardener, wrote, “A friend recom-mended Worm Power to me and gave me a sample to try. i put some on all my houseplants, even on the one

that looked really hopeless. My houseplants started thriving, and the hopeless one is now twice the original size.”

Alan nesbitt, a giant pumpkin grower from Elmira, n.Y., recently wrote, saying, “Backyard giant pumpkin growers are finding that by building a healthy soil, they can compete year after year with pumpkins grown in the same soil. Worm Power has helped keep my soil alive and healthy while supplying high nutrient content that helps feed the plants during the season.”

“It’s nature’s original fertilizer, straight from the worms,” Herlihy said.

“Consumer opinions indicate that the market for high-quality organic fertilizer is poised for growth,” said Solveig Hanson, organic product manager at Harris Seeds. “Purchas-ing trends show that home gardeners and landscapers want
