Born and raised in the oldest city of The Netherlands, I have always interacted with different cultures. I believe this to be the reason that the past and present of international relations have always appealed to me. This interest was the main cause of my involvement with the student organization United Netherlands. Year after year, students from all over The Netherlands learn that they posses more potential than they ever imagined. My time with United Netherlands has taught me that too. During the process that led to the allocation of WorldMUN 2009 by the Harvard Secretariat to United Netherlands I learned that when you bring together talented and motivated students from diverse backgrounds, everything that you strive for can be achieved.

Next year, I will preside over a board consisting of exactly this type of students. Together we will organize the largest and most inspirational WorldMUN ever. We strongly believe that the future of this world is in the hands of young people; young people with the ambition and motivation to change things. Therefore we view WorldMUN 2009 as the compass that will guide its participants in their efforts to achieve a better, safer, and more just global society.

There are not many conferences where 2000 students from all over the world come together to interact, reflect on international challenges, and work on solutions together. WorldMUN 2009 is the ideal place to ignite sparks of idealism in many young and talented hearts. That is exactly what will happen; we will inspire the participants, they will inspire each other and we will be inspired by them.

The organization of WorldMUN 2009 is a team effort. As such, anyone can support our team. By contributing to WorldMUN 2009 you will support the ambitious young people from all around the world as they – driven forward by the conviction of the possibility of a better world - invest in themselves, society, the future of mankind, and in our planet.

As the President of WorldMUN 2009 I would like to invite you to go through this booklet. It contains detailed information about WorldMUN 2009 and provides an overview of what we envision WorldMUN 2009 to be.

On behalf of the WorldMUN 2009 board,

In 2003 students of the Radboud University Nijmegen founded United Netherlands. Each year since then they have selected the best students from the Netherlands to join the delegation, which prepares thoroughly for the Harvard national Model United Nations. And each year they return to the Netherlands with ever improved results. In 2007 they won the award for Best Large and Best International Delegation – a feat which no European delegation had accomplished in years; and in 2008 they returned home with the award for Outstanding International Delegation.

When United Netherlands set out to make a bid for the organisation of the Harvard World Model United Nations in 2009, the Radboud University immediately and wholeheartedly supported their initiative, without a second thought. I am more than convinced that our students will organise an impressive conference, which gives the opportunity to more than two thousand outstanding and ambitious students from all over the world to meet each other, to discuss with one another and to learn form each other.

I also greatly appreciate the support that the city of The Hague gives to our students and I am convinced that this brochure will win others over to give their support to this conference. They can be sure of the fact that the Radboud University will assist it’s students in word and deed, on a daily basis.

The students who will attend the Harvard World Model United Nations can look forward to an inspiring and unforgettable week. I hope to meet you there.

Professor Dr. Sebastian KortmannRector Magnificus, Radboud University Nijmegen

Never before have so many foreign university students descended on The Hague for a conference. From 22 to 27 March 2009 almost 2,000 students will be arriving in our city to participate in the Harvard World Model United Nations, a major six-day simulation that takes place annually in a different city in the world. The students enter the arena as UN delegates to debate world issues.

Naturally, I’m incredibly glad that Harvard has chosen The Hague. The Dutch students who put forward our city as a candidate deserve a great compliment: the bid book they compiled is impressive. That gives me every confidence that the organisation of the event is well placed in their hands.

Support from a lot of people will be needed to make the conference work. The local authority, together with the Radboud University Nijmegen, is offering that support where possible. I’m hoping too that you will support this splendid event as well.

The Hague is an international city of peace and justice so it naturally has all the amenities one needs to offer guests a hospitable welcome like excellent conference facilities, hotels, restaurants, cafes, entertainment, culture and tourist attractions. The students need not be bored for a single minute.

I hope that the Harvard World Model United Nations, partly thanks to your efforts, will be a resounding success and that the participants will return home having had an unforgettable experience.

The Mayor of The HagueJ.J. van Aartsen.

United Netherlands, an organization with international orientation, aims to create a platform where “talented, ambitious and motivated young people can challenge each other to develop their full potential as global citizens”. We sustain this platform by our various activities. In them we do not only enrich students with theory, but also with the practical skills to deal with global challenges effectively. After all, these students will face the global challenges of today and tomorrow.

In 2009, WorldMUN will be one of these activities. Supported by the Radboud University, the city of The Hague and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, United Netherlands will host a conference where two thousand international students are brought together to discuss problems that torment the minds of current global leaders. I hope you too, will lend United Netherlands and the WorldMUN 2009 team your full support.

It is unique that a student-led organization is chosen to host WorldMUN: the Olympics among Model United Nations, within a mere five years of its inception. Yet this choice out of the ordinary does not come as a big surprise to me. United Netherlands, her contemporaries, and alumni all tend to possess a distinct drive for excellence, quality, and inexhaustibly strive for improvement in their activities. It is this attitude that creates an atmosphere where the sky truly is the limit.

To echo the words of William A. Foster: quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

Distinguished reader, we will strive for exactly this quality in WorldMUN, The Hague 2009. Sincerely hoping to see you there,

Niki FrenckenPresident United Netherlands

What is MUN?

A Model United Nations (MUN) is a conference organized by and for students and simulates committee sessions of the United Nations. Delegates to the conference will assume the role of an international diplomat, and, for the duration of the event, will negotiate the interests of the UN Member State that has been randomly allocated to them. It is a direct immersion in international politics, diplomacy and the world of the United Nations.

The unique experience of MUN allows and encourages delegates to improve their public speaking, debating and analytical and negotiating skills as well as broaden their perspective on a variety of international topics. The sessions are moderated by a director and are organized under strict rules of parliamentary procedure. As an activity for internationally oriented students, MUN has become increasingly popular over the past decade, with conferences now held all around the world.

United Netherlands

In May 2008, Harvard elected United Netherlands to host WorldMUN 2009. To cater to the grand size of the event, United Netherlands has created a separate foundation: the WorldMUN 2009 Foundation. The board of this foundation is tasked with the organization of this extraordinary conference. The host organization United Netherlands is an internationally-orientated foundation that aims to create a platform where talented, motivated and ambitious young people challenge each other to develop their full potential as global citizens. This network of driven young people attains knowledge and skills such as how to speak in public, negotiate, and lobby effectively. More concretely, United Netherlands offers the following activities to aspiring students: an accredited, six months course for her Harvard Delegation called “United Nations and Multilateral Diplomacy: Theory and Practice”, an international Model United Nations (MUN) conference, a High School Program, a bi-annual month of trainings and lectures on international relations and diplomacy, and several symposia on global challenges. Since its inception in 2004, the inexhaustible strive for improvement continues to flourish and as a result, United Netherlands is proud to offer yet another activity: WorldMUN 2009.For more information on United Netherlands:

What is WorldMUN?

Harvard World Model United Nations (WorldMUN) is the most internationally diverse college-level Model UN conference and the largest outside of North America. Every year around 1,650 college students from over 40 countries attend WorldMUN in a different location around the world; past locations include Puebla (Mexico), Geneva (Switzerland), Beijing (China), Belo Horizonte (Brazil), and Sharm el-Sheikh (Egypt). It is organized every year by Harvard University in cooperation with a host team. WorldMUN 2009 will take place in The Netherlands and is organized by United Netherlands.

This year, WorldMUN aims to be so much more. It should not be mistaken for a mere introduction to United Nations methods. Each conference day is filled with all kinds of events, in which delegates can interact. They have breakfast together, drink coffee before the session starts, lunch and dinner together and meet each other for drinks at night. Some delegates get so enthusiastic that negotiation continues until deep into the night, whether that is around the logging or in a bar. Groups of delegates will look for their committee colleagues to visit the parties together. Networks may be established, friendships may grow and even love affairs may settle.

In March 2009 the focus will be on a broad Model United Nations experience. The conference will open on Sunday 22nd of March 2009 and will close on Friday 27th of March 2009. This week will combine committee sessions and educative and cultural activities during the day with nightly social events. WorldMUN 2009 will be topped off with the Post-Conference Trip (Saturday 28th until Wednesday April 1st) which will provide the opportunity for the delegates to see more of the host country, to forget about diplomacy and international politics and just relax and have fun with the other participants.

Delegates will get to know The Netherlands. They will be visiting The Hague, ‘City of Peace and Justice’, Amsterdam, capital of The Netherlands, and Nijmegen, the oldest city in The Netherlands. They will taste the Dutch culture and go out in Dutch clubs. Meanwhile, they will get to understand international politics, diplomacy, negotiation and debate. Delegates from all academic, cultural and social backgrounds and beliefs will work together towards common goals. At WorldMUN 2009, ideas will come together and new ideals will be shaped. The final resolutions of this conference will give us a glimpse of the world of politics,

and the leaders of the future. While learning, they will be inspired and will inspire others. Together with people from all over the world the delegates can exchange ideas and experiences. They will embrace cultural differences, share weird recipes for local food and clash about the time when you are supposed to consume the food. Americans will drink caipirinha cocktails with Africans and Asians will discuss the future of the NATO with Europeans. A guy from Canada might even ask a girl from Belgium out on a date. What the Olympics in Beijing are for sportsmen, WorldMUN 2009 will be for students.

The Netherlands has a long international tradition of cooperation, being one of the founding fathers of the European Union as well as of the United Nations. We relish the opportunity to show our country, our traditions and ourselves to students from all around the world, so that they discover their potential as global citizens. Teams from Harvard University and United Netherlands are preparing for a WorldMUN that will be bigger and better than any previous MUN; one that will never be forgotten.

International City of Peace and Justice Once it was nothing more than a little lake in the dunes. Now, The Hague (in Dutch: Den Haag) is the third-largest city in The Netherlands and the fourth UN city of the world. It is home to many international organizations that are active in the field of peace and justice, such as the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Europol and Eurojust. The Peace Palace - constructed of materials gathered from all over the world - stands as a symbol of the evolution of The Hague as a city of peace and justice.

Almost half of The Hague’s inhabitants, 475,000 in total, originate from outside The Netherlands. Many have exchanged their home country for The Netherlands for good and others are stationed here for just a few years while working at one of the embassies or international institutions, of which there are over 100 in the city.

City of governmentThe Hague is the governing city of The Netherlands, which roots go back to the Middle Ages. The city was the home base of the Counts of Holland. In the 16th and 17th century, the era when The Netherlands comprised a republic of united provinces, the national government resided in The Hague. The Hague’s current status as Royal Residence and seat of the Dutch government is rooted in this.

The Hague, city by the seaThe sea is never far away for residents of The Hague. Whether traveling by tram, car or bicycle, the beach is within easy reach. The North Sea provides a place to saunter along the boulevards of Scheveningen or head for the peace and quietness of the dunes. For most

people in The Hague, a day at the beach is a leisurely outing. For the fishermen of Scheveningen however, the sea represents their livelihood. The nearby fish market is the perfect place to eat fish, with more and more trendy restaurants appearing a little further along at the marina. The sea is becoming ever more popular, with kite and wave surfers among canoeists braving the surf. On the beach itself a new stadium for beach volleyball and beach

football has been built.

City of cultureWorld-famous paintings of Rembrandt van Rijn and Johannes Vermeer can be found in the Mau-ritshuis, described by the New York Times as ‘the most beautiful museum in the world’. The Ge-

meentemuseum could justifiably be called the Mondriaan Museum, as it is home to the world’s larg-est collection of paintings by Piet Mondriaan. If you want to see how fishes change into birds you can do so in the Escher museum, where optical illusion is all around you.

Why The Hague?

Culturally, The Hague has more to offer than paintings alone: a world-class dance company, a symphony orchestra, the Royal Academy of Art and a vibrant pop scene. The hit song Radar Love, by the typical Hague group Golden Earring, narrowly missed being voted the Best Driving Song by the BBC’s car show Top Gear a short while ago. In the summer The Hague is the scene of Europe´s largest free open air pop festival.

The Hague is a delightful combination of history and modernity, a pleasant green city with an international flavor; the perfect host city for WorldMUN 2009!

Courts and Tribunals: International Court of Justice, International Criminal Court, the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, Iran-United States Claims Tribunal, Permanent Court of Arbitration.

As a student organization based on the campus of and supported by the Radboud University it is to be expected that we requested our own university to help us haul in the bid. In the eyes of the Board of the University WorldMUN is perceived as the ideal way to strengthen the international character of the Radboud University.Hence, the board was more than willing to lend us their aid and expertise. Among other things they are renting us office spaces, furniture, IT-equipment and so forth. Also, the Radboud University is providing us with a tremendous amount of services and support. The goodwill that is to be found in and around the university concerning the organization of WorldMUN is staggering. We try to make use of all the knowledge and expertise that the Radboud University has to offer. Moreover, the Radboud University has ample experience with MUNs. Over the last couple of years United Netherlands has participated in the Harvard National Model United Nations and has won the most prestigious awards. United Netherlands also organized the Radboud International Model United Nations (RiMUN) providing the Radboud with its own MUN. The professional character that United Netherlands has shown over the last years has rightly convinced the board of the university of the capability of the WorldMUN board and we are pleased with the way the University is cooperating with us to organize WorldMUN 2009.

External partners

In order to be able to organize a large conference such as WorldMUN 2009, it is essential to have the support of several institutions that are willing to aid us in different ways: financially, materially and by providing services. These external partners are the main sources for support in different ways, ranging from the provision of envelops to the arrangement of reduced costs for travel tickets in the The Hague council area.At this moment, our main external partners are all non-commercial organizations who directly benefit from helping to organize WorldMUN 2009. These are: The Radboud University, the city council of The Hague and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In this chapter we explain for each of these partners, why we work together with them and what the mutual benefits are.

The city council of The Hague has agreed to help organizing WorldMUN in order to promote the city of The Hague as ‘the city of peace and justice’. The Hague is the fourth UN city and is very internationally oriented. The city council

wishes to emphasize this and is therefore looking forward to WorldMUN. Our relationship makes it easier for us to acquire services within the city of The Hague, all the experience and knowledge of the municipality of The Hague will help the organization in a multitude of ways. To give just a couple of examples: they will help with promotion, providing WorldMUN flags in and around the World Forum and the city centre during the conference, and with the Social Program, by letting us use the city hall as a venue for the Global Village free of charge. The Hague will see a stream of 2000 tourists into the boundaries of their city. The participants will not only get to see The Hague, they will also be provided with options

to explore the culture and surroundings of this intriguing city. All in all, The Hague and The Netherlands will profit from the boast of tourism that they will experience during the days of the WorldMUN conference.

Last, but certainly not least, is the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Since WorldMUN 2009 not only is one the largest international student events in the world, but also focused on international affairs, the Ministry applauded the bid to bring WorldMUN 2009 to the political capital of The Netherlands. A letter of recommendation by both Maxime Verhagen (Minister of Foreign Affairs) and Bert Koenders (Minister of Development Aid) depicts the confidence of the Ministry in the ability of United Netherlands to organize WorldMUN 2009. The letter is

published in Appendix A.After the organization of WorldMUN 2009 was assigned to us, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs offered, among other things, to help invite keynote-speakers. The public standing of these people will help to generate

publicity in and around WorldMUN, while sharing their view on contemporary global issues relating to the topics of WorldMUN. Next to that, we will be able to host the ‘Drinks

of Diplomacy’ event at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs itself and the Ministry has arranged free visa for all delegates. Like all other Dutch ministries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is situated in The Hague. It is a unique opportunity for them to profile Dutch politics as open, tolerant and with an eye towards the future. WorldMUN enables them to

do so in a way that young individuals, who will make up the next generation of world leaders, will gather in The Hague to discuss contemporary issues of global importance. The present-day dynamics in the world need young, ambitious and talented people who look towards the future and people who are willing to invest in sustainability. WorldMUN 2009 attracts these people and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already recognized that.

The primary elements of the WorldMUN 2009 conference will take place in the World Forum. The convention center is based in The Hague World Forum, the city’s international zone. Institutions like the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) as well as the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) are located in this area. Together with the ambience of the World Forum they contribute to the United Nations feeling.

The decisions that are taken at The Hague World Forum have a bearing on the entire world. Sometimes, however, it are the personal encounters that make a difference. These could, for instance, include an enlightening conversation with colleagues at a corporate event or enjoying a cultural event together. Every encounter at the World Forum is a special event that can change your view on the world. No wonder the slogan of the World Forum is ‘Events that shape the world!’. During WorldMUN 2009 there will be enough of such events making the World Forum the best place to organize our conference.

The World Forum is an impressive convention center with more than enough rooms to house all the committees, and still has plenty of space for the lobbying sessions and other activities. The opening and closing ceremonies will take place in the World Forum Theatre. With its 2161 seats and multiple possibilities for light and sound effects, the theatre guarantees impressive ceremonies.

Besides the World Forum and the Peace Palace, other venues will be used for activities of WorldMUN 2009. We are very glad that the city hall of The Hague, the Atrium, has been offered for free by the municipality of The Hague for the Global Village on Monday March 23. Because of the white color the Atrium got the nickname “the ice palace”. The Atrium is the busy, beating heart of the City Hall and will be a perfect venue for our Global Village.

AccommodationDelegates at WorldMUN sleep in hotels, hostels or bed&breakfasts. Although they are free to find their own accommodation, we will provide all information on the options we arranged. WorldMUN has an agreement with ITO tours to supply hotel accommodation to WorldMUN participants at discount rates. ITO Tours is a privately owned, forward thinking tour operator that works closely with its clients and suppliers around the world. Thousands of tourists are accommodated by ITO tours every year. Therefore, the operator is able to arrange low prices for WorldMUN delegates. Close cooperation with ITO tours warrants more than sufficient hotel rooms for everybody in diverse price ranges.

By contracting StayOkay, Skotel, JorPlace and others we have also arranged sleeping accommodations in lower price categories Furthermore, we are in a continuous search for other possibilities like sport halls and schools where our volunteers and those with a small budget, for example delegates from developing countries, can sleep.

Transportation during WorldMUN 2009 will entail more than the journey to and from The Hague. We will make sure transportation within The Hague to social events and during the Post-Conference trip runs as smoothly as possible.

A strategic transport plan has been made, based on the following objectives:• Adequate and safe transport;• Punctuality;• Smooth arrival and departure;• Diverse means of transport and • Minimal inconvenience to delegates and residents of The Hague.

Most delegates are expected to arrive at Schiphol airport. The Amsterdam Schiphol international airport is the 4th largest passenger hub in Europe and connects 200 destinations in 83 countries. Schiphol boasts an integrated train station, with bi-hourly train rides to The Hague Central Station, taking 35 minutes. We seek the possibility of setting up an information desk at Schiphol airport to inform the delegates on the best way to go to The Hague. Another large information desk will be set up at a central point in the Central Station of The Hague and also at The Hague’s second station, ‘Hollands Spoor’. All delegates entering The Hague by train will be welcomed by volunteers of WorldMUN 2009 and hosts from the City of The Hague. Delegates will be guided to their hotels or directly to registration.

At the registration, the delegates will receive among many other things, a city map and an unlimited travel pass for all public transport in and around The Hague for the duration of the conference. This travel pass is provided by HTM, the purveying company of public transport in and around The Hague.

Besides cooperation with HTM, WorldMUN is also in close cooperation with global airplane alliances and local taxi companies. Personal contact with high officials of these companies guarantees smooth and cheap transport.

Day to dayWorldMUN 2009 starts on Sunday with the registration of the 1800 delegates, which will take place at the city hall of The Hague, the

Atrium. Because of its central location and accessibility from the central railway station this is the ideal location for the registration. In the afternoon, those participants who are less experienced with MUN will be offered a short course on the rules of procedure. In the evening the opening ceremony will take place in the World Forum Theater. With a fluent combination of inspiring speeches (by a famous key note speaker, the Secretary General, Timur Kalimov, and our president, José Dominguez Alvarez) and a show filled with dance, music and video effects, WorldMUN 2009 will be officially opened.

On Monday morning, the committee sessions will kick off. Every committee will have two issues of global importance on their agenda. To increase the knowledge of the delegates on the two subjects, one or two experts on the matters will provide them with more in-depth knowledge.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday will have longer lunch breaks in which we will organize several different activities. One of those is the NGO workshops. During these workshops, delegates can sign up for a certain NGO and will be given in-depth information on a particular global problem. This problem, of course closely related to the NGO giving the workshop, will be thoroughly discussed. The diverse backgrounds of the delegates will cause different, broad and surprising viewpoints. This might cause the debate to get quite heated at times. No room for narrow perspectives here which probably brings up some interesting ideas!

Another lunchtime activity is the career event. During this career event, various

types of multinationals and organizations can present international job opportunities.

After the lunch break, students will start the second debate session which will hopefully bring them closer towards a solution based upon consensus.

The day will end with the first social event; a typical event for WorldMUN: the Global Village. The Global Village is a bazaar of global culture, where all participants stage products and objects typical for their home country. The basic principle of this bazaar is to enlarge the intercultural understanding and to provide a situation in which the students can interact socially on different levels. The Global Village has been a success for many years, since it is the perfect base to get to know not only each other but also each other’s cultural habits of different countries in an informal setting.

After a very interesting Global Village, Tuesday will start with a new session in which all delegates will continue to represent their country to the best of their abilities. After a morning of intense debating and negotiating we have planned a world class symposium on International Criminal Law. This will most likely take place in the World Forum Theater. The symposium will be of a high academic level with world class speakers, like prosecutors and judges from the international courts present in The Hague. Since it is about violations of human rights and crimes against humanity, it will most likely spur interesting dialogues and heated discussions. The symposium, that will have provided breathtaking new insights to some students, will be followed by the so called in-conference visits. Students can sign up for visits to e.g. the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court and the Mauritshuis.

Tuesday afternoon will entail a special activity for head delegates. Head delegates are the ones in charge of the delegation. He

or she also registers the delegates, often arranges the accommodation and more. Most of the time the head delegates are the most motivated and most eager students within a delegation and we want to give them a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet ambassadors, diplomatic officials and a number of high officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. About 130 to 150 students will be given the chance to talk to precisely the persons they are simulating during WorldMUN: diplomats.

Unfortunately there is a maximum to the amount of students that can attend this event: ‘The Drinks for Diplomacy’, but we will make sure that the other delegates will have a great time too. We will offer

the opportunity of committee dinners. As the name implies, these dinners are especially arranged for the 21 committees, with the purpose of providing an opportunity to look past the country he or she is representing and see the person behind the delegate.

After dinner, there will be a party. Lively conversations and enjoying each others’ company will be the general ethos.

By this day, the delegates will be more acquainted with each other and will be in full control of all the ins and outs of a MUN by now, so it is time for a full day of committee sessions. Again, allies will be made, power blocks will shift and resolutions will be amended.

During lunch break there is another moment where we could organize a second career event with more or other companies.

Dinner, very needed after a long and demanding day of peaceful negotiations or diplomatic warfare, will be followed by the second traditional social event: cabaret night. Cabaret

wednesday, 25th of March 2009

night at WorldMUN is different from an ordinary cabaret to the extent that the delegates themselves will perform in front of their peers. The performances differ in many ways but have one thing in common: great enthusiasm. Some will sing, others will act, others will perform acrobatic caprioles, others will perform magic tricks and there is always someone who does something you have never seen before.

When midnight closes in on the delegates the venue will be converted into a dance club which will create another opportunity to meet people in a totally different setting.

Thursday will kick off with a committee session. Each committee will hopefully already be close to a resolution, or otherwise

will need to start working hard on making one. Other committees will already have passed one resolution and will start working on the second one. There is not much one can predict on which course a committee will take, so we will not even try. When the morning sessions come to an end, most delegates will go to Amsterdam. We will try to show them Amsterdam in the Japanese kind of way: see as much of our capital as possible in the shortest amount of time.In the evening the biggest party of WorldMUN 2009 will shake the foundations of the Powerzone. This venue is big enough to have all delegates, the host-team, the Harvard team and all the volunteers and alumni of United Netherlands party together and still leave enough room for some extraordinary dance moves. The Powerzone is just minutes away from the A4 that will bring the delegates directly to The Hague, where they will enjoy the needed hours of sleep.

Friday is a special day. It is the last day of the WorldMUN 2009 conference and the last chance for all delegates to come up with a resolution, while making sure a large majority of the committee supports the proposed resolution. Especially this last part can be very difficult. The question is: will the diplomats find a win-win compromise and pass the resolution or will they stick to their own standpoints and let the resolution fail? This is always an exciting moment in a MUN!

By lunch time all sessions will be closed and the floor will be given to WorldMAP, the alumni association of WorldMUN, which has organized a social venture competition. Delegates can submit ideas to solve problems via the WorldMUN website. Students that have the best ideas will present their solutions. The best idea will then be rewarded with the opportunity to bring the idea to life, supported by

the advice of WorldMAP and maybe also the American department of McKinsey. Youth representatives of different countries will also be present. Young people should participate in decision-

making within the UN. The UN is also promoting this (www.un.org/youth) and we want to contribute to this idea ourselves. This will be done by (former) youth representatives that will talk about their experiences during their time with the UN and explain how delegates can become youth representatives themselves.

In the afternoon there will be the closing ceremony. After the best delegates have been awarded with diplomacy awards the Secretary General of WorldMUN 2009 will officially declare the end of the conference.

This does not mean that the WorldMUN 2009 conference is really over. We will close off WorldMUN 2009 with a stunning farewell party on the beach of Scheveningen; a fantastic party to end an unforgettable week.

Academics

WorldMUN The Hague has scientific ambitions on multiple levels. The students will spend most of their time discussing different subjects in the committees. There will be a simulation of committees like the Security Council and the General Assembly, in which students strive to reach consensus and design a written resolution. Talented students from Harvard University have determined the contents of the different committees: which subjects

will be discussed and what material will be studied beforehand. By that, the level of discussion is maintained.

Specialists on the subject will introduce the committee sessions. We will invite speakers with special knowledge in particular fields to introduce the subject or provide additional information and perspectives. Delegates will be able to ask questions and in this way the debate will intensify and become more substantive. All the committees will have at least one speaker to broaden the knowledge of the delegates. We will try to attract internationally acclaimed speakers by cooperating with organizations, preferably in The Hague area. Because of economic reasons most speakers will be either of Dutch origin or working in the Benelux.

At the opening ceremony of the conference, it is tradition to have inspirational speeches provided by prominent international figures. We have send invitations to Tony Blair and Kofi Annan, as well as crown prince Willem Alexander. We will have at least one high profile international speaker and another high profile speaker native to The Netherlands.

At the conference we will organize a world class symposium on International Criminal Law. We aim to bring together the different ideas and opinions of many cultures and nationalities. Judges, prosecutors and other experts in international criminal law will defend and discuss motions, after which all those present can voice their own opinions. Through this, delegates will share ideas and beliefs and maybe even provide inspirations for the future.

The Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) workshops are designed for the idealistic delegate. WorldMUN has the potential to be a truly inspiring event and with the NGO workshops, we will provide a platform to develop the delegates’ global idealism, since we all know how one inspiring person can have a tremendous impact. Some things are easily changed for the better with a little bit of idealism, energy and creativeness.

NGOs from many diverse fields will be invited. The delegates would be able to attend workshops that will take place during the lunch break. Fifteen to forty people shall be allowed to attend these meetings and lunches will be provided. Already, many NGOs that we contacted have reacted positively to this idea.

Post-Conference Trip

After an intense conference week with a tight schedule it is time to relax! No more uncomfortable suits and ties, time constraints and head-breaking problems that need solving. The idea of the Post-Conference Trip is to provide an opportunity for the delegates to see more of the host country and to relax and have fun with the other participants. During this week delegates will not longer be the delegate of South Africa or Spain, but will finally be referred to by their own name.

We will make sure that the program fulfills a diverse range of wishes delegates might have, while guaranteeing that different assets of The Netherlands are explored.

Not many countries are able to say that 60% of their nation is situated below sea level. This fact has influenced the development of The Netherlands severely. It should come as no surprise that we intend to take a look at the role water has played in the

past and will continue to play in the future. We have a lot of ideas, ranging from Neeltje Jans and the Zaanse Schans to mudflat hiking at the Wadden Sea, where the magical underwater world is exposed at certain times during the day due to low tide. A guide will get us acquainted with the biodiversity and secrets the sea bottom has to offer during this phenomenal experience. However, The Netherlands has more to offer than water alone. To give just one example, The Netherlands has a very vibrant student life. This will be shown first in Nijmegen and later in Amsterdam.

The host University of WorldMUN 2009, the Radboud University, is situated in Nijmegen. As students from this University we know the university and the city and we will certainly try to show our enthusiasm to all the participants. This will be easy; although Nijmegen is the oldest city of The Netherlands, it has a remarkably young and lively atmosphere since it is home to almost 18,000 students.

The Wadden Sea

26

Page 27: WorldMUN 2009 - NTUA · PDF fileWorldMUN 2009 Supported by: March 22 - 27 The Hague 2009 WorldMun

Our plans for Nijmegen are diverse to say the least, from scanning the brains of people from very different cultures to see if there are any differences to a battlefield tour. Nijmegen has been scarred by severe bombing during the Second World War and we will take a moment to remember this black page in history and remind each other that cooperation and peace are not easily obtained.

The Post-Conference Trip will come to an end with a visit to the beautiful capital of The Netherlands: Amsterdam, symbol of Dutch tolerance and liberalism. This city hosts the widest range of nationalities of any city in the world. Everybody will love this city of endless opportunities which will bring the WorldMUN spirit to one last final climax! Museums, art, architecture, shops, an amazing nightlife… you will find all this and more in Amsterdam.

The Post-Conference Trip aims to be an unforgettable journey through the heart of The Netherlands and its people. It intends to provide delegates with an education in the vibrancy and beauty of the country, in a relaxing and comfortable style. At the same time long lasting friendships will be forged. Furthermore, it will draw to a close WorldMUN 2009 in a way that will leave delegates inspired, exhilarated and competent to move into the future with an altered outlook on the world.

SponsorshipWorldMUN 2009 is a unique event that attracts around 1800 students from across the globe to discuss world problems. The diversity of the cultural, social and academic backgrounds of the delegates will fuel the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the conference. Students will challenge each other in order to

try to resolve contemporary global issues that concern everyone. These aspects ensure that WorldMUN is a unique opportunity for every corporation that wishes to profile itself as investing in the future. Also, it exposes corporations to a large group of upcoming professionals: students that are about to enter the labor market.

For the organization of WorldMUN it is necessary to actively seek out potential investors: to guarantee that WorldMUN 2009 will be the best so far, it is vital that we receive aid from other parties. Not only to cover the necessary financial costs, but also to provide the participants of WorldMUN 2009 with a well organized conference.

WorldMUN 2009 will attract a large amount of possibly interested sponsors. However, we will not provide all of them with the same options. As a guiding rule, the more the sponsor is willing to contribute, the more the sponsor receives in return. In the upcoming pages we will briefly elaborate on possible forms of sponsorship. While explaining how we distinguish the forms of sponsorship, we will explain how we view their contribution to the conference and lastly what we can offer our future investors in return.

If you are interested in supporting WorldMUN 2009 or if you are looking for more information regarding sponsorship, you can contact our Director of Finance: J.H.A. van Dijck.

Corporate SponsorshipCorporate sponsorship, also known as event marketing or cause marketing, occurs when a private institution or firm pays to become associated with certain events or campaigns. This provides firms with the unique opportunity to place their product, brand or image into the marketplace through association. This form of sponsorship is an up-and-coming type of promotion and has grown rapidly over the recent years.

The corporate sponsors of WorldMUN 2009 should be internationally oriented in order to align themselves with the cosmopolitan atmosphere of WorldMUN. WorldMUN is an event where idealism runs high. Our own experiences teach us that young people can be inspired to take up part of the responsibility we share as global citizens to improve our world, piece by piece, day by day. We are looking for companies who share and advocate this idea. In short, companies willing to invest in the future of humanity and the future of the world.

We believe that the right corporate sponsors will be a worthy addition to WorldMUN 2009. Not only do they help by increasing the possibility to organize the largest, most diverse and best WorldMUN so far, they will also add their view

The aid we are striving to acquire can be categorized in three different forms:

• CorporateSponsorship;• PublicFinancialAid;• MaterialSponsorship.

“We are looking for companies willing to invest in the future of humanity and the future of the world.”

of a durable future to the WorldMUN 2009 conference, improving the dynamics. Companies that have their heart in the right place will undoubtedly provide a new, previously unnoticed, dimension to WorldMUN 2009.

Public Financial AidWe hope to receive public support from both public authorities and national funds that support initiatives that contribute to society. We believe that public support is as equally important as corporate sponsorship. WorldMUN 2009 is focused on providing young people with both the skills and knowledge required to gain insight in, and to effectively deal with, decision-making on an international level while stimulating intercultural contact. We are looking for public funds and institutions that are willing to support this idea.

In The Netherlands there are several public funds which allocate subsidies for different types of events. Most of these have one or more topics of interests which they

Material Sponsorship Next to financial aid, there is also material sponsorship. Material sponsorship entails the provision of goods or services by an organization or business as a means of aid through indirect financial means. Organizing a conference like WorldMUN requires a various amount of services and goods. Material sponsorship therefore is a very welcome addition.

There are limitless possibilities for material sponsorship; nearly every aspect of the conference can be provided through means of material sponsorship. In order to give ideas of the available options, we will give several examples.

At the start of the conference the participants will be given a conference bag. This bag will contain items ranging from a conference guide to pencils. Sponsoring the manufacturing of these bags will not only make sure that that the participants of WorldMUN will be able to see your company logo, it will add to the professional atmosphere of WorldMUN 2009.

perceive to be imperative for the event to adhere to before allocating funding. Consequently, we have narrowed down the amount of funds to a handful we believe to be our most realistic options From the list of possible funds we have selected a list of funds we perceive to be our primary possibilities. These are Fonds 1818, the Hivos Fund, Icco, NCDO and VSB. Each of these funds have different topics ranging from supporting international events in and around the Dutch province of Zuid-Holland (Fonds 1818) to creating more awareness for people in developing countries (NCDO). WorldMUN itself is a broad conference and touches on the criteria set by these funds. We are convinced that we can find possible partners in these funds.

However, we know that there might be funds and foundations we are not aware of yet. We would be grateful if anyone would bring these funds to our attention.

Also, during the conference the organizational team needs to be in constant contact. While we can rent walkie-talkies or any other communication device, we are looking to acquire material sponsored phones, head-sets and/or free tariffs. A sponsor could provide us with these assets which will greatly increase the effectiveness of our communication while making sure that their equipment is seen throughout the conference as the organizational team will be carrying it around.

Other examples include: t-shirts for all the 200 to 260 student volunteers, a rented car for the WorldMUN 2009 organization and drinks during a social event.

All previous examples are focused on actual material goods, but there is more. While the focus might be on goods, the provision of professional services, such as those from a law firm or accountancy, can provide us with e.g. legal advice and an auditor’s report. Pro-bono work is equally valuable in assisting us with the organization of WorldMUN 2009.

ABOUT us

“This year I am the president of a unique event: WorldMUN 2009. Unique in the way it combines fun with learning; idealism with practice. It stimulates progressive thinking and creates a problem solving attitude. Perhaps it even spurs progressive believing. One of the things I have learned from United Netherlands is that many people are unaware of the extend of their talents. With talent comes responsibility and I strongly believe that this world is ours, that we have a shared responsibility to communicate with and learn from each other and that we need to tackle the common challenges of our time together. And that is my link with WorldMUN. We will make sure that we will have around 2000 ambitious and talented students from all over the globe present at WorldMUN 2009. The atmosphere of progressive thinking, problem solving and consensus searching might then very well ignite sparks of idealism that will leave even the biggest sceptic inspired”

“MUN’s are about resolving problems, problems with multiple solutions. Whatever we do in life, we will almost always try to solve problems in a way that suits ourselves the best. When taking the amount of countries in the UN, each with their own interests, into consideration, it seems like an insurmountable task to solve problems. That is where the challenge lies and we all like challenges, otherwise we wouldn’t participate in a MUN. We, the WorldMUN 2009 board, will provide with a well organized conference – and many more - where you have nothing to worry about, except you own country’s interest. Challenge yourself in The Hague at WorldMUN 2009 and we’ll provide the rest.” - Jasper van Dijck

“My name is Kim Rijken and as the Director of Logistics and Operations it is my duty to let WorldMUN 2009 take place in the most fantastic venues, while all the logistical aspects run as smoothly as possible. Though having extensive experience in organizing all kinds of events, this conference will exceed everything in its magnitude and its multicultural and idealistic dimensions. To be able to provide a climate in which students from all different backgrounds are encouraged to look beyond their own borders while discussing global issues is an opportunity no one should miss. Considering the great organizing skills of all the board members and our shared dedication, enthusiasm and ambitions I feel totally confident that we can organize the best and most exciting WorldMUN to date!”

“I’ve become enchanted by WorldMUN after my participation in Geneva in 2007. So many different nationalities gathered in a city which played such an important role within the development of the international community, I did not think it could get any better than that! However… It can! The professionalism of United Netherlands combined with all that the city of The Hague, ‘the legal capital of the world’, offers creates a golden combination. I believe there is no other city in the world, where the WorldMUN spirit can develop its full potential like the city of The Hague. WorldMUN is about multicultural interaction, creating dialogue, exchanging experiences and knowledge while having a lot of fun in the meantime! The international atmosphere in The Hague will make it impossible for people to rigorously hold on to their own believes, it will inspire people to approach the world with an open mindset!”

“MUN’s bring lively discussions and resolutions, and above all lots of fun. The success of WorldMUN 2009 is depending on the drive and enthusiasm of organization and participants. As the Director of Staff I will try to assemble a team consisting of the best assistant-directors there are, and offer them a training to further optimize their qualities. Works needs to be done everywhere, and we will need lots of volunteers. It will be an incredible experience to see how a dedicated group of young people combine their efforts to organize this conference, dealing with every obstacle on their path.
