Special Notes
HTTPs vs HTTP in Logo and Chat URLs
OCLC is deeply committed to the privacy of patrons and staff using our end-user interfaces and of the
security of the interface. As part of our ongoing improvements to WorldCat Discovery, we would like to
move the entire experience into the secure HTTPS protocol. This improves upon the existing security in
WorldCat Local, in which HTTPS was only used for users who had logged in. We would like to move even
anonymous searches to HTTPS, so that no patron searches or temporary lists are ever sent “in the
clear”.
We plan to implement very soon so please check your settings and make the necessary changes
described below.
Changes needed:
Third-party chat widgets will need to be invoked via HTTPS. HTTPS needs to be supported by the
chat supplier and your library may need to change the chat URL in Service Config. Chat is
configured as the first link in My WorldCat.org > User Interface Options > Custom Links. Note
that for QuestionPoint libraries the transition is seamless and requires no action from the
Library. Continuing to call an HTTP element from a secure page will display a user message to
the effect that there is secure and unsecure content on the page; the messages vary by browser
but are not conducive to a smooth searching experience.
Institutional logos will need to support and be invoked via HTTPS . This change can be
implemented in Service Config. Logos are configured in My WorldCat.org > User Interface
Options > Customize the banner > Logo image URL. Logos which continue to support only HTTP
will appear in the secure interface as hyperlinks.
Note that links or search boxes on external Web pages which access WorldCat Discovery will not have to
be changed; these will refer automatically to the secure URL.

Include Request ID with problem reports
When reporting an issue with WorldCat Discovery, it would be extremely helpful to include the Request ID. The Request ID is found on the bottom of the screen on which the issue occurred. Including this information allows us to directly trace what happened on the particular request we are troubleshooting.
Known Issue
WorldCat knowledge base holdings for articles – held by statement now correct
We previously reported a known issue where the Held by statement was incorrect. Your users may have
been presented with results that did not have full text links or may not have seen items with full text
links. We are pleased to announce this issue has been resolved so all Held by statements are displaying
correctly.
Exported citations have complete data
Improvements were needed to our EndNote and RefWorks citation exporting. Articles and chapters
now have complete source data. Some bibliographic data was mapped to the wrong citation fields. This
has also been corrected.
Staff ILL Request button launches WS ILL in new tab/window
A bug was discovered that the Staff ILL Request button was no longer opening a new window/tab to
launch WS ILL, but was opening in the same window/tab. This has been corrected.

New Features
Knowledge base notes display in the user interface
In WorldCat Discovery we have implemented the display of KB notes. This allows your library to add
collection or title level notes in the KB that will help your users determine coverage details and location
information for the collections/titles to which you subscribe.
To add KB notes, log into your OCLC WorldShare account under OCLC WorldShare > Metadata >
Collection Manager, and search for the Collection or Title for which you’d like to add notes. Notes can be
added at the Collection level or at the Title level provided the collection/title is customizable.
Customizable collections/titles are indicated by the pencil icon and hover text indicating the title can be
edited in the KB.
5
Screens from Knowledge base editing in OCLC WorldShare > Metadata > Collection Manager.
6
KB notes at the Collection level are added under the Collection > Properties section. The Notes section is
collasped by default. To add notes click on the Show Details link. The Public note field is the note that
will appear in the user interface for your patrons, the Staff note displays only for staff who manage the
KB collections.
7
KB notes at the Title level are added under the Collection > Titles section.
8
KB notes at the Title level example follows.
9
In WorldCat Discovery the KB notes are displayed as shown in the example below. The first note comes
from the Collection-level setting and the next three from the Title-level settings. Each note is preceded
by a bolded label indicating the type of note.
New features in support of Group transitions
With this release we introduce additional functionality to ensure groups will make a successful transition
to WorldCat Discovery. New features include a group referral URL and assistance with bulk OCLC Service
Configuration settings. For more information contact your OCLC representative or Group Administrator
if you are currently a group participant. OCLC will be contacting Group Administrators with more details.
NOTE: Current FirstSearch subscribers that are members of a group can register on their own for a
WorldCat Discovery URL on our website here. The new features we are adding in this release are
designed to help groups move many subscribers at once but there is no requirement for group
participants to move as a group.
Request Item button launches patron request form in new tab/window
Libraries can now control whether the patron fulfillment (place hold and resource sharing) opens in the
same window/tab or a new window/tab. This is controlled in Service Configuration/My
WorldCat.org/Place Hold Request Buttons.

Print Book Format
We are pleased to announce the creation of a Print book format. This new format will allow your users
to limit to print books from the Print book facet. Creation of this format requires changing data in
WorldCat and reindexing those records. This is a massive undertaking which will be carried out over
several weeks after this February install and should be finished by the end of the month. Since the
conversion cannot be done in a single day, there will be a short period of time of mixed formats. That is
some records will have Book and others will have Print book. Ultimately the records that now have
Book format will be Print book. As the days pass, more will move over to the Print Book format.
Here is a screenshot from our Development environment of how this will look:

Changes to Scrollbars
A change has been made to navigation when the side panel is open. Instead of both scroll bars being on
the far right, each scroll bar is adjacent to the panel it controls.
