Vermont State Parks Open for the Season As the unofficial start to the summer season, Memorial Day Weekend marked the re-opening of Vermont’s legendary state parks. Vermont’s 52 state parks offer a wide variety of day use activities (such as boating, swimming, fishing, picnicking and hiking) and camping experiences, including drive-in camp sites, lean- to’s, cabins, cottages, remote campsites, group camping areas, and an inn-style lodge. Every park and site is surrounded by Vermont’s beauti- ful mountains, lakes, forests and fields. Overnight fees at Vermont State Parks range from $18-$95 per night, depending on accom- modations. As of mid-May, there were still camp sites available for the popular Memorial Day Weekend. Interested campers can find campsite descriptions, check availability, and make reser- vations online at www.vtstateparks.com. The website also lists Vermont’s top five state parks for hiking, biking, family camping, paddling, views, and remote camping. “With 52 state parks, there is truly something for everyone,” said Craig Whipple, Vermont State Parks director. “Each park has its own spe- cial feel, features, and activities. The challenge is picking just one! That’s why we encourage peo- ple to consider buying season passes.” Day use fees are typically $3, but an $80 vehicle pass provides unlimited day use entry to any park, all season, for up to 8 people in one vehicle. Individual passes and punch cards are also avail- able, and a free one-day pass for up to 8 people can be checked out at local libraries. Once again, Vermont State Parks will be sur- prising lucky day visitors with Random Acts of Camping, to encourage day-users to try over- night camping. Randomly-chosen winners will receive two free nights of tent, lean-to, RV or cabin camping. The program will kick off at Elmore State Park on June 11. Every Wednesday, state parks staffers will announce which park they’ll visit on the Vermont State Parks website, Facebook and Twitter feeds. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Vermont Arts Council, Vermont State Parks will host a series of art events throughout the state this summer. Artists will be creating art in sev- eral parks as part of “Of Land and Local,” an exhibit designed to encourage dialogue around Vermont landscape issues. At the end of the sum- mer, the pieces will be exhibited at Burlington City Arts and other venues. Jeff Alberghini and the Varsity softball team invited the East Montpelier Little League Softball team to join their practice. The varsity girls broke the little league girls into groups to work on dif- ferent skills and did various drills. The practice was a fun lesson for all as the varsity girls were able to share their knowledge and love of the game and the little league girls were able to see what can happen as their skills develop. Everyone was able to meet new friends and share their love of softball. A generous donation from the Robert DiYeso Charitable Trust will allow girls from several Vermont towns to attend YWCA Camp Hochelaga in South Hero, Vermont this summer according to Executive Director Deb Sawyer Jorschick.

We are very pleased to have made the con-nection with Robert DiYeso Charitable Trust and are able to send ten more girls to Camp Hochelaga this summer, said Sawyer Jorschick. Its the kindness of others that makes our Camp so spe-cial.

Scholarships from the Trust will be given to girls in the Vermont towns of Waterbury, Duxbury and Moretown, making this summer camping experience possible for girls who may not have otherwise had the opportunity to attend camp.

The Robert DiYeso Charitable Trust was established by a former Vermont resident who is

deceased, and the funds are disbursed by trustees according to how they believe Mr. DiYeso would want.

Camp Hochelagas 2015 season runs from June 28 until August 15. All interested potential scholarship recipients can contact Terry Melton at the YWCA of Vermonts Office at 802-862-7520 or go to www.ywcavt.org and fill out a scholarship application.

As a YWCA affiliate, the Camp Hochelaga experience is designed to expand horizons as well as skills. Worldwide the YWCA is an orga-nization with over 400 associations, drawing together members who strive to create opportu-nities for womens growth, leadership and power to attain a common vision: peace, justice, free-dom and dignity for all people.

The Winooski Natural Resources Conservation District (WNRCD) is accepting applications for sponsorship to the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Conservation Camps. The WNRCD will sponsor one deserving child for one week at camp.

The Winooski NRCD receives a small amount of base funding from the State of Vermont to undertake conservation work throughout several watersheds in Vermont, including the Winooski River Watershed and the Lake Champlain Basin. Base funding allows WNRCD staff to apply to grant programs throughout the state and beyond to help a variety of landowners protect their soil and water through conservation-minded practices. The WNRCD also runs an annual tree sale from which funds are then used to support like-minded events such as the annual Envirothon and sponsoring one child to attend the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Conservation Camp.

As such, the WNRCD is welcoming applications to sponsorship until June 30, 2015. To be considered for sponsorship, applicants must be from one of the 41 towns that comprise the Winooski NRCD (Chittenden County, Washington County or Orange,

Williamstown or Washington in Orange County) and provide a short written statement of why s/he would like to attend camp this summer. Please visit the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Conservation Camp website to discover where a child could go: http://www.vtfishandwildlife.com/edu_camps.cfm#whocanattend.

Sophie Sauv, District Manager at WNRCD said, We feel strongly about providing the opportunity (to attend camp) to a deserving youth in our area, to give her or him the chance to build a strong connection to our natural resources early on. We may take this for granted in lush, green, Vermont, but camp is a special experience that heightens the senses and can open a childs love of the outdoors like nothing else.

For more information about what the Winooski Natural Resources Conservation District does, including working with landowners to protect soil and water, helping foresters log more sustainably by renting out portable skidder bridges, assisting farm-ers in a nutrient management plan classes or educating the public about everyones role in keeping our waters clean, contact: Sophie Sauv: 802-828-4493 x110 or [email protected].

Free Training for Forest Pest First Detectors AvailableVermonts Forest Pest First Detector Program will provide free

training on June 13 in Montpelier for volunteers interested in scouting for three invasive insects: the Asian longhorned beetle, emerald ash borer, and hemlock woolly adelgid.

Training will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. at the National Life Insurance Company, 1 National Life Drive, in Montpelier. The rain date is June 14. University of Vermont Extension; Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation; Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets and the U.S. Department of Agricultures Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service have partnered to offer this program.

To register, contact Gwen Kozlowski, volunteer coordinator at the Vermont Urban and Community Forestry Program, at (802) 656-6646 or [email protected] by June 9. To request a disability-related accommodation to participate, please contact her by June 1. Continuing education credits are available.

Prior to the in-person training day, individuals must complete seven online modules. Training will cover pest biology and iden-

tification, survey protocol and tools for sample collection and communications, including how to work with the media and respond to calls from the public about insect pests. Individuals are expected to be able to identify common tree species.

Certified Forest Pest First Detectors must commit to a minimum of two hours per month for one year to respond to screening calls about insect pests, visit sites to collect pest samples and act as a local liaison between their community and federal and state part-ners. They will receive a toolkit containing a manual, sample-collecting supplies and other tools and reference materials. They also will have access to the National Plant Diagnostic Networks resources and may participate in additional trainings and research projects.

Early detection of these invasive pests will help minimize eco-nomic and ecological damage to forests and prevent populations from becoming established in the state. First Detector volunteers are on the front line of defense against pest infestations.

In honor of the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a new website makes it clear that Vermont is a place for equal opportunity adventure.

Www.InclusiveVermont.com links to the states offi-cial tourism website, www.VermontVacation.com. It features an interactive Google map of adaptive recreational opportunities and accessible facilities. From the new wheelchair water access at North Beach Municipal Park in Burlington, to the new universal trail at Waterbury Center State Park, vis-itors of all abilities will be able to find ways to enjoy Vermonts breathtak-ing beauty.

Inclusion is an important value in Vermont. We want everyone to feel welcome here, said Megan Smith, Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing. Our new web page makes it easy to find adaptive sports such as sailing and paddling in the sum-mer, or skiing and snowboarding in the winter.

The website will link to outdoor events in
