This award - with one prize forradio and another for television -seeks to reward the very best livejournalism that has providedoutstanding coverage of a majornews story.

We are looking for live coveragethat has delivered the facts as wellas context. We want to see that theaudience is able to understandwhat is happening and be guided as

to how the story may develop. Thejournalism will be comprehensiveand understandable, but notsensational or speculative. It will besensitive and compassionate whenthe situation demands. Thejournalists will show they can copewith a fluid situation when factsmay be in short supply.

If the entry relates to a long-running story, such as an extendedconflict, we will want to see howthe coverage remains consistentover a period of time. Our judgeswill need to see evidence of howthe story has been kept fresh sothat the audience does not becomeoverwhelmed or bored.

You should submit a compilation

of the story, demonstrating how thecoverage unfolded. Any internaledits in the coverage you aresubmitting should be clear in thecompilation.

Investigative documentaryBroadcasters are powerfulorganisations that can holdpeople to account, uncoveringissues and establishing facts thatsome would rather keep hidden.

In 2013, the AIBs are lookingfor the engaging presentation ofan outstanding original, thoroughinvestigation that takes the lid offan area of life or society.

The programme willdemonstrate extensive researchthat shows in the narrative. Theremay have been risk-taking toreveal a story that is of majorpublic interest. The judges willwant to be reassured thatsuitable protection was affordedto those people whose stories

may have assisted uncovering thestory.

The investigation is likely tohave given the audience answersto difficult, hard-hitting, relevantquestions. The programme mayhave led to an enquiry by theauthorities that has resulted in aprosecution or perhaps led to achange in legislation.

We’re not looking forsensationalism. We want to seeclear, well-documentedjournalism and story-telling thatinvestigates an issue at home orin another country.

The programme shoulddemonstrate the role TV or radiohas in making sure that justice is

done.We’re looking for superior

production values, clear andunderstandable presentation andfirst rate editing.

Current affairs documentaryDocumentaries on TV and radiocan be powerful pieces offactual story-telling. They canhelp audiences make sense ofmajor stories across politics,religion, science and manyother subjects.

We are looking for singledocumentaries, or an extendedthemed programme sequence orseries, that has covered a topicalsubject in an interesting andperhaps unusual way.

The programme should providethe audience with an insight thatis difficult to get elsewhere.There are two TV awards in

this category: best internationalcurrent affairs documentary and

best domestic current affairsdocumentary.

For the international award,your entry might be adocumentary that reports on amajor international incident or itmight reveal a hidden story fromsomewhere in the world that hasnot been covered in mainstreamnews bulletins.

For the domestic award, yourentry might cover the reaction toa particular situation in yourcountry, and its aftermath.

We’re looking for superiorproduction values, clear andunderstandable presentation andfirst class editing.

The story must be explained

without bias and providesufficient context to enablepeople unfamiliar with the storyto understand the subject.

Science programmeTelevision and online dossiers havethe power to bring science intopeople’s homes and to presentcomplex issues in highly creativeways.

From dark matter to theexploration of the deepest partsof the seas, the development ofnew energy sources to thesurvival of endangered species,there are many subjects that canbe tackled by mainstream media.

AIB is looking for the mostcompelling and imaginativescience programme or seriesthat explains complex scientificconcepts clearly and leaves theviewer wanting to learn more.

Our judges will be looking for

stunning photography whetherfilmed in challenging remotelocations or in an urbanenviroment close to home.

Narration and story-telling willneed to be clear andunambiguous. The creative use ofgraphics to help explain complexconcepts in an easy-to-graspmanner is likely to be equally asimportant.

The programme or series willappeal to a wide generalaudience. Your programme orseries may also have generated“water cooler” discussions orconsiderable traffic on socialnetworks.

All documentaries - whether

single programmes or completeseries - must have beentransmitted or distributed onlinebetween 1 June 2012 and 30 June2013.

Creative featureWe are searching for a radioprogramme, and an episode from aradio series, that combines creativeand exceptional use of the mediumwith superb story-telling andoutstanding sound design.

We have deliberately left thiscategory wide open. Over the pastfew years we have had anoustanding range of programmesof an exceptionally high creativestandard, and in many differentlanguages.

In 2013, we are looking for moreinspiring productions that tellstories with clarity and withpassion.

The winning entry will havemade full use of the sound stage,

offering an immersive programmethat captivates listeners’imaginations. It might be atravelogue or a drama that helps totell an important story or explain amajor issue of the day.

Whatever your programme, it’sgoing to be something that ourjudges, along with your audience,will remember for a long time tocome.

Children’s factual programme/seriesAIB recognises the importance ofthe genre and that children’stelevision must not only entertainbut needs to stimulate intellectualdevelopment too.

With competition from screensin children’s bedrooms and in theirhands, thanks to tablets andsmartphones, TV has to workharder than ever to encouragechildren to sit and watch a speciallycrafted programme. But by startinga conversation, a great piece offactual TV can quickly be shared byyoung viewers on social networks,gaining greater recognition andbigger audiences.

Our children’s factual award issearching for an entertaining,

informative programme or seriesthat is designed for childrenbetween the ages of six and 14.

It could be a nature programme,or a feature about differentcultures. It might be a science-based programme or one thatdeals with news and currentaffairs.

We are looking for the beststory-telling, the highestproduction values and forpresenters who engage with theiryoung audience and communicateissues compassionately andeffectively.

It is likely that the programmeor series will have an onlinecomponent to provide additional

Short documentary, feature or reportNot every news story ordocumentary calls for a 30’production. In fact, there is anincreasing number of top-qualityshort documentaries and reportscovering a remarkable range ofsubjects broadcast both ontelevision and by online publishers.

Indeed, online news servicesand newspapers are investingheavily in video content, oftenproducing short features tocompete with TV.

This category is open tobroadcasters, independentproducers, newspapers and onlinevideo portals who produce reports,features and documentaries with arunning time of a maximum of 10’.

Telling a story effectively in thattime can be challenging,particularly for complex issues. Wehave seen a range of excellent workin this category. Newspaperpublishers in particular areroutinely supplementing text andstills with video. This is starting tochange the way some reporting isundertaken.

We’re searching for the beststories told in a succinct yeteffective way, that grab theaudience’s attention and deliverfactual stories in new ways.

Live sports coverageSport captures the imaginationlike almost nothing else when itcomes to TV. Some of the largestglobal and domestic audiencesare created by large-scaletelevised sporting events. There’salso extensive innovation in thisgenre, with exciting newpresentation tools available toproducers, commentators andlive presenters.

In 2013, AIB is looking for themost outstanding live TV sportscoverage.

The winning entry is likely toinclude ground-breaking pre-event scene-setting sequences,going behind the scenes, talkingwith athletes and competitors as

they prepare for their events.There will be world-class

graphics that offer viewers arange of detailed contextualinformation.

Great camera work, greatvision mixing, great commentary,great titles - all of these will bepart of the mix that gains theproduction a place in the 2013shortlist.

This award will helpdemonstrate best practice insports broadcasting, offering amasterclass in production topeers around the world.

Personality of the yearAIB is passionate aboutbroadcasting. We know that thepeople who work on screen andat the microphone share thatpassion. The AIB personalityawards in 2013 will be presentedto the most engagingpersonalities on air today.

We are searching forpresenters who exude passion fortheir craft and demonstrate thatthey are passionate about theiraudience as well.

The winner will beknowledgeable, enthusiastic andpossess that “something” thatmakes their audience - and ourjudges - pay attention.

It’s likely that the winner will

be a regular on-air presenterwho’s authoritative without beingoverbearing and comes across tothe audience as someone theycan rely on to tell them the facts.

Our judges are looking forpeople who can demonstrate thatthey have a “well-stocked” mindand who relate to the stories theyare presenting. The personality ofthe year will stand out from thecrowd and make viewers andlisteners take note. And ofcourse, if they are interviewers,they will instinctively know thequestions that their audiencewant asked and not be afraid toask challenging questions.

Our judges will want to see

evidence of the presenter’s workin a showreel that lasts for amaximum of 45’. They will alsowant a biography, demonstratinghow they have reached the top oftheir profession.

Transmedia productionIn many markets, audiencesconsume content on a range ofdevices. They also seek out moreinformation on multiple platformsand want to interact with story-tellers and share ideas withfriends.

This is why transmediastorytelling is increasinglyimportant. Telling a single story orproviding a “story experience”across multiple platforms andformats using digital technologiespresents a tremendous opportunityto craft productions that exploitopportunities on multipleplatforms.

The best productions AIB hasseen since we introduced this

award have actively engaged andinvolved audiences on multipledevices before, during and afterrelease of the main programme.

In 2013 we are looking for themost innovative production thatworks across multiple platforms.For example, it might be a TVprogramme that allows viewers togo deeper into the subject via amicrosite on the Web withadditional material, in video, audioand text.

We certainly expect to seeentries that harness the power ofmobile to engage audiences.

Our judges will be looking forthe most creative solutions thattruly harness the power of multiple

platforms to deliver outstandingcontent in an innovative way.

The demands of new platformsand cross-media publishing meanthat new technological solutionsneed to be employed inbroadcasting centres that allowproducers and journalists to craftprogrammes simply and effectivelyfor multiple outlets. At the sametime, the production process needsto be as easy to understand and to

use as possible.The 2013 AIB technology award

will recognise the company thathas developed the mostappropriate, useful andtransferable technological solutionfor the broadcasting industry, inproduction, scheduling, distributionor in content aggregation.

The judges will look at the wayevery entry has solved a specificneed in the TV, radio or onlinemedia industry, enabling a contentproducer to be more effective.

WHO RUNS THESE AWARDS? The AIBs are administered by theAssociation for InternationalBroadcasting, the not-for-profit,non-governmental industryassociation and global knowledgenetwork for the internationalbroadcasting industry. Theseawards were launched in 2003 atthe request of the AIB's members.

DO WE PAY TO ENTER?Yes, there is an administration feefor each entry. We keep costs as lowas possible, but these annual Awardsare a major undertaking and involvesignificant resources at the AIB.

The entry fee for TV,transmedia and productiontechnology is £150 (this includesUK VAT @ 20%) per entry.Companies that are members ofthe AIB, fully-paid up at the time of

entry, benefit from a reduced entryfee of £75 (including UK VAT @ 20%).

The entry fee for radio is £105(this includes UK VAT @ 20%) perentry for non-members, and £60.00(including UK VAT) for AIB members.

Entry fees can be paid online,using PayPal or secure credit cardthrough WorldPay at www.aib.org.uk,or by including the cardholderdetails on the entry form.

We also accept internationalbank transfers, but £10 must beadded to each transfer (not eachentry) to cover bank charges.

WHAT IS THE CLOSING DATE?1600 GMT on 5 July 2013.

HOW DO WE ENTER FOR TV?We accept entries produced in SDand HD, 4:3 or 16:9. Werecommend that you submit

entries online (HD entries can onlybe submitted online) although wecan accept SD entries on tape.

ELECTRONIC SUBMISSIONS1. Complete and send the entryform (page 25 of this booklet, andonline at www.aib.org.uk);2. You will receive a confirmation e-mail with details of how to uploadyour entry to our online portal;3. Upload your programme andaccompanying paperwork to ouronline portal.

TAPE SUBMISSIONS1. Complete and send the entryform (page 25 of this booklet, andonline at www.aib.org.uk). Enclosea PAL digibeta or DVCam tape withyour entry plus three (3) DVDs ofthe entry, as well as anyaccompanying paperwork.

How to enter

One entry form is needed for eachentry, whether electronic or tapesubmission. Do not send acompilation of episodes. All entriesmust be submitted as they wereinitially broadcast with no re-editing.[For the journalism, sport andpersonality awards, you can send acompilation of coverage to asuggested maximum duration of 30’.]

Please record the mixed audio onall channels and ask a technician toverify that the audio and video havebeen properly recorded.

Please tell us the 30” clip yourecommend to use if your entry isshortlisted – provide the exact starttime in minutes, seconds and frames.

In addition to the video material,we need a transcript for non-English entries and all TV entriesnot in English must have English-language subtitles.

Please also supply a synopsisand other relevant information forour judges. Transcripts, synopsesand other information must be inPDF or Word formats.

ENTRY FOR TV PERSONALITY Showreels and biographies shouldbe submitted. Make sure theshowreel provides sufficientmaterial for the judges to evaluatethe entry.

The showreel should be aminimum of 15' and a maximum of45’ in length. You may also submit acomplete programme that thepresenter has hosted.Slatesmust be added to each

tape. Slate information mustinclude the entry name, the awardcategory name plus yourorganisation and key contact name. If the showreel is not in English,

we need a transcript and the entrymust have English-languagesubtitles.

We also require a selection ofhigh resolution JPG images and abiography of the presenter.

ENTRY FOR TRANSMEDIA AWARDWe recommend that you treat thisin a similar way to a TV entry: sendin three (3) labelled DVDs (or CDs)with a presentation that demonstratesclearly how the production wentonto mobile or cross-mediaplatforms, with live hyperlinks tothe online portion if applicable.

We also need a writtenexplanation and synopsis thatshould be provided on a labelled CD.

There should be a videoshowreel submitted electronically(preferred) or a labelled PAL-format digibeta or DVCAM tape. For

electronic entries, you will receivelog-in details for our awards portalwhen we have received your entryform and payment.

ENTRY FOR RADIO AWARDS The AIB requires three (3) labelledCDs with the radio or audioprogramme you are entering.

Please ask a technician to checkthat the audio has been properlyrecorded on each CD.

a similar way to a TV entry. You need to submit material that

will engage the judges and makethem want to know more about thetechnology concept you areentering. Please submit three (3)labelled CDs or DVDs thatcompletely explain the entry usingPowerPoint and/or video, togetherwith a detailed written explanationof the entry - in English - in MSWord or PDF format. We highly recommend including

a video presentation of up to 10’duration to explain your entry - wealso need this for our shortlistpresentation. You should submitthe video electronically as an MP4file (preferred) or a labelled PAL-format digibeta or DVCAM tape. Wewill send you details of our onlineportal to upload entries when wehave received your entry form.

MY ENTRY IS NOT IN ENGLISH That’s good, because we activelysearch for entries in everylanguage. However, since all thejudging is carried out in English, weneed to provide our judges with away of evaluating the production inthe English language.

Send us an English-languagetranscript of the entry (this appliesto radio and to television) in PDF orWord format.

In addition, TV entries musthave English-language subtitles toensure that our judges fullyunderstand your entry.

CAN I ENTER MORE THAN ONCE? There is no limit to the number ofentries you can submit, either forthe Awards as a whole, or for anycategory.

You must send a separate entry

form and pay a fee for each entry.

WILL MY ENTRY GO ON SHOW? Shortlisted entries in everycategory will be shown during theAwards night in London on 6November.

Shortlisted entries may also beavailable on the AIB's websites andon video-sharing websites. Byentering, you grant AIB permissionto use extracts of your programmesonline for non-commercial purposes.

HOW DO WE SEND OUR ENTRIES? All entries must be sent to the AIBAwards office at the AIBheadquarters in the UK.

We are using an online systemfor TV entries for the first time andprefer uploads to tapes!

If you are sending your entriesby courier from outside the UK,

mark the package as containingnon-commercial items and showthe value as the lowest possibleamount (we recommend US$10 pershipment). The AIB is unable to pay any

customs or import duties on awardentries sent to us and will return tothe sender any packages thatrequire customs duty to be paid.

For entries from UK-basedcompanies, we recommend that youdispatch your entry to us usingRoyal Mail Special Delivery. Avoidusing couriers - the AIB is locatedin rural Kent and the cost of amotorbike courier from centralLondon is well over £120!

DO YOU RETURN ENTRIES? No. Do not send us pricelessoriginals. We cannot be heldresponsible for their safe-keeping.

HOW DOES JUDGING WORK? The AIB will be shortlisting all theentries during July and August andsending the shortlisted entries toour international jury in September.

We’ll announce the shortlist inearly September.

The results will come back tothe AIB from our judges in October.We’ll then produce the Awards and“highly commended” certificates intime for the AIB Awardspresentation in London onWednesday 6 November 2013.

We do not give information aboutthe winners in advance.

WHEN ARE THE AIBsPRESENTED?This year’s AIB Media ExcellenceAwards will be presented during agala dinner at LSO St Luke’s inLondon on Wednesday 6 November.

The evening will start with a

reception at 1730, followed by dinner. Tickets for the Awards dinner

are available now, with an early-bird discount for all bookings madebefore the Awards closing date of 5July 2013.

The early bird rate valid to 5 July2013 is £165 plus UK VAT formembers of the AIB, or £200 plusUK VAT for non-members. Pricesafter 1 July are £200 plus VAT forAIB members or £1,900 plus VATfor a table. For non-members, theprice is £225 plus VAT or £2,150plus VAT for a table.

By entering the AIBs, you agreethat if your entry is shortlisted youwill send at least onerepresentative to attend the awardsdinner on 6 November.

WILL YOU TELL US IF WE WIN? Shortlisted entrants will be advised

in October. However, AIB will notrelease any final results beforethe Awards evening on 6 November.
