July 2013 Newsletter Vol 6: Issue 1 - World Wide Workshop Newsletter
Dear Partners and Friends, July brought me back to my home of Israel, where I visited
with family and friends, honored my amazing educator/musician mother who died last July,
practiced daily yoga in a Tel-Aviv port on the most beautiful beach, traveled to the Negev
desert with my brother and sister and our families, and connected with social entrepreneurs
and education changemakers from companies across IsraelIDC, MEET, MindCet, ZeZe,
SimClass, Elevator, Evolero, Curiyo--whose impressive entrepreneurial work prompts me
that effective innovation in education and related fields is brilliantly underway back home. Ongoing
improvements in access to edtech, as thisrecent Economist articleproposes, will help open doors to engaging,
relevant, social learning for youth and adults everywhere. With Globaloria, we have explored the potential of
this for the past 7 years. In July, this included training educators nationwide how to provide excitingbroadband-
learning opportunitiesto underprivileged students, sharing ideas and best practices on the potential for playing
and making games to transform education via the Stanford Social Innovation Review and EdVENTURES
conference, and partnering with SanDisk Corporation to reach more communities with better learning. Thanks
for your support of global education innovation! Cheers, Idit

2. Educators Learn at 5th Annual Globaloria Academy in Austin
New and returning educators gathered with school leaders and Workshop staff for the fifth annual
Educator and Leadership Academies in Austin, held at East Austin College Preparatory Academy
(EAPrep), July 15-19. The week began with the Educator Academy, intensive training to prepare
Globaloria teachers to lead students in programming and blended learning. The Leadership Academy
followed, bringing local principals, superintendents and curriculum directors together for sessions that
empower them to support and grow innovative digital learning in their schools through Globaloria. The
week concluded with the awarding of two 2013 Globaloria Educator Inspiration Awards. Mandy Laurence,
a middle school teacher at EAPrep, was recognized as Best New Educator in Texas, and Nyssa Arcos
Evans, Globaloria Director and teacher at EAPrep, received the national award for Best Mentor, in
recognition of her support of new Globaloria educators.
Shannon Sullivan recognizes Mandy as Best New Educator.
The commitment of educators and administrators in Austin over the past five years is reflected in this
coming years expansion of Globaloria to students in elementary, middle, and high school levels and to
include new curriculum offerings across EAPrep and Manor High School.

3. Microsoft Hosts Globaloria Teachers at Silicon Valley Educator Academy
Silicon Valley kicked off its third year of Globaloria on July 30, whenMicrosoftopened their Mountain
View campus to new and returning California educators and new Wyoming educators for the regional
Educator Academy. The Academy was led by Workshop staff and supported by Workshop partner
Microsoft through the donation of their space and technology for the training. Microsofts Community
Outreach Manager Thea Smith Nilsson and Technolgist Kenny Spade greeted educators with a formal
welcome and an Xbox One product demo, demonstrated the corporations ongoing support of Globaloria.
"Our YouthSpark initiative empowers local youth by bridging the opportunity gap and expanding digital
inclusion. We encourage and support innovative educational programs, such as Globaloria, to create
future leaders, talent, and opportunities for Silicon Valley,"said Nilsson.
Dozens of Globaloria educators gather forThea Nilsson's welcome on behalf of Microsoft.
In the upcoming 2013-14 year, there are over 1500 youth at ten schools and two community centers that
are participating in the Globaloria program in California. This popularity is reflected in the addition of 3
new schools, and 100% of 2012 -13 participants continuing with the program in 2013-14. This year will
also be the launch of Globaloria in Wyoming, where all middle schools in Sheridan County District #1 will
offer Globaloria to 6th and 7th grade students.
4. Spotlight on Globaloria Teacher Dianne Kintana
Dianne Kintana started Globaloria last September with an open mind and some
apprehension. The math teacher at Herman Intermediate School, in San Jose,
California, embraced Globaloria because she recognized the relevance of learning with
technology. However, as someone with little experience in coding or game design,
Dianne found herself assuming a new role in teaching Globaloria: student. Globaloria
training helped her develop strategies to guide her students through the curriculum, but
as they delved into game development, she realized no amount of training could
prepare her with all the answers. I get stuck on things and my students trouble shoot
for and with me! she said. Dianne relied on the digital library of Globaloria video tutorials and on-demand
virtual mentorship and expert help to stay one step ahead of her students. She encouraged them to
similarly teach themselves. Though Dianne admits it was uncomfortable at first to not have every answer
for her students, she came to appreciate it as an opportunity for teaching how to learn. I am glad I get
stuck, too, and am totally transparent about that with my students. I want them to know that it is
completely okay to get stuck, but that we all need to find ways to problem-solve rather than sit and do
nothing about it.Dianne will be returning for a second year as a Globaloria teacher this fall, feeling "more
experienced and confident to lead this class."

5. Accelerated Summer Learning for CA Middle School Students
Enthusiastic young gamers in Oak Grove School District in San Jose, California, suffered no loss of
learning this June and July thanks to the Globaloria Game Design Camp at Sakamoto Elementary
School. Educator Ashley St. Lawrence, who teaches Globaloria at Herman Intermediate School,
welcomed campers in 5th through 8th grade to develop and publish interesting games on a range of
topics. A few campers delved into illustrating Gods and Mythology from all over the world, some elected
to focus their games on keeping the environment clean, and others had engaging action sequences set
to music!
OGSD Camper presents his game to fellow campers, friends and families.
6. Canadian Journal LEARNing Landscapes Publishes Globaloria Case Study

the Digital World: Possibilities and Challenges, featured a case study of two Globaloria
sixth graders.Dont Give Up: A Case Study on Girls and Video Game Design, authored byWorld Wide Workshop research partners Laura Minnigerode and Dr. Rebecca Reynolds
(Rutgers University), examines how the students engagement with learning content
related to their personal lives increases digital literacy learning, and found evidence that
the subjects' program participation was associated with increased interest and self-confidence in STEM.
7. SanDisk Awards Grant to World Wide Workshop for Globaloria in San Jose
SanDisk Corporation, a global leader in digital storage solutions, awarded a grant to the
World Wide Workshop to support the continued deployment of Globaloria in San
