Numerous area businesses

gave their support by purchasing

banners which were prominently displayed at the end of each lane for the entire weekend.

Food sponsors, Olive Garden, Serious Texas BBQ, Pulcinnella Pizzeria and other local merchants fed the hungry throng with gen-

erous donations. Many thanks to

Chipper’s Lanes for hosting the

tournament, event coordinator

Noting the 106th anniversary of Ro-

tary is a great way to promote your

club and Rotary in the media. Getting

your story out is far easier when you

have a “news hook.” That’s something

about your story that has current news

value, such as a special event, a timely

award or something of general public

interest that your club has done.

The anniversary of Rotary’s begin-

ning can be such an opportunity.

Make it a local “Rotary Day.” Here

are some examples:

*Write a letter to your local newspaper

editor that recognizes the anniversary

and describes the contributions Rotary

has made in your community and the

world.

*Contact your local government offi

cials and ask them to issue a proclama

tion honoring Rotary Day.

*Create a special club event that gener

ates public interest (i.e., an End Polio

Now! Fund-raiser; a community ser

vice project or a program at your regu

lar meeting about Rotary that is open to

the media and the general public)

*Give your members buttons to wear,

fliers and posters for their businesses

and other items that promote Rotary

Day. (i.e., “It’s Rotary Day. Ask me.”

*Provide members with a list of bullet

points that describe important club and

RI accomplishments. (A partial list of

these is posted in the District 5440 PR

Website.)

Show your pride in Rotary and help

your community understand who you

are!

Rotary Leadership Institute a Winner in Scottsbluff!

Rotarians from Nebraska and Eastern Wyoming immersed themselves in The Rotary Foundation, leadership skills, membership recruitment and retention, team-building, fund-raising and club projects during the initial Rotary Leadership Institute course at Scottsbluff on Saturday, January 29th. “We had a wonderful group from the Rotary clubs of Scottsbluff, Torrington and Gillette,” District RLI chair Phil Murphy said. “We had 20 participants in all, so the RLI team divided the group into two sections, which worked amazingly well,” Murphy said. Assistant District Governors Bar-bara Redder and Rotary Club of Scotts-bluff-Gering president Jim Trumbull helped the RLI team organize the ses-sion. RLI facilitators Murphy, Julie Phares, Gerry Crites, Mike Forney, Dave Scriven, Barbara Redder and George McIlvane traveled to Scottsbluff for the sessions. Because of the enthusiastic response at Scottsbluff, Murphy said the team would reassemble there in April for Course Two. All three courses will also

be held in Fort Collins on April 23rd. “Rotary Leadership Institute has been a huge success in District 5440 since the first courses were taught in 2009,” Murphy said. 48 Rotarians from the district have completed all three one-day courses. Many were recognized and formally graduated at the 2010 District Conference in Casper. In addition to Scottsbluff, RLI courses have been held in Casper, Fort Collins and Jackson.

“Rotary Leadership Institute is an outstanding opportunity for each club to improve the Rotary knowledge of its key people. These courses also expose participants to successful new ideas on leadership. The exchange of ideas with other experienced Rotarians alone makes the courses worthwhile,” Murphy said. Susan Van Deren from the Rotary Club of Windsor, who attended an earlier RLI ses-sion in Fort Collins said: “RLI, bar none, was one of the best experiences I've ever had. The training gave me a deeper understanding of Rotary, as well as numerous take-aways that can be applied to eve-ryday life. The fellowship was amazing and proved that even though people come from different clubs and differ-

ent towns, the challenges are the same,” she said. Each club is encouraged to nominate poten-

tial leaders in their club to attend RLI which cost $40 for each course. The payment covers the course ma-terials, lunch and limited travel expenses for the fa-cilitators. Most clubs cover the cost of the Institute for their nominees. The program was founded by Rotarians in 1992. Today 33 Rotary districts in North America use the program. District 5440 joined the initiative in the summer of 2009. More information about the RLI program is available on the district website at www.rotary5440.org.

PDG George McIlvaine takes RLI participants through a team-building exercise.

the RLI training.

Evanston Rotary Club looking for partners for Water Project in Guatemala The members of the Rotary Club of Evanston, Wyoming would like to invite other clubs to be part of a $100,000 global grant for a wáter project in Guatemala. This is a rainwater collection project that fits into the local Mayan culture and geography. As this goes to press five other clubs have joined us and we only need $20,000 more to fully fund the project. If you have international money left in your budget this year please consider joining us. The following is a justification for the project. Guatemala is a country with significant needs. Distribution of income is highly unequal with the top ten percent of the population comprising forty percent of consumption. Most of the government resources are spent in the cities excluding most of the indigenous Mayan population. More than half the population lives in poverty with 15% living in extreme poverty. The indigenous groups make up 38% of the population with a poverty level of 76% with 28% living in extreme poverty. Water is a basic need for health, sanitation, income and the ability of children to go to school. For example, if they are spending hours each day fetching wáter, they do not have time for school. Members of the Evanston Rotary Club visited Guatemala in February 2010. We formed a relationship with the Huehuetenango Rotarians and are partnering on this global grant. This is a remote area of Guatemala near the Mexico border and we have seen the need first hand. This is our first global grant and we believe in it enough to pledge $15,000, much more than we have ever pledged to an international project. The total proposal is very detailed and has been reviewed by a civil engineer in our district who thinks it is structurally sound. We are happy to provide a copy of the detailed proposal to any interested clubs. Contact Person: Julia Murray at [email protected].

Rotary Club of Lander looking to partner with other Clubs

for two on-going Medical Aid Projects in Central America By

Manny Muniz, Assistant Governor Three members of the Rotary Club of Lander, Dr. Dale Peterson DDS, his wife Jennifer Peterson (who is the Club Secre-tary), and Dr. Hart Jacobsen MD and his wife Josey, have been traveling to Honduras and Guatemala for several years to bring medi-cal aid and supplies to the impoverished people of those countries.

Guatemala Medical Aid Project

Funding is needed for a medical, dental and school mission in a small town called La Labor, just outside Guatemala City. Two Catholic sisters run this mission, Sangre de Cristo Health Care Project, and it has been in existence for 15 years. Dr. Jacobsen has visited them and holds annual Ear Nose and Throat clinics. He was very impressed with the work the religious sisters are doing. One of the sisters is an educator and the other a nurse. They also have a public health outreach that deals with sanita-tion, immunization and reforestation. Almost 50% of the operational monies come from small patient contributions but the remainder has to come from other sources. Because of the economy, institutional dona-tions and grants have been drastically reduced and the sisters are plead-ing for assistance.

Honduras Medical Aid Project

The second medical aid project concerns a small group of dentists, physicians and other professionals from Lander, Wyoming. This group has taken yearly mission trips to the Mosquitia region of

Honduras. Dr. Dale Peterson and his wife Jennifer head up this group, Mission of Mercy. The mission group travels by small boat visiting villages along the Patuca or Warunta rivers or on the Lagoon near Puerto Limpera. Dentists do extractions, fluoride treat-ments and supply toothbrushes. The physicians treat general medical problems. Treatment for parasites and distribution of eyeglasses are also performed. The costs are primarily borne by the traveling participants with some fundraisers to help with the cost of medical and dental supplies. Dr. Jacobsen said "I think a $10,000 request would be reasonable if we were successful with a matching grant and were joined in this effort by other Rotary clubs in District. If we were successful then the funds could be split between the Guatemalan project Sangre de Cristo Health Care Project and the Mission of Mercy group for Honduras." Please contact Assistant Governor Manny Muniz [email protected] (307) 335-7733 if your club is interested in joining this humanitarian undertaking and help these dedicated doctors deliver needed medical aid and supplies. Their efforts truly epitomize "SERVICE ABOVE SELF".
