World Oceans Day, 2021
World Oceans Day, 2021
The concept of World Oceans Day was first introduced in the year 1992 in the Earth Summit
in Rio de Janeiro with an objective to make people aware of the contributions of oceans in our
life and to celebrate that contribution of oceans.
Around 70% of the earth is occupied by oceans, which is not only an essential element of this
planet but also an important element for the sustenance of life. Around 50% of the planet’s
oxygen is produced in ocean, all the marine animals exist because of the balanced condition
under ocean. Regarding the livelihood of people it is expected that around 40 million people
will get employment opportunities in ocean based industries by 2030. Many marine resources
are used as food, medicines etc. But due to the over exploitation by human beings the health of
ocean is getting deteriorated. The marine resources do not get enough time for regeneration.
In this context, the theme of this year “The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods” is the most suitable
theme to celebrate World Oceans Day. The source that sustains life and provides multiple
livelihood opportunities to people should be saved and the resources should be preserved. The
objective behind this celebration is to create a movement among people regarding the ocean’s
contribution in the planet and the urgent need to manage the oceans sustainably.
With this objective on 8th June, 2021 on the day of World Oceans day, Gujarat Ecology
Commission (GEC) tried to involve school and college students in this movement, as they are
the future of the society. An e-poster competition was organised for the people above 12 years
of age to understand their perspective on the day and the importance of oceans in their eyes. A
flyer was distributed through WhatsApp, Facebook, emails and Instagram so that interested
candidates can participate. Through their posters various interesting perspectives have come
out. Some has tried to convey the rise of sea level due to Global warming and its impact on
life, some has portrayed the livelihood options, like fishing, provided by ocean.
GEC organised this event from 7th June – 14th June, 2021. 9 students from various educational
background submitted their posters, some of them drew. Overall, it was successful as the
perspectives from all the posters were similar. They all understood the importance of saving
oceans and all wanted to stop the crime of polluting oceans by human beings. 3 students among
them were chosen on the basis of the content and designing of their posters for awards and the
rest of the participants are given e – certificates. The details of the winners are listed below.
