From Fr. Tony
I realize that my column in last week’s bulletin was
probably a shocker, but I also hope and pray that we trust
that God has a plan for us. Just like good things came out
of Abraham trusting God (rewarded with numerous
descendants), and Peter, James and John trusted in Christ
taking them up a tall mountain (rewarded with the
Transfiguration), I truly believe that good things may also
come out of this new transition for our AFC. We just have
to trust.
Speaking of trust, like Jesus did to the Temple in this
weekend’s Gospel, He also wants to do for our temples of
the Holy Spirit. He also wants to clean house. He wants
to get rid of things that are not of Him. He wants us to
entrust our hearts and souls to Him asking Him to get rid
of our sins. Attached to the bulletin, you will find a
confession schedule of when confession times are and a
brief, but hopefully helpful, examination of confession. I
also am including steps to help you to celebrate the
sacrament. As we make this next step in our journey of
faith as an AFC and Church, what better place to celebrate
healing and peace then in this sacrament. In this
sacrament and the changes in our AFC, with God’s help
and trusting in Him, maybe someday we will say with St.
Peter, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here.”
In Christ through Mary,

2018 Traditional Marriage Public Square Rosary
Crusade will take place on Saturday, March 17 at
NOON. It is coordinated nationally by Tradition, Family
and Property and its America Needs Fatima
campaign. We are being asked to pray the Rosary for
Traditional Marriage between one man and one
woman. This date takes place closest to the Feast of St.
Joseph. The place we will pray needs to be determined, so
watch for more information to follow.
Custodian’s Corner
The Power of the Name of Mary
In 1683, the city of Vienna was besieged for two
months by Muslims of the Ottoman Empire, threatening
Christianity and all of Europe. Pope Innocent XI called
for the Rosary to be said throughout the continent to plead
Our Lady’s help. In response, Polish forces under the
command of King Jan Sobieski mustered at the Marian
shrine of Czestochowa, and on August 15, the Solemnity
of the Assumption, set out for Vienna. They reached the
beleaguered city a month later and found themselves up
against 300,000 Muslim forces. Nonetheless, they trusted
in God’s providence. On September 12, a force of 20,000
soldiers charged down the mountainside, led by 3,000
heavily armed Polish cavalry known as the Winged
Hussaria. As they charged, the Polish lifted up their voices
in a hymn in honor of Mary, the Mother of God. Within
three hours, the siege was broken and the enemy fled back
to Turkey in utter defeat. In gratitude to Our Lady for her
intercession, the Pope extended the Feast of the Most Holy
Name of Mary to the entire Church, which is still
celebrated on September 12 to this day. Most of us have
heard of the power of the Holy Name of Jesus, but it seems
that few also realize the power of the name of Mary.
Because of her perfect union with her Son, Mary’s name
strikes fear into the demons and gives comfort to God’s
children, which are also hers. This is why the Hail Mary
and the Rosary are such powerful prayers and effective
means of asking for God’s grace. As we continue our
Lenten journey, let us never forget to ask Our Lady for her
help in our struggles and our pilgrimage toward Heaven.
She will help us gain the victory just as she did for the
Christians in the Battle of Vienna. Holy Mary, Mother of
God, pray for us! Dan Davis
STEWARDSHIP: PRAYING GRATEFULLY,
SERVING RESPONSIBLY, GIVING GENEROUSLY
“How many “gods” do you put before God? “Idols” do
not always take the shape of physical things, things we can
touch and feel. Those are easy to recognize. Many times
they take the form of things we cannot touch and are much
harder to spot like pride, power, ego, time, comfort or
health.”

PRAYING FOR VOCATION “Jesus cleaned out the temple of money changers. He
was angry; He was zealous; He was authoritative. He was

danger, insult and wonder. Such is a vocation.”

ST. CATHERINE – REDWOOD FALLS & ST. JOHN – MORTON
From Fr. Steffl:
We had a nice turn out for the talk given by Deb Hadley last week for our Area Faith Enrichment Night on
Wednesday, February 21. I appreciated her comments on how we need to be very cautious regarding social media. I
have been giving this a lot of thought; social media has many good aspects, but it can also be very negative in its
effects on our lives. We are seeing people who now waste a lot of unnecessary time on it, some even developing
“addictions.” One parishioner, reflecting on this point from Deb’s talk, mentioned at the beginning of his career,
showing up for a meeting and chatting with coworkers, and he noted that now, everyone is looking at their phones
instead… Lent is a good time to, as the Lord says in the Gospel, “trimming our branches” when they grow out too
much, wherever they might be growing wild.
Last week, someone pointed out in a talk of the importance of godparents in encouraging their godchildren in
matters of the practice of the Faith. The speaker said it is important to know that a godparent was chosen to be more
than just an honorary witness or someone to give an extra gift at Christmas or on a birthday. Questions this speaker
proposed: Do I pray by name for my godchildren? Do I take an interest in their Faith lives? Do I ask them about their
Faith? Do I share my Faith with them? Am I willing to challenge them when they make decisions that are not going to
lead them to Jesus? The same would be good to apply to those who have been a Confirmation sponsor. These
questions seemed like good ones to pass on for consideration.

Individual Confession and Absolution Penitent may sit face-to-face with the priest or kneel behind the screen. The priest invites
the penitent to begin by praying aloud the Sign of the Cross:
Priest/Penitent: In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Penitent: Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. My last confession was ________.
These are my sins…(confess your sins)
When finished confessing your sins, say “For these and all the sins of my past, I am truly sorry”
(Priest will offer words of encouragement, a penance, and for penitent to pray the Act of Contrition
(there is one in the back of the Missalette) and pray the prayer of absolution.
Priest: “Give thanks to the Lord for He is good.”
Penitent: “His mercy endures forever.”
He will then say “Go in peace.” You respond with “Thanks be to God”…You can say “Thank you
Father”, if you want to when you leave.
