Philip Builds Macedonia’s Power
• Macedonia is north of Greece and under the leadership of Philip II-he defeats Greece
• He built a powerful army and cavalry that was unbeatable
• Philip is assassinated and his son Alexander III (called the Great) takes power

• Taught by the famous philosopher Aristotle• He is an excellent leader and soldier• He crushes a Greek revolt and in 334B.C. he
and his army invade Persia• The Macedonians defeat King Darius III at the

• Alexander conquers Egypt and then the rest of the Ancient Empire of Persia by 328B.C.
• The capital of Persia, Persepolis, is burned-signaling the total destruction of the Persian Empire

• Alexander conquers eastward all the way to India
• Alexander dies after contracting a fever upon his return to Persia
• His Empire is divided into 3 parts• His conquests spread Greek customs and
culture throughout the Middle East and Asia-it is called Hellenistic Culture and it is a blend of Greek, Egyptian, and eastern customs
