The Policy which Helped the Government, but Destroyed the Nation.
Today the global population is on a tremendous rise with todays habits. Some countries are
worried about the problems which may arise from having a high population number. China has even
enforced a strict policy called the One-Child Policy. This policy has been a widely controversial issue,
thrust into the limelight due to many of the different scenarios and opinions behind the scenarios. This
was emplaced to control population by limiting each family to only one child. But at what cost? Therepercussions of such a policy have led to many negative affects upon the Chinese populace. These
problems range from unfair consistency, to imprisonment of protestors and even forced abortions and
sterilizations upon women who choose to have more than one child. Chinas One-Child policy is wrong
and should be removed because it has caused a dangerous level of birth-sex ratio and has allows moral
corruption in the Chinese foundation.
Chinas one-child policy was emplaced by the Chinese government to control the exponentially
growing rate of the population growth. As stated before, this policy limits each family to one child, and
the enforcement of it is through various penalties, process (abortions, sterilization) and even the
removal of public services to the extra child or children (otherwise known as hei hazi or black
children). The policy did allow a better controlled population growth, but it has caused several negative
effects, one of which is the imbalanced birth-sex ratio. This 32 year old policys removal has beenconsidered, but for now, it is still active in Chinese policies.
The Chinese One-Child Policy has led to a dangerous level of the birth-sex ratio. The gender
imbalance among Chinese people in 2008 was 123 boys born for every 100 girls in rural areas, and the
national average stood at 120:100. The websitehttp://laogai.orgprovided this astonishing information.
It has also provided the reason behind this, which is to Chinese cultural tradition in which it is the duty
of a male to take care of the parents after they have grown up. This causes the parents to want to give
birth to a boy, possibly wanting to get rid of baby girls through abortions, abandoning them, or killing
them to be the parents of a boy. This ratio may also cause difficulties in fertility rates and has the chance
of destabilizing the Chinese societies to the 15% of men possibly not being able to form families. The
stabilization of the birth-sex ratio is important for the proper continuation of Chinas future, and the
immediate removal of the One-Child Policy can begin the repair necessary for this process.
Not only does the One-Child Policy affect drastically demographical features of China, but has
caused the nation to slowly degrade and corrupt in its moral and ethical standards. The desire of having
a boy over a girl has caused society to value boys over girls, thus creating the sexist treatment upon
baby girls even before they are even born. Some families may be so persistent on getting a boy instead
of a girl that they would go through many measures, including abortion, abandonment or even murder
after the baby girl is born to obtain the right to legally own a baby boy. Not only this, but the policy has
allowed the government to enforce the policy upon civilians with the most vague allegations and
accusations. An article by Rebecca Millette discusses how a single anti-one child policy activist was
arrested and sent to labor camps. *Mao+ Hengteng was sentenced to a year and a half of re-education
through labor for disturbing the public order merely by protesting the One-Child policy. She hassuffered brutal conditions and torture for voicing her opinion. To allow such a government to abusively
enforce their policy is an extreme degeneration of moral codes among the society and the government
itself. Forced abortions, sterilizations and other brutal acts must be all stopped for the sake of the
integrity and morality of the Chinese people. To do this, the One-Child Policy must be removed.
As one can see, the immediate removal of the Chinese One-Child policy is imperative to help
repair the dangerous level of the birth-sex ratio and reset the moral standards of the nation. The
dangerous level of the birth-sex ratio must be quickly balanced before irreparable damage may occur to

both the Chinese society and fertility rate. Also, the correction the immoral acts and conducts amongst
the Chinese population as stated before is imperative for the countrys stability and development. The
removal the One-Child Policy is the beginning for both of these statements to become a reality. The
One-Child Policy must be removed.
