World-Class Students Prepared for Life after High School Profile of a Virginia Graduate During each student’s K-12 experience in Virginia he/she will: Achieve and apply appropriate academic and technical knowledge Align knowledge, skills, and personal interests with career opportunities Attain and demonstrate productive workplace skills, qualities, and behaviors Build connections and value for interactions with diverse communities The Five C’s In preparing students to meet the Profile of a Virginia Graduate, schools are required to ensure that students develop the following competencies known as the “Five C’s”: • Critical thinking • Creative thinking • Communication • Collaboration • Citizenship Career Exploration and Planning The career-planning component of the Profile of a Virginia Graduate provides an opportunity for students to learn more about the employment options and career paths they first explored in elementary and middle school. By reducing the number of SOL tests students must pass to earn a diploma, the new standards increase flexibility for schools to expand work-based and service-learning programs that promote college, career, and civic readiness.

Graduation Requirements9th Grade Class of 2018-2019 and Beyond

Applied Studies Diploma – students must meet the goals outlined in the Individualized Education Program Additional Graduation Requirements: • Take and pass one advanced course or a CTE Credentialing exam • Take and pass one virtual course • Training in First Aid/AED/CPR**Students will be required to to take SOL end-of-course tests when enrolled in certain high school courses to meet both federal and graduation requirements. Once a student has met both of these requirements, he/she will not be administered further SOL end-of-course tests while enrolled in a public high school in Virginia.
