Project: Tuberculosis Health Action Learning Initiative (THALI)

THALI held a two-day intensive workshop focused on creating a strategy which aims to integrate TB into the agendas and functioning of strong community structures including self-help groups, youth associations, slum associations and labour unions, in order to ensure that TB elimination efforts sustain after the project period. The strategy is based on the values of sustainability, community centrality, inclusiveness and context-specificity, and will link other community structures that THALI currently works with, including Key Opinion Leaders, Health Information Centres and Patient Advocates, to existing community structures.

Sustaining TB control efforts through community structures

THALI formulated an approach to patient care and support which will prioritize the needs of seven of the most vulnerable populations at risk of poor treatment outcomes through a tailored package of services. These patients will be identified through the Risk and Needs Assessment conducted by the CHWs. The differentiated care model (DCM) covers patients with drug-resistant TB, patients living alone, elderly patients, patients with HIV infections or diabetes, and those consuming alcohol.

THALI also presented the DCM model at the USAID Health Marketplace, an event in New Delhi showcasing the innovations implemented by organizations to improve health outcomes in urban settings. Through this model and the offering of intensive treatment monitoring, follow-up and counselling, THALI aims to push successful treatment outcomes over the 90 percent mark.
