Winter on the Web: Snowflakes, holidays, crafts, celebration: It’s all here, just in time to bring in the season! Cross-curricular activities that use technology related to

this wonderful time of year to enhance your winter lessons.

Reading Workshops Popular Works of Poe: “Why will you say that I am mad?” Enter the fantastic yet

eerie world of Edgar Allan Poe to explore: “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Cask of Amontillado,” “The Raven,” “Annabel Lee,” and “The Bells.” Introduce your students to

one of America’s most gifted writers with four weeks of dreadfully interesting materials to excite and enhance your students’ studies.

popular short stories and an enchanting poem: “The Monkey’s Paw,” “The Phantom Coach,” “The Signalman,” and “The Highwayman.” This unit includes four weeks of

classroom-tested material that acquaints students with the development of plot, poetic devices, and a vast variety of literary techniques.

DRAMA: A Taste of Macbeth: Acquaint your students with just a touch of Shakespeare with a young reader’s study of one of his most popular

tragedies. The play begins with the wind moaning on the rain-battered heath. Neither sun nor moon shines through the gloom and no one knows

whether it is night or day. Students will enjoy acting out this opening witch scene along with the famous “Double, double toil and trouble” cauldron scene found in Act

IV Scene 1. A delightful study for Halloween or any other time of the year.

DRAMA: Creative Expression: In this class you’ll receive a wealth of material

intended to help students gain confidence to allow their creativity to soar. Introduce students to drama exercises, impromptu skits, improvisation situations, pantomimes,

and a variety of classic sketches including Lily Tomlin’s “Edith Ann” and “Ernestine,” Bob Newhart’s “Introducing Tobacco to Civilization,” Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s On

First?” Classic Civil War Stories: Offer a better understanding of the Civil War to your

students through two excellent examples of historical fiction. “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh” by Ray Bradbury and “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce

are classic short stories that are sure to be enjoyed by your students. Not only does this study help students enhance their comprehension of the Civil War, but it also

acquaints students with the development of plot and a vast variety of literary techniques.

Poetry in Music: Are you looking for a way to bring excitement into the study of poetry? Then this is the class for you. Using the lyrics to popular music, students learn

about rhyme scheme, sound devices, and a variety of literary techniques. Not only will

you receive an assortment of classroom-tested material, but also a Powerpoint presentation with 30 slides that feature lyrics from the Beatles. This workshop is held

in the Media Lab. Please enter the Fairfield doors just north of church and proceed upstairs.

Introduction to the Short Story: Introduce elements of classic literature through four delightful short stories: “A Man Who Had No Eyes,” “The Storyteller,” “The Fallen

Angel,” and “Rikki Tikki Tavi.” This unit includes four weeks of classroom-tested material that acquaints students with the development of plot and a vast variety of

literary techniques. The Call of the Wild: Jack London’s masterpiece of survival is a magnificent

adventure story and an excellent example of American literature. Young readers become immediately involved in Buck’s life from the moment he is kidnapped and

taken into a primitive environment that knows no law but the “law of club and fang.” Four weeks of classroom-tested material that captures the essence of this exciting

novel.

A Christmas Carol: “What’s Christmas time to you but a time for paying bills without money?” Bring Ebenezer Scrooge to life for your students as he goes through his

miraculous transformation. Four weeks of classroom-tested material that captures the essence of this Dickens’ masterpiece.

DRAMA: A Christmas Carol Play: Bring Charles Dickens’ classic novel to life with this delightful radio play. Using a play originally adapted for radio by Walter

Hackett, Nancy Roberts Garrity has embellished this drama by adding more characters and including more direct quotations from the novel. Because

this was written as a radio play, costumes and memorization of lines are optional. And those students that enjoy working behind the scenes can participate by rattling

Jacob Marley’s chains and adding sound effects.

IV Scene 1. A delightful study for Halloween or any other time of the year.
