Page 1 WORKSHOP PROPOSALS FOR THE CANADIAN IWA YWP CONFERENCE 2021 The organisers aim to deliver a programme with informative and impactful workshops that will complement the main scientific-technical, learning and networking sessions. If you have an idea for a workshop, please read the following definition, format, and instructions before you complete the proposal form and submit it via the abstract submission portal as soon as possible and no later than January 31, 2021. All proposals submitted will be reviewed based on criteria’s defined at the evaluation section and only the best will be selected. What is a workshop? A workshop is a meeting at which a group of people engage in intensive and constructive discussion and activities on a particular subject area or issue. There should ideally be a clear output from a workshop – a consensus that can be reported, a clear course of action (or guidelines) for similar problems, a new research programme or latest technology outlined, a best practice agreed, a disagreement resolved (or at least more clearly specified!). We also highly encourage problem-oriented case-studies as potential format for the proposed workshop. WORKSHOP PROPOSALS FOR THE CANADIAN IWA YWP CONFERENCE 2021The organisers aim to deliver a programme with informative and impactful workshops that will complement the main scientific-technical, learning and networking sessions.

A workshop is a meeting at which a group of people engage in intensive and constructive

discussion and activities on a particular subject area or issue.

Who can submit a workshop proposal? Organisations (with at least one Young Water Professional (YWP) in the organization) YWP Chapters who are interested Young water professionals (Individuals from 2-3 different institutions in a session) Other young networks

How will this be happening virtually? We recommend using Zoom with breakout rooms to make your workshop the most engaging You may use your own Zoom account, or contact us if you need assistance with that Maximum 3 hours per workshop, but a workshop may be any length from 1-3 hours

Preferred workshop length is 2.5 hours

What facilitation method do we find acceptable for a workshop? There should be a clear distinction between workshops and the scientific-technical sessions of the Conference: workshops will not be approved if they simply replicate the full oral presentation sessions of the main programme. Possible methods to include:

Roundtable discussions - Suitable for more informal discussions, but can start with a short (max 10 min) scene-setting presentation and end with a plenary reflection or feedback. This is effective for the exchange of information and experiences among small groups of people.

World Café Style - World Café methodology is a simple, effective, and flexible format for hosting large group dialogue

Individual/ group exercises – Through interactive exercises/ games, and or use of stakeholder engagement tools a multi-disciplinary audience can be brought together around a particular topic/ issue to develop a solution.

Case-study: Using existing situations to feed targeted discussions can be very instructive to tackle more general and multidisciplinary challenges.

Hands-on exercises – Engaging in an exercise which provides avenue for the participants to explore a specific technology through the actual products( i.e a data management software, NRW detection instrument etc)

Panel discussion with Audience intervening (only accepted to open or close a session) - A moderated panel discussion between experts focused on a particular issue, where audience questions are incorporated. Generally, there is not a great amount of interaction with the audience through this method, but it can be useful in helping open or close a discussion session.

Other: We will consider any other workshop format that is innovative and facilitates lively and constructive discussion of an issue

Note: A session with more than 1/3 of the time spent on oral presentations will not be approved Note: conference organizers will provide the virtual venue for this workshop. Assume that breakout

rooms, polls, reactions, and all usual virtual engagement tools can be used.

Which topics are best suited to a workshop? The workshops can address a wide variety of subject matter, but should at minimum pave way towards ‘Inspiring Minds for Creative Water Solutions’ and within the themes of the conference.

Workshops work well for:- subject areas that are new, complex (problems), rapidly evolving, potentially controversial,

interdisciplinary, or in other circumstances in which discussion better contributes to delivering an output.

- Discussing emerging issues or give early warning of future ones.

Evaluation criteriaIYWPC desire to host only the highest-quality workshops and is reinforced by the limited space available on the programme. We may also ask that compatible proposals be combined into a single joint workshop.
