Workshop „Assessment of environmental impacts from the production and use of biomethane“ Stefan Majer, Maik Budzinski
Kick-off BIOSURF, Vienna 27/02/2015
What are we going to do in BioSurf I
• The GHG reduction certification is an important topic within the BioSurf project. Within this topic we will address a number of issues:
1. How big are the potential emission savings from Biogas/Biomethane production and use?
Müller-Langer et al. Energy, Sustainability and Society 2014,
What are we going to do in BioSurf II
• The GHG reduction certification is an important topic within the BioSurf project. Within this topic we will address a number of issues:
2. What are the biggest drivers of emissions and what could be done to reduce them?

What are we going to do in BioSurf III
• The GHG reduction certification is an important topic within the BioSurf project. Within this topic we will address a number of issues:
3. Develop a set of simple and robust recommendations for a GHG calculation methodology suitable for biomethane.

What are your experiences and what is your specific interest in this area?
What are important challenges and opportunities to address?

Welcome to the workshop on environmental impact assessment
• What are your experiences with LCAs for Biogas/Biomethane production and use?
• What are the most interesting scoping questions from your point of view?
• biggest drivers, • env. impacts, • most preferable use of biomethane, • optimisation, • etc.
Questions for the Workshop I
• What are the most pressing issues and challenges with regards to GHG-calculations that should be addressed within the Biosurf project?
- methodology- data- ??
• What kind of products would be helpful for you? What do you expect?
- guidelines- focus on specific issues (manure, methane leakage,
reference syst., etc.)?
Questions for the Workshop II
• Anything else??

Data Methodology (acc. to EU RED)
- potential methane emission reduction due to processing of:
- allocation of by-products,
• organic waste, - credits for avoided emissions,
• agricultural by-products (incl. manure),
- emission factors,
- methane leakage, - etc.
- substitution of mineral fertiliser,
discussion of best available data and highlighting further need for research
recommendations for the adaptation of the RED GHG calculation methodology
