African Agricultural Technology Foundation

• The AATF is a not-for-profit organisation that facilitates and promotes public/private partnerships for the access and delivery of appropriate agricultural technologies (e.g. new plant varieties) for sustainable use by smallholder farmers in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) through innovative partnerships and effective stewardship along the entire value chain.

New Plant Varieties

• A breeder’s right shall be granted in respect of plant varieties of those genera or species where the variety is new, distinct, uniform, stable, and given a variety denomination which is acceptable for registration.

Water Efficient Maize for Africa (WEMA) Project

• The WEMA Project represents an innovative approach based on forging

collaborations between the public and private sectors in order to identify, develop and deliver proprietary technologies (new plant varieties) that would otherwise be unavailable to address the constraints of drought and insect pests facing farmers in SSA.

• The Project has an improved grain yield of 4-5t/ha (45-55 bags of 90kg size on average) under optimal conditions.

Cassava Mechanization and Agro-processing Project (CAMAP)

• Increase farmers access and use of cassava mechanization and new plant varieties in order to increase productivity and efficiency of operations, reduce drudgery and postharvest losses, and promote value addition thereby contributing to food

security and wealth creation of cassava farmers in SSA.

• Cassava productivity under the Project has doubled the current yields from 10 tonnes to at least 20 tonnes per hectare.

Conclusion

• The WEMA and CAMAP Projects have shown that the promotion of new plant varieties enhances agricultural productivity and food security in SSA including for female farmers and agribusiness women.
