Lesson 19
Where’s My Lunch?Because you cannot tell when your food actually enters or exits a particular part of the digestive system, you have to estimate, or make a good guess. This exercise will help make you more aware of what your food is doing for you.
Location Estimated time entered Estimated time exited
Mouth Enter the time you took the first bite as the time entered and the time you swallowed the last bite of your lunch as the time exited.
Esophagus Food spends about 10 seconds in your esophagus.
Stomach Food can spend 2–3 hours here. If you ate peanut butter and jelly or lunch meat, estimate 3 hours.
Small intestine It takes food about 8 hours to pass through this long tube.
Large intestine It takes 24–48 hours for food to pass through this 4–5-foot long tube.
