INTRODUCTION

We are happy to provide you with this packet of visuospatial & attention worksheets for use with your patients.

The worksheets included are based on exercises that were developed by a team of cognitive science professionals including a neurologist, neuropsychologist, and several doc-tors in cognitive psychology.

Clinicians (including occupational therapists, neuropsychologists, speech-language patholo-gists, facilitators, etc.) can use these worksheets to help patients with various medical condi-tions in a variety of settings including rehabilitation centers, clinics, hospitals, mental health facilities, private practices, schools, nursing homes, community service centers, etc.

This packet includes several exercises to train visuospatial functions, also known as mental imagery. Visuospatial functions allow us to orient objects in space, perceive the objects of our environment and to organize them into a coherent visual scene. This function also allows us to mentally place objects that are physically absent. Mental imagery is present in our thought processes, problem-solving, strategy, memorization, and recognizing images that are abnor-mally orientated. This skill is applied in your daily life when you visualize the distance between various objects, and when you recall the location of an address that someone is describing.

You can use these worksheets to work with your patients or residents individually or in groups. In group sessions, some exercises can be done by a single person, and others can be offered to the entire group or require the cooperation of everyone.

These worksheets can be a fun way to stimulate cognitive functions. Finding engaging exercis-es is an important part of creating an effective therapeutic strategy since it will keep the patient motivated for continuing these sessions.

We hope you can use these worksheets fully with your patients.

Cognitive Remediation is a cerebral training method based on therapeutic support with a specific cognitive training program adapted to the patient’s disorder. The primary goal is to help reduce cognitive deficits by building and improving on cognitive skills so that they can transfer them to everyday life. These deficits commonly include attention, memory, and executive function disorders. If you utilize cognitive remediation effectively with your patients, they can experience a positive impact on functional skills which effects everyday life.

Remediation

COGNITIVE THERAPY

Cognitive rehabilitation is a specific term frequently used for cognitive training after neurological complications. The goal of cognitive rehabilitation is to restore cognitive functions, create compen-satory strategies and improve the patient’s living conditions. After an accident, cognitive rehabilita-tion therapy is a crucial part of stroke and traumatic brain injury treatment. This process often involves relearning cognitive skills that were lost. If these skills cannot be relearned, new ones are taught to help a patient compensate for their loss. An important part of reworking cognitive skills is the use of cognitive stimulation. When a patient stimulates a particular ability, this will help train them to find different skills used to carry out a specific task. The ultimate goal for your patient is to restore the quality of life they had before their accident. Through the use of cognitive rehabilitation, you can help them live independently again.

Cognitive Rehabilitation

Cognitive stimulation is a general term that refers to an ensemble of cognitive training methods. Stimulation can help patients to age well and is also used to help ease the cognitive effects of neuro-degenerative pathologies such as Alzheimer disease.

Aging is responsible for the progressive decline of cognitive functions. The concept of aging well is fundamental to increasing the length and quality of life. Aging well promotes personal behaviors that limit functional declines, especially those caused by chronic conditions, to help older adults maintain their independence and health. A critical domain of aging well is cognitive functioning, especially the cognitive effectiveness necessary to maintain the daily activities associated with overall health.

Cognitive stimulation can also be used to help ease the cognitive effects of various neurodegenera-tive pathologies, including Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. By exercising the memory in patients with neurodegenerative pathologies, you can help stimulate neuroplasticity and prevent future memory loss.

WHAT DO THE WORKSHEETS TRAIN?

PRIVATE EYESpot the figure among like figures in Private Eye. In Private Eye, you will use sustained attention, concentration and visual scanning to identify the figure. This worksheet includes a series of six exercises at various levels. Set a timer for one minute or less to make this exercise more difficult for your advanced patients.

TURN AROUND & AROUNDUse your skills of visual mental imagery and mental rotation to determine which shape does not match the other two. In Turn Around & Around, you will see three similar 3D geometric shapes at various angles and must spot which one is not the same as the other two.

SAME OR DIFFERENTDo the patterns on the right match the patterns on the left? In Same or Different, it is your job to determine if these patterns match. By comparing the groups of characters, your working memory is exercised. Attention is stressed in this exercise since even one variation of the pattern determines whether the groups will match or not.

WATCH OUT!Work on visual scanning and concentration with Watch Out. In Watch Out, you will analyze a pattern of images and answer a series of questions about the images shown. This exercise will help you to develop strategies for remembering the placement of the items.

SLEIGHT OF HANDSCan you easily spot whether each image shows the left or right hand? In Sleight of Hands, that is exactly what you will do. In this exercise, a series of eight hands are shown alone or performing various tasks, at different angles. You will use mental rotation to identify whether each hand shown is either the left or right.
