    The institute will strive to be among the top ten medical colleges in India inthe spheres of medical education, research and health care services. Addedto this 1000 bed Dr.Prabhakar Kore Charitable Hospital and three PrimaryHealth Centres and one urban Health centre will be the epicenters of postgraduate and under graduate training, wherein patients are treated free and

    exclusively meant for training the post graduate and under graduate in theirbasic knowledge and skills.

    The extreme shortage of medical facilities in the region, promoted the KLESociety to establish the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College at Belgaum in1963. The J N Medical College, Belgaum, stands testimony to the highprofessional standards aimed for and achieved by the KLE Society. Underthe able guidance and mature insight of the Founder Dean, Late Dr. B.S.Jirge,the foundation of the present academic vastness was laid. Eminent medicaleducationist, late Dr.B.S. Desai and Dr. M.Basavaraj Urs headed theinstitutions as principals during the first decade.

    Dr.S.G.Desai took over the reigns of the institution in 1971. Hisdistinguished tenure between 1971 and 1985 was marked by theachievement of high standards of discipline, decorum, and academicexcellence.Dr.H.B.Rajshekhar assumed the office of the principal in 1985. During histenure; the college saw vast growth in infrastructure and learningresources. He contributed substantially in the up coming ofthe KLE Hospital and MRC, Department of Medical Educaiton, Digital Libraryand collaboration with theUniversity of Illinois, USA. These ideas were

    conceived and realized during his tenure. Welfare and student supportamenities were given a great emphasis by him.Since August, 2002, Dr.V.D.Patil MD,DCH took over the reigns as Principal. Hehas taken the onerous responsibility when the field of higher medicaleducation was going through the effects of Globalization.The college is recognized by the Medical Council of India and has a 1000bedded free charitable block as well as the 1000 bedded Dr. Prabhakar KoreHospital & Medical Research Centre on campus. Both these facilities exposethe medical students to a holistic approach to medical science and itspractice, in both rural and urban areas. The college also runs a rural hospital- Dr. Kamal Medical Centre, 150 KMs away at Ankola.The sprawling 100 acre campus has excellent infrastructure, such as state-of-the art labs, equipments, as well as other facilities that collectivelyprovide a professional environment.

    The J.N.Medical College, Belgaum has total faculty strength of 520, which

    The first Chancellor of the University Dr. Prabhakar B. Kore, who has been the chairman of KLES

    for the past 25 years , has a very versatile personality and his diverse interests have seen him taking up

    varied roles in the fields of politics, education, agriculture, co-operative endeavor and community

    building. Today under his able leadership KLE Society has 204 Institutions, in which 7000 dedicated &motivated faculty is serving and over 75,000 students have enrolled for various courses ranging from

    The establishment of an 820 bedded, free (charitable) teaching hospital in addition to the 1000

    A University is a place of intense academic activities and pure administrators will not be

    able to understand the intricacies, intrigues and demands of academics, whereas academic

    scholars will usually falter in administration. This is the dilemma which most of the Universities face.

    KLE University has rightly appointed Dr. P. F. Kotur as First Registrar who has over 30 years of

    professional experience in academic, clinical, research and administrative fields. He is a prominent

    figure in the field of Anaesthesia, the first Indian to be elected as Executive Committee member of

    World Federation of Society of Anaesthesiologists, and was the President of Indian Society of

    Anaesthesiologists and also was the editor of national journal, Indian Journal of Anaesthesia (IJA).

    Presently he is the editor of SAARC Journal of Anaesthesia. His dynamism goes a long way and

    Dr. V. D. Patil -MD, DCH

    Dr. V.D.Patil joined as a Lecturer in the Department of Paediatrics at J N Medical College,

    Belgaum in March 1976. Since then he has been involved with the college in various capacities for

    the last 33 years, and has been the Principal of -J N Medical College, Belgaum, since August 2002.

    He is the Chief Pediatrician at Dr. KLES PKH & MRC, Belgaum, since its inception in 1987

    and Coordinator K L E S City Polyclinic, Belgaum.Dr.V.D.Patil has been awarded the WHO,

    Fellowship in M.C.H. Programme.

    UNIQUE ACHIEVEMENTS

    President of Pediatric Intensive care, Karnataka Chapter for 2007-2009

    Examiner for both, Under-graduate and Post-graduate students of various Universities.

    Initiated the concept of Neonatal care in the Belgaum region of North Karnataka in 1976, bystarting a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, at District Hospital, Belgaum, which has witnessedan enormous growth and is instrumental in starting the state of the art Neonatal IntensiveCare Unit at KLES Hospital and Medical Research Centre.

    Instrumental in developing the World Health Organization concept of Baby Friendly Hospitalin the Belgaum region of North Karnataka and has got recognition for both the hospitalsi.e. District Hospital, Belgaum and K L E S Hospital & MRC Belgaum in 1996.

    He was deputed by the KLE Society to the University of Illinois, Chicago U.S.A. for trainingin the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. With this background, a well equipped PediatricIntensiveCare Unit has been established, which caters to the need of Critical care children in theBelgaum region, indeed, the first of its kind in North Karnataka.

    He was further instrumental in starting one of the first Perinatal Centre at KLES
