Deferring a Dream Literary Sub-Versions of the American Columbiad

1994. 160 pages. Softcover ISBN 3-7643-5022-9

The essays collected in this volume foreground the hegemonic and power-related aspects of some basic New World dreams: the dream of discovering a terra incognita, the dream of gaining dominion over a virgin land, the dream behind the making of the United States.

The focus of the contributions is on Native American, Caribbean, AfricanAmerican, Jewish-American, and New Zealand texts that highlight the contrast between the reality of colonization and exploitation, and its ideological frame work; and question the rhetoric of such texts as Columbus' Diario and Franklin's Autobiography. Inevitably, gender issues occupy a central place in the book.

The original forum for most of the papers was a workshop the editors convened at the 1992 Seville conference of the European Association for American Studies (EAAS), which was devoted in its entirety to the «American Columbiad».

Subjecthood and Related Notions A Contrastive Study of English, German and Japanese

1992. 236 pages. Softcover ISBN 3-7643-2740-5

Is the grammatical notion of «subject» universally valid? The author considers this question with special reference to English, German and Japanese. After a brief examination of various approaches to grammatical relations, the author presents his own view that «subject» is a cross-language category and not a universal one; he then demonstrates this in a study of simple ac-tive sentences in his chosen languages. The following chapters deal with different realizations of «subject» in the three languages in passive, copular, existential, extraposed and postponed sentences. Special mention is made of the particles wa and ga and of «multiple-subject» sentences in Japanese.

The author argues for the importance of comparing language-specific characteristics in any examination of the notion of «subject» in a cross-linguistic context.

In the Zone Perception and Presentation of Space in German and American Postmodernism

1991. 224 pages. Softcover ISBN 3-7643-2696-4

In the Zone introduces us to a new way of looking at postmodernist liter-ature. In his transatlantic perspective, Hugo Caviola includes both German and American literature and sheds new light on such renowned contem-porary authors as Peter Handke, Thomas Pynchon, Wolfgang Hildesheimer, Raymond Federman, Marlen Haushofer, Jerzy Kosinski, Walker Percy and William Gaddis.

Caviola defines Postmodernism by its emphasis on space. The notion of the Zone integrates physical space with a fascinating variety of literary spa-tialities. The book leads us to understand how postmodernist literature can provide a means of orientation in our electronically permeated culture.
