Musculoskeletal Consumer Review or MCR is Core Concepts’s online journal. Musculoskeletal conditions for the layman can often be confusing with a myriad of answers and explanations. Answers found on the internet tend to swing between being too simplistic but easy to understand or accurate but difficult to digest. MCR aims to bridge this gap. MCR also published hardcopies of selected articles for GP and Specialists clinics.

Posture – More than Standing TallWorkshop/Seminar
Synopsis Today, some studies have shown that up to 50% of the working population suffers from back and neck aches and pains, up from some 33% 10 years ago. This increasing trend, sadly, is a result of our oddly sedentary, yet hectic and stressfilled lifestyles. For how many of us does this scenario strike a familiar chord sitting at our desk for hours on end, barely moving, with the exception of our fingers, pounding away at the keyboards of our computers, solving one issues after another? Most of us are aware that adopting a good posture helps in reducing such aches and pains. Few however, are aware of the complex interplay of the body’s postural structures and systems. We will explore these various systems, how they each affect the stability of your body’s core, and ultimately your posture and its impact on back and neck aches and pains. Together with a better understanding of these delicate systems, you will also learn some exercises that helps strengthen and improve your core’s stability and control.

Synopsis Today, some studies have shown that up to 50% of the working population suffers from back and neck aches and pains, up from some 33% 10 years ago. This increasing trend, sadly, is a result of our oddly sedentary, yet hectic and stressfilled lifestyles.
Needless to say, it is important to minimise the strain our bodies put with up on a daily basis. Our bodies have two sources of support one external (Ergonomics) and other internal (postural).

Developed in the 190s by Brian Mulligan, a physiotherapist from New Zealand, this set of techniques is used by physiotherapists around the world as part of a their treatment protocols. A subset of these techniques such as selfSNAGS are often taught by physiotherapists to their clients. SNAGS are mobilization techniques to help relief stiffness of the spinal joints.
This 0minute workshop, designed to provided the participants with an understanding of the basis of the techniques, is divided into two parts:
Overview of the Mulligan’s techniques (15 minutes)Practical handson tutorial (45 minutes)

Office Ergonomics Principles for Healthcare LeadersWorkshop/Seminar
Synopsis While ergonomics is often understood to be important, organisations are just often at a loss on how to implement sound ergonomic policies. Every equipment vendor claims to be have ergonomically designed equipment or to provide the best ergonomic supports.. While this is likely to be true, it clearly does not gel with the fact that ergonomics is meant to fit around the users, not the other round. Each piece of equipment or furniture cannot fit around everyone given the range of differences between each human body.
This seminar helps healthcare leaders within an organisation to:
Understand the basic ergonomic principlesWhat is behind these principles and the consequences of failing to adhere to themErgonomics in practiceUnderstand that ergonomic often require tradeoffs; which ones to make and whenSolutions to common problems.

Sports Injury Management
Sports Injury Management (Athletes)Workshop/Seminar
Synopsis It is common knowledge that with any sports, there is always a risk of injury. At the same time, performance and enjoyment of any sports can be marred by an injury. Knowing what to do when an injury happens can be crucial to better recovery and eventual return to the sport.
With our youths getting more active, it is advisable for them to learn more about taking proper care of their injuries to maximise the benefits of an active lifestyle. When an injury has been managed appropriately, it promotes better recovery and a safe return to sports. In addition, preventive management like sports taping and rehabilitative exercises helps to lower the risk of a recurrent injury. In this module, participants will learn basic principles of sports injury prevention and management. These include management concepts such as TOTAPS assessment, R.I.C.E.R, H.A.R.M as well as preventive exercises and sports taping for the shoulder, wrist, thumb, fingers, knee and ankle.
This module does not certify the students to administer firstaid nor give advice on rehabilitation. At the end of this module, students will be able to:
Appreciate the principles of sports injury managementAppreciate the principles of sports injury prevention and rehabilitationAppreciate the role of sports taping in prevention and rehabilitation of sports injuryDemonstrate an assessment of a sports injuryDemonstrate proficiency in using an injury record formDemonstrate proficiency in sports taping

Sports Injury Management
Basic Sports TapingWorkshop/Seminar
Synopsis Sports taping can prevent injury or facilitate an injured athlete’s return to competition. In general, the tape should limit the abnormal or excessive movement of a sprained joint while also providing support to the muscles that the sprain has compromised. Many, clinicians attribute the value of taping to the enhanced proprioceptive feedback that the tape provides the athlete during performance. For example, athletes who have injured the anterior cruciate ligament and suffer from rotary instability in the knee may receive sensory cues from the brace before it limits rotary movement.
This early proprioceptive feedback may enable the athlete subconsciously to contract the muscle that control rotary instability. Similarly athletes involved in volleyball and basketball may receive sensory cues from a taped ankle. Tape, in this instance, can be more effective in providing proprioceptive feedback than actually limiting excessive inversion
Purpose of taping:Support the ligaments and capsule of unstable joints by limiting excessive or abnormal anatomical movement. Enhance proprioceptive feedback from the limb or joint Support injuries to the muscletendon units by compressing and limiting movement Secure protective pads, dressing and splints
The course covers taping principles and includes a significant amount of practical training. Sports tapes will be provided to each participant. Some of the key body areas covered in the course include the ankle, knee (patella tendon and medial collateral ligament/MCL), fingers and thumb.

Most types of exercises can be enjoyable if done right and most times, injuries can be prevented. Progression of an exercise is the key in preventing injuries and recognising signs of distress might improve one’s chance of survival and to continue to enjoy exercising.
In this module, participants will learn about :F.I.T.T Rule (Calculating optimal Heart Rate while exercising, recommended exercises, etc..)Simple exercise progression (using a simple measure of RPE)Taking one’s pulse Simple warmup and cool down routines Simple strengthening exercises

Managing Pain For Arthritic Knee Workshop/Seminar
Synopsis Arthritis of the knee is the most common type of osteoarthritis (OA). It is one of the common causes of disability in Singapore. OA knee is associated with damage to the articular cartilage. The condition is caused by:
Previous knee injuryRepetitive strain of the kneeFractures, ligament tear and meniscal injury which can affect alignment and promote wear and tearGenetics which make some people more likely to develop knee osteoarthritisObesityProblems with the subchondral bone
OA knee cannot be cured but there are treatments available to help manage the symptoms. Exercise is one of the recommended forms of treatment. It helps to maintain joint health and prevent its progression. This is because exercise helps to lubricate and nourish the joint surface. Specific leg exercises can strengthen the muscles supporting the knees therefore providing reinforcement to the failing internal shock absorber.
Workshop highlights:How exercise can help reduce arthritic related pain? What type of exercises are suitable for people with arthritis? What kind of effect does exercise have on OA knee?Is it normal to experience pain during exercise?

Falls among the elderly often result in fractures, usually in the hips or wrists., particularly for people with osteoporosis. Older adults with sustained fractures normally have a long stay in the hospital. This can result in a loss of confidence, fear of falling and reduced independence. Although falls rarely results in death directly, death do occur as a result of complications due to falls.
Preventing falls is not an easy task. The causes of falls are varied and complex. However, there are a great number of simple and practical things that can be done to reduce the risk.
