Culture Club (CC) is a fun club for all BSNL children aged between 6 and 18. We meet every Saturday
(10 sessions per school term), between 2:30 and 4:30pm, at BSNL house. During our sessions, children
learn about: Hindu and Gujarati culture, history and religion, during ‘topic time’ The Gujarati
language Gujarati/Hindu music and songs (bhajans, garbas, aartis, lok-geet, etc) in a relaxed, friendly
environment.
We charge £20 for 10 weeks, which goes towards paying for our resources as well as a snack, which
children enjoy together each week. Do encourage your children to join us! For more information on the
club, to enrol your child or to offer your services,

BSNL Elders Group (eGroup)
All is running smoothly with our elders enjoying themselves every Tuesday with Bhajan, Bhojan and
Manoranjan and Thursday morning doing Yoga for the elderly to keep fit.
This year we have introduced eSangeet classes from 4:15 to 6:00 pm every Tuesday after our eGroup
session under Padmaben Bhatt who is an Indian Classical Music Graduate (including having done her
Visarad), and she is a qualified Music Teacher also. We are very fortunate to have her in our eGroup
who is volunteering her services for free to us.
Our ethos is to make sure that our elderly members get a good outing full of fun, entertainment,
education and a good lunch in a comfortable atmosphere amongst friends every Tuesday when they
attend our eGroup sessions. We want to give them a good time and make them feel good. And we are
lucky to have a solid team of volunteers who are eager to help do just that.
This year we are planning take our elders by coach for a picnic to a sea side resort some time in
summer when the weather is good. We are also planning a holiday tour of Eastern Europe for our
eGroup (details to follow).
For more information or if you wish to donate lunch for our elders on any Tuesday please contact:

BSNL Porta-Cabin Replacement Project
Our Open Day on 4th March 2017 for our members to find out more about this project went well and we will
continue in this way to keep you informed.
While getting planning permission was a challenge, raising funds is now our bigger challenge where we
need your full support to succeed.
This project is about replacing our aging porta-cabin with a brand new purpose built 2 storey building in its
place to benefit all our members and provide better facilities for our various subgroups including our
Childrens Culture Club, Young Brahmins, Club 30-60, Abhilasha and our Elders Group and to create an
expanded landscaped car park also. Our main building will continue to be hired out as a Montessori during
week days and it will also get a face lift and be refurbished in due course.
Replacing our porta-cabin with a purpose built 2 storey building is a £450k project. We have more than half
the funds already. We need the balance of around £215k. We are working hard to obtain a Big Lottery
Grant - which is proving difficult as they give grants to projects in deprived areas which we do not fall under.
We are also exploring a bank loan possibility from The Charities Aid Foundation Bank. And we are pursuing
several other fund raising avenues including: Taking Private Members Loans, Seeking Donations, Doing
Sponsored Events, Organising Fund Raising Programmes, Promoting our Hall for extra Hire Income,
Reclaiming Tax via Gift Aid, etc.
Borrowing John F Kennedy's famous quote: “My fellow brahmins, ask not what your samaj can do for you,
ask what you can do for your samaj.” Any help you can give us will be highly appreciated.
For more information please contact:
Mr Vinod Mehta

Apprenticeships
Our Indian Community must become familiar with the great benefits of Apprenticeships. This is the modern
way for our children to learn and benefit through actual work based learning in most areas. Become a
professional through apprenticeships.
The Benefits Did you know there are over 600-800 apprenticeship standards or as we would call it areas of study linked to work. The curriculum areas covered are now very wide. From engineering, manufacturing, digital / IT. Sales and Marketing. Law and Accountancy. An apprentice can learn at GCSE right through to Degree level. An apprentice degree and traditional degree are the same and hold the same value.
BSNL, 128 East Lane, North Wembley, HA0 3NL.
Newsletter 2 - Apr 2017 8
Did you know if you learn through an apprenticeship programme, you are also earning through your salary. As apprentices, must be employed whilst studying and employers are very keen to secure new staff as apprentices. This is of great value to the apprentice and he /she’s family. As in comparison to a traditional degree where the student and family must pay large annual tuition fees and associated costs. If you do a degree apprenticeship the student benefits by: i) Not having to pay for the study as it is paid for by the employer and the apprentice is also earning a wage.
ii) So after 3 years of a degree apprentice programme the student and family will be better off by over £60,000 (this includes salary and employer paying tuition fees). And there is no worry about finding work as you will have already been working over the three years before graduating. iii) Chances of Promotion within your workplace will be more accessible.
Apprenticeships are not limited by age, with the new scheme even Managers in employment can complete apprenticeships do further progress their skills leading to the Board room.
If you like to participate in assisting BSNL to establish and assist our members then please complete the
following Questionnaire details and send it to Gunwant Dave at BSNL Community Centre 128 East Lane
