The act was brought in to protect all people at work and all people who could be affected by work activities.
It is Criminal law and carries penalties such as fines or imprisonment

Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 Employers Responsibilities
To ensure the health, safety and welfare of all employees, by:
Providing and maintaining safe plant and safe systems of work
To ensure safe handling, storage and transport of articles and substances
To provide information instruction training and supervision to ensure health and safety at work
To provide safe access and egress at all times To provide and maintain a safe place of work and
working environment

Health & Safety at Work Act 1974Employees Responsibilities
Every employee whilst at work shall take reasonable care of their own Health and Safety and the safety of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions.
To cooperate with their employer so far as is necessary to ensure a safe working environment (to abide by the rules)
No person should intentionally or recklessly interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interest of Health, Safety or welfare
