Flexible Working

A flexible working environment has different types of work areas within it:

1. Hot Desk- a workstation, equipped with standard equipment, which may be used by employees who need to visit the organisation to undertake some work

2. Touch-Down Areas – used by employees who require to make a brief visit to the office eg to send an email or fax

3. Carrels – small booths where an employee works on his/her work, allows privacy to work undisturbed

Alternatives to 9-5, permanent contracts

1. Job-sharing – employees share a full-time job between them. Each employee is paid a proportion of the full-time salary. Not suitable for all types of employment eg senior management posts

2. Flexitime – employees are given some flexibility in organising their starting and finishing times – allows employees to start/leave early or late or take a longer lunch-break. Should improve timekeeping, rush-hour traffic can be avoided.

3. Homeworking/Teleworking – employees work at home for some or all of the time. Suitable for jobs where an employee spends a great deal of time working on a computer. Work which is undertaken at home and transmitted to the employer using ICT equipment and phone links is known as teleworking.

activities to be carried out by an outside company.•Allows organisation to concentrate on their core activities.

•Organisation doing the outsourced work will have more expertise and produce more professional work.

•Fewer staff needed.

•Can save organisation money.
