EDUC X210 DESCRIPTIONThis is an opportunity for students to inventory and expand their knowledge of the career development process. We will investigate how and why we make the decisions we do about our future and the world of work. Students will not be given easy solutions, but will be asked to seek optimum methods through self-examination and exploration. This should be considered a personal growth and development course. Students should have FUN learning together in this class!

COURSE OBJECTIVESIn this course you will have the opportunity to evaluate your values, interests, personal style, and skills in relation to the world of work. We will look at the entire career planning process, all the way from choosing a major at IPFW to learning more about occupations, from making a decision that is best for you to writing resumes and cover letters and conducting a job search. Specific student learning goals of the course include:

Define goals for your career decision-making process and demonstrate progress toward achieving those goals.

Expand awareness of your personal characteristics, interests, skills, and values as a basis for career exploration and decision making.

Increase knowledge of majors, careers, and career paths open to you. Integrate knowledge of self with knowledge of careers in narrowing your career

decisions. Use career information resources for career exploration and decision making. Develop your ability to make a well-thought-out career decision and choice of an

appropriate college major. Understand career development as a LIFELONG PROCESS.

ATTENDANCEAttendance is crucial in a high involvement class. If you are not able to make it to class, we appreciate a phone call or email PRIOR to class. Absences with prior notification (phone call or email) will be excused. If no prior notification is given then it’s

considered unexcused. Every unexcused absence will result in a 34-POINT DEDUCTION from your total points at the end of the semester and will seriously affect your grade. Note: there are no exams in this class and attendance is the only way to ensure material is learned.

NOTICEThe instructors reserve the right to alter the syllabus as needed. Thus, it is very important that you are in class every day to know about any changes. If you are not, you are responsible for getting that information, so we highly recommend that you exchange numbers or emails with a classmate.

LATE ASSIGNMENT POLICYAssignments will be collected at the beginning of class. If you are unable to make it to class, please either email the assignment, submit it via Blackboard, or drop it off at the reception desk in Career Services by class time on the day that it is due. If an assignment is late there will be a 10% deduction from the assignment grade for every day until it is turned in. The instructor reserves the right to request supporting documents if an extension is requested by a student.

DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS / PAPERS

Personal Reflection Paper, History Map and YouTube Video – Due August 31stThis paper and timeline is designed to help clarify to some degree your life goals or personal mission, and how these things might impact your educational and career decisions. This paper and timeline will help you assess what is important to you, special gifts/talents/tools you possess or have developed, and goals that you are striving for. This paper and timeline will take a great deal of reflection, and you may find it helpful to talk with people who know you well as you complete it. You may not completely identify your educational or career path, but the hope is that you will begin to more clearly identify things that are important, and recognize the skills and resources you need to achieve your life goals and mission. Don’t expect to come up with a specific occupation or career from this paper. The video is a fun way to share your personality with the class and further explore your interests. You do not have to create the video, simply find one that represents you. 125 Points. Information Interview Paper – Due November 16 th This assignment is used to help you gather information about a particular career and the overall industry you are interested in. You will need to identify two (2) organizations and/or people with whom you would like to speak to based on your area of career exploration. Family members, friends, significant others, and/or advisors are unacceptable people to interview for this paper. Feel free to use your family members, friends, etc. as resources to finding someone appropriate to interview. Once you have found two people to interview, and they have been approved by the instructor, you will do an informational interview with each individually. After the interviews, you will write a 3-4 page reflection paper commenting on your thoughts, feelings, and reactions to the information you obtained as it applies to your personal strengths, work values, interests, aptitude, abilities, and your occupational decision. You will also compare and contrast your two interviews. Worth 150 points.

Information Interview Presentation – Due November 16 th & 18 th The information interview presentations will be 3-5 minutes in length and will present your findings from the information interview to the class. I’d like for you to tell me who

you interviewed, why, what their position is, some key information that you gained about the job during the interview, and how you feel now about the career field you were researching through this interview. You may also include your feelings/thoughts about the interviewer themselves—did they try to skew the information to draw you in or turn you off from that career, and how did that impact your thoughts about pursuing that occupation. The professional you are going to interview must be directly related to a career you are considering, but you cannot use a family member, significant other, advisor, or friend—I want you to have information that is as unbiased as possible. If you don’t have any contacts, you MUST let me know by October 7th so that I can assist you in finding an IPFW alum to interview in your tentative or chosen career field. Follow the rubric guidelines and discuss all areas fully to gain the full 50 points.

Career Exploration Paper – Due November 30 th Through this 3 to 4 page paper, you will conduct a thorough exploration of one career option that you’ve been considering. Your purpose in this project is to utilize available resources to create a complete picture of one area within the world of work. Presentation is graded more specifically; refer to full assignment explanation for guidelines. Also, follow the rubric to ensure you’ve addressed each topic fully and gain the full 150 points.

Career Exploration Presentation – Due November 30 th & December 2 nd The Career Exploration Presentation will be 5-10 minutes in length and will present your summary of findings throughout the semester. It includes information gathered from informational interviews, meetings with advisors, and other lessons learned throughout the semester which impacted your decisions. Be sure to follow the rubric and discuss all points in your presentation so to gain the full 50 points.

Career Planning Portfolio – Due December 7 th Compilation of all assignments & in-class work. Submitted in a two pocket folder with fasteners, a title page (your name, EDUC x210, Career Planning, Spring 2011), syllabus, and all in-class work, homework assignments, papers, & presentations in chronological order. Worth 50 points.
