About Us

Karen Sheldon Catering Pty Ltd commenced trading in 2006.

It evolved from a business restructure of a hospitality and restaurant enterprise created by Karen Sheldon that had operated for thirty years, receiving many restaurant accolades in more remote parts of the Northern Territory.

Three long term employees bought into the business. Each of the directors work in the business and brings complementary skills and the synergy of relationships honed by mutual respect, the pursuit of excellence and sheer hard work.

KSC is the current NT Gold Plate Award holder for Catering and is HACCP accredited.

In 2009 the company branched out into professional training and became a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and an Indigenous Employment Provider (IEP).

Karen Sheldon Training is committed to working towards Closing the Gap on Indigenous economic disadvantage by inspiring, training and mentoring Indigenous jobseekers to take their true place in the Australian economy.

Specialising in working with some of Australia’s most underprivileged people, the company thrives on finding innovative ways to support people through their transition from a life of disparity to a life of purpose and abundance. Focusing on life skills and personal development, our Future Stars Program assists the people in most need of support, training and guidance to move from welfare dependence to sustainable employment.

Karen Sheldon Training has recently been awarded a contract to operate the pilot Northern Territory VTEC – Vocational Training and Employment Centre to continue the good work of the Future Stars Program.

VTECs (Vocational Training and Employment Centres) connect Indigenous job seekers with guaranteed jobs and bring together the support services necessary to prepare job seekers for long term employment. The guarantee of a job before job-specific training starts is the key feature of VTECs. It ensures:

• vocational or job-specific training is directly related to available jobs

• employers can recruit Indigenous job seekers with the right skills for specific jobs

• job seekers are responsible for opting into available jobs

• the commitment of job seekers is rewarded with guaranteed employment

VTECs work with service providers to bring together a comprehensive range of support for job seekers to build vocational and non-vocational capabilities. This includes:

• obtaining a driver’s license

• literacy and numeracy training

• work experience

• pre-employment and job training.

The Northern Territory VTEC is provided by Karen Sheldon Training through it’s Future Stars Program.

Future Stars is a training, job placement and intensive mentoring program specifically designed to assist highly disadvantaged Indigenous jobseekers to transition from welfare dependence to sustainable employment.

Training courses run every eight weeks and begin with four weeks of life skills and work ready training after which participants are streamed into their chosen industry and given job specific accredited and non-accredited training as required by our committed employers.

Once placed into a job, an intensive mentoring program with both participants and employers commences to ensure all available support is given for employment retention.

The Future Stars Program model is unique as it takes a holistic approach to the multiple barriers to employment faced by our participants by integrating social service and employability skills training into the work preparation and employment phases.

TIO Stadium, Marrara

TIO Stadium is Darwin’s home of Aussie Rules Football in the Territory and plays host to many sporting events and music concerts. Subleasing Kantilla’s Function Centre and kitchen from AFLNT, we are the exclusive corporate caterers at TIO Stadium. We have been operating here since 1988.

Ensuring we address the cultural needs of the sports people, VIP and corporate guests we cater to at the Stadium is essential.

Our Dhal, Rogan Josh, Thai Chicken Curry, Roti and Naan bread, Yorkshire Puddings and Kakadu Plum Jam have all been put to the test at TIO Stadium by athletes and guests from their respective countries of origin!

Our Indigenous “Future Stars” excel whilst working functions at the Stadium, as they get to serve their famous sports idols, such as Michael Long, Andy McLeod and Adam Goodes.

Our Catering department gives us the perfect opportunity to give our Future Stars some hands on experience right from the get go. As well as learning about good hygiene, food handling and teamwork, our food components of our course are extremely engaging with our participants. We also have several incubator kitchens in our Catering department that offer participants real life, on-the-job experience.
