LETTER TO EXCHANGEES Dear ICYE exchangees, We are looking forward to meeting you soon and we are glad that you have decided to spend your exchange time in Mexico! In this booklet you will find a brief description of the social projects available for the exchange year 18/19 in Mexico. We recommend that you read them thoroughly and then carefully fill in the Priority List with all the possible information you can provide us. You will find this at the end of the booklet. Furthermore, it is important that all exchangees coming to Mexico are aware of the following points:

You can choose three different options for projects in which you would like to work. Please look at the National Profile too so you are aware of the features of every region. We will try to comply with your preferences but this will depend on the availability of projects and families in each region. If we cannot place you in your preferred project, we will try to offer you a similar one.

Due to the visa procedure, exchangees are expected to stay at the same project for at least six months.

SIIJUVE gives the exchangees the opportunity to change placements after the first six months so that they can have a different experience during the second part of their exchange period. This is only possible if there is a family and a project available in another region.

The projects described below are only some of the possible placements in Mexico and the ones with which SIIJUVE has been working successfully over the last few years. However, we would like you to know that we are continually forging links with new projects in various states of Mexico. Therefore, you might be placed in one of these projects providing that they match your project preferences and interests as shown in the priority list you send us. We ask you to be flexible if we cannot place you in your requested project. However, we will always be able to offer you a very similar option in another city.

Although all exchangees have stayed with Mexican host families in the past, the situation has changed and more exchangees are living within their project facilities. Please, be prepared for this type of hosting situation.

Please remember to fill in the Priority List and to give it to your sending committee along with

a copy of your passport as soon as possible!

COMMUNITY CONTEXT The place in which we work is a large area where there is an

abundance of street vendors among countless

neighbourhoods. There are also “lost cities”, places in which

many families live in the same space with limited access to

health, educational and other services. Due to

overpopulation, which is why people live together in such

small spaces, promiscuity and overcrowding is common,

which in turn lead to sexual abuse, incest, child prostitution

etc.

In places such as these we can identify people who dedicate

themselves to street vending, sweatshop workers, domestic

workers and even some ex-convicts and prostitutes, who, out

of necessity, leave their children alone for extended periods of

time. This leads to a high level of youth crime, single mothers,

risk of homelessness, school dropouts, negligence, sexual

exploitation, child labour, violence and abuse, meaning a

higher number of cases with different psychological and

pedagogical needs.

VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS We are looking for volunteers that want to share their talents,

willingness and commitment through offering various

workshops to a group of children and young people at risk of

homelessness in the Tacubaya area. These include workshops

on education, mental health, nutrition, arts and recreation,

JARDÍN ETNOBOTÁNICO FRANCISCO PELÁEZ R

LOCATION San Andrés Cholula, Puebla, México.

AIMS OF THE PROJECT Show the community the importance of plants, not only for their intrinsic value but also for their essential role in biodiversity and their usefulness and pleasure they give humans. Encourage our visitors to create living spaces in their homes, jobs and schools. Community awareness on the need for their involvement in the conservation of our natural resources. To be stronger as a centre for the study and conservation of wildlife and to be an alternative recreational space.

THEME OR AREAS OF PROJECT The Ethnobotanical Garden wants to change the relationship between humans and plants and other life forms around us. We want to share the pleasure of being with plants, insects and birds and the desire to integrate this into everyday life with others. For us, visitors and not just people who come to the Garden, but all those who come into contact with the Garden, be that through our internet site or television programmes in which we regularly participate. We treat the Garden as a community project, not in relation to a community outside the Garden, but rather as a community we are building through practice: a community that is learning and experiencing a different relationship with the environment. Our intention is that the Garden is a door to changes; a door which opens to another world, a world in which there is another form of coexistence between humans and other life forms. We are creating this achievable future here and now in the Garden.

PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES The garden project is divided into 5 areas: PLANTS: in this area we collect different types of vegetation from various places and also different degrees of disturbance. INSECTS: To collect insects from areas of different vegetation. BIRDS: Divulge, through an interactive catalogue of birds, observation tours and educational workshops, bird species that live in Cholula, marking where we can find them and how we can support conservation. EDUCATION: This area focuses on various activities: Guided Tour, takes about an hour, a tour where the visitors will discover the uses of plants through smell, taste, touch, hearing and appreciation of the collection, in order to regain knowledge and traditions. Workshops: are perfect complements of the tour, we provide a range of workshops related to the world of

plants, birds, insects and the environment. Summer School: Each year a theme is focused on that creates various activities for children, looking to promote a culture of conservation. We do other activities such as: conferences and talks, participation in exhibition fairs and conferences, The Garden Goes to School, Social Service and Volunteering. COMMUNICATION: we organise community events, get in contact with the media and update information on social networks.

COMMUNITY CONTEXT The city of Cholula is located just west of the state capital of Puebla and is part of its metropolitan area. The city is divided into two municipalities called San Pedro Cholula and San Andrés Cholula, which also include a number of smaller communities that surround the main city. There are about 118,170 inhabitants.

PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES SPECIAL CARE PROGRAM CHILDREN: Specialized services we offer include intensive interventions designed to address the particular needs of each child. Autism specialists combine behavioral and humanistic methods such as TEACCH, and lPECS, ABA and use of educational agendas, among others. The result is advanced programs that address all aspects of child development, including language, interrelationships with other children and behavior. These programs provide support as the axis of teamwork with the families of these children. Their active participation is encouraged so they stop being observers to become program participants. Remote Mode: Valora has distance learning programs for students who cannot attend to Puebla. It is about a monthly training and monitoring to parents or teachers who implement the program with children. This type of work has enabled Valora to access other towns obtaining very good results. SCHOOL INTEGRATION: Through this program, students who have a higher degree of progress, are partially integrated (at first) to schools. PRE-EMPLOYMENT WORKSHOPS BEGINNERS: With the aim of promoting the development of projects that contribute to the training and employment have been set up educational workshops, stimulation, rehabilitation and production of goods or services (non-profit), in which participation is conducive community organizations and social groups. This program has managed to start training children in manual skills (embroidery and weaving) and kitchen (chopped and food production). It aims to ensure equal opportunities, ensure full enjoyment of human rights to which creditors are also people with autism, promote educational integration processes, labor and production and mainly teach and strengthen joint work and creativity. AWARENESS AND TRAINING: Valora wants to work on the educational modality, either in person or remotely, loans VALORA training services to schools, shadows, assistants or parents. This guarantees the social participation of communities or institutions and at the same time we disclose and raise awareness in autism. Children from small babies up to ten years old are accepted unless there are brothers and sisters involved, in which case the children accepted could be older. In Tuxtla Gutierrez the main activities include physical and psychological rehabilitation through different kinds of therapy. The aim of the activities is to improve the children’s quality of life and to stimulate their personal skills in order to improve their self-confidence. Beyond this, there are also other types of facilities and aid programmes whose main intention is to improve living conditions for families in the neighbourhood on a long-term basis.
